    You really nailed it about the the issue around Quincy. I was excited to discover the Quincy location because of the story told by Garvey and the survivors in Concord ( I felt their pain😢). I spent hours scouting and preparing my attack on the Gunners at Quincy because I wanted to make a huge victory for Garvey and the minutemen. But, after the battle there was nothing, no payoff whatsoever, and not even a single word from Jun and Marcy. And its not even a settlement location, gunners are just respawned in. Disappointing to say the least.

      I usually put on my best suit of Power Armor on Sole Survivor and wipe out the Quincy "Gunners" Solo. Remember, the Gunners took Quincy with the help of a top level Minute Man, Clint. And the Raiders at Libertalia aren't really raiders, they're Minute Men led by Wire, who deserted at the Quincy Massacre and fled to Libertalia.

      @L C I also stick mainly within the minuteman faction. My home base and nerve center is The Castle. It is my most well defended and most developed settlement. I keep all companions there, except for Deacon, who keeps returning to the Railroad. The shops mechanic and merchants have made me truly the most wealthy person in the commonwealth and from that perspective I enjoy the Minutemen faction very much, I have no shortage of caps $$$
      But yes, I totally agree the NPC's are too 2-dimensional and it doesn't take long to hear all of their dialog and they become like backdrops on the stage.
      I would like a mechanic that forces raiders and gunners to surrender and the ability to convert them into minutemen and build ranks. Maybe in the next generation of AI.

    Also, in regards to the Institute. It's clear they wanted to copy NV and make the Institute like the Legion, in the sense of "we're obviously the bad guys, but we have a reason for being bad".

    Also, have you ever noticed how many places in Fallout 4 seem designed as shooting galleries, rather than places where people live? While fallout 4 is defintley lacking in weapons i don't think fallout new vegas is a good comparison. It has an *insane* amount of weapons compared to every other fallout. I counted up the ranged weapons (for modlist making reasons) in each fallout game & it has 72 non-unique weapons. The next 2 highest are 76 with 62 & 2 with 55.
      Tactics probably has more but with Tactics just dumping seemingly every type of weapon you could think of into the game it's certainly just, something. Like half the weapons in the whole franchise feel like they appeared once in tactics.

    One more point that I would add, "The Settlement System" no matter what you do, you can't seem to avoid being forced into it in some regard. Say you don't go near Concord whatsoever. You get to a farm and they ask you for help, okay, you go do the quest and get a reward and possibly have a food vendor to purchase from, that's fine. Now these people just allow you to build on their land or if you decide not to do that you suddenly have a Spider Sense that a settlement is under attack? Then, unless you rush over there they blame you for not helping. How the hell would the player character know about the attack and what reason do they have to go back?
    Now, let's say you somehow avoid every settlement and just stick to other quests. If you want to get into the Institute you eventually have to use a settlement to build the transporter to get you there from either the BOS who want you to go out and help settlements eventually or the Railroad that need them as safehouses. The game doesn't really give you the option to not be involved with Settlements at all and progress through the story.

    • @anon9469
      @anon9469 Год назад +11

      This would be less of a problem *if* the settlement system was actually fun. Instead, it's clunky when you're trying to build anything, forces you to babysit your settlers, and produces basically nothing of value.

      The Settlement System was fine if it not force on you or required just 2-3 of them, it was fun in small amount.
      However, the Minutemen faction basically forced you to do 10+ of them.
      I love building settlement but in the late game its became a chore "Really? another settlement? I still didn't finish the last 2 yet!"
      Not to mention more settlement mean more chance for it to be under attack.

    I feel like the story between Beantown Brewery and The Stockpile was also a hit and miss. In the story, in case people don't know, the raider gang from Beantown Brewery raided a rival raider gang, stealing some of their food and kidnapping some of the members as leverage, one of them being the gang leader's sister, Lilly. They tried to use her to receive food and whatever they needed but it eventually falls through when the sister tried to escape but was ultimately killed. To save themselves they began to send fake letters, pretending to be Lilly.
    I feel like there should've been a quest where Red would see you're not a raider from the Brewery and would ask you to help her sister and you could either tell Red the truth about what happened, tell her Lilly escaped, or side with the brewery and tell them that's Reds onto them. Maybe they could even have an all out war. They could've done a lot with this. And since Nuka World is close by to the stockpile and if you're the overboss, you can have special dialogue with the raider groups. They could've done a lot with this.

    • @fearlessfosdick160
      @fearlessfosdick160 Год назад +3

      The game has always done that. The area you are talking about is the downtown Boston crash area. It is so full of enemies, each doing his own thing, as well as general clutter, that the CPU can't handle it. At least that is what I think is going on. There is a second area in a rough oval around Greentech Genetics that is affected by a well known bug that causes the game to crash every time one enters the area, which makes the game impossible to finish. FO4 was not only a poor fallout game generally, it was also very poorly optimized (just as the launch version of FNV was,) and leaves one with the impression that it was never finished. Bethesda is never going to bother to fix any of these problems, nor are they ever going to fix the horrible state that the building mechanic is in. This is just something that one has to take into account when one considers buying one of their games. They seem to be a company that is comfortable releasing poorly designed and badly optimized games. One just never knows what he is getting with Bethesda. I don't know what system you are on, but there are a few mods that do things like reduce the number of enemies in a few affected areas and which suppress other things that reduce performance that you might try. They can make the game pretty ugly in some areas because they change or eliminate some textures as well.

I would have liked to have known what Shaun thought the institute was doing. Honestly, there isn't a single faction that is adequately fleshed out. The Minutemen operate like volunteer firefighters; the Gunners and the Forged are just there to provide something to shoot at; the raiders are the drugged up sadists they always were; the DC chapter of BoS have reverted to fascism under a delusional leader; the Railroad is a ham handed nod to a historical event, but they are really just hokey and delusional idealists; and the Institute is a bunch of 50's sci fi movie style mad scientists who seem to be responsible for everything bad that ever happened in the Commonwealth. "...I have to begin by saying that I think the most vapid criticism to Bethesda games is the vague notion that they are being dumbed down to appeal to the lowest common denominator. The fact of the matter is that these games are products that are designed to sell as many copies as possible, that being the goal, does it not make sense to appeal to what the majority of players want?"
    So Bethesda isn't dumbing it down, but instead they are dumbing it down. Got it.
    It's not a "vague notion" that Bethesda is dumbing down their games, Emil Pagliarulo himself said this on twitter.
    And no, developers shouldn't necessarily appeal to the majority of players, people need to understand that it is ok to have games for niche audiences, Fallout was that kind of game, it was an RPG focused on player choice, it had it's own soul, by dumbing it down, simplifying mechanics and design, they may reach a wider audience, but in detriment of the IP's identity.
    Just like how people asking for Souls games to have an easy mode, that would kill a part of it's soul because the difficulty is part of the identity.
    And Bethesda actually made it worse, by turning Fallout into an mindless FPS they created a dissonance in the community, a fandom of a role-playing game now is filled with fans of survival shooters, The games share the same name yet are completely different.
    Also your mod argument doesn't make any sense, so if popular mods dictate what the game should be, by that logic, half life should be like Counter-Strike, Warcraft should be like DotA and the next Arma game should be like DayZ?
    I'm pretty certain that the popularity of these mods just complement your argument about how the vanilla combat is not that good, yet, being somewhat better than the ones in older games, it is understandable why weapon mods would be so prevalent.
    Oh and how the fuck these mods being popular mean that Fallout cannot be Fallout anymore? Removing the RPG mechanics would be worst idea ever, if you want a survival shooter, go play a different game, this is not what fallout is about, why do they need to transform an RPG franchise into an FPS if they can just create a new IP?

    • @anon9469
      @anon9469 Год назад

      The thing with Dark Souls is that its identity is more than just "it's hard". It's also the gothic style, the intricate levels, the lore built with hints and snippets. An easy mode would bring those features to the forefront, at the cost of a different part of the game's identity.
      Same goes for Fallout. In theory, a Fallout-themed non-RPG game would have the same effects - focusing on the 1950s retro aesthetics, the post-apocalyptica, etc. rather than the RPG elements.

    • @Rex-qd1od
      @Rex-qd1od Год назад +1

      @@anon9469 I never said DS's identity was just it being hard, but it's gameplay is a huge aspect for it's success, it's integral, down to the timing of attacks/rolls, to builds and even the player messages, players mostly go though the same challenges and hardships due to not having a difficulty slider.
      In fact, I have a correction to make about my previous statement, after talking to some DS players, I've came to the conclusion that DS isn't a hard game, it's just too punitive if you play it wrong. If you mindlessly make your plays on a game of chess, don't complain about it being "too hard" when your opponent has taken most of your pieces.

    • @joh_kun5530
      @joh_kun5530 6 месяцев назад +1

      In that regard, someone would just have to make a game or new IP that fulfills that niche and that's no easy task - esp for the sort of truly free open world type of games that Bethesda specifically is known to be good at (although they did try to throw it away with them forcing their shitty narratives onto the player character as of recent). Most hardcore survival FPS fixate on modern shooter tropes, is not as extensive in terms of character creation (if it has that at all, which is incredibly rare) and doesn't have that player-driven RPG feel of the character being able to make genuine changes to the world as an individual and I don't think any game is yet to pull it off aside from an install of fallout that has 150+ mods. Maybe stalker or metro can do it?? especially with how Metro Exodus effectively just handed over the whole engine towards the modding community? idk. Most others would probably just turn the "player driven exploration hardcore looter-shooter" idea into some MMO so that they can make a bit more bread so the chances get even lower.
      Also, I have that joke of there being less actual stalker fans than there are people who try to mod Fallout into stalker - and frankly the original pure RPG fanbase of fallout is incredibly niche and I personally wouldn't have even heard of fallout if it stayed an isometric turn + roll based RPG.
      My main issue has always been Bethesda trying to insist on the "retrofuturistic post apocalypse" trope rather than the "post-post apocalypse" trope, but unfortunately the franchise just sort of blew up in the FPS genre (albeit Bethesda is garbage at making such a game)

Whitechapel Charlie, a character with a simulated personality in-game and a joke personality out of it, is somehow more engaging, enjoyable, and memorable than... pretty much any human merchant.
    3. Whose brilliant idea was it to make settlement building a key mechanic of the game, and then repeatedly handicap it with "...but your settlers will only gather items for a few days before stopping", "...but the system for placing objects is clunky and frustrating", "...but you need charisma and specialized training to build a stove" etc.

    I bought Fallout 4 in 2016, and so far I have played it for around 2200 hours. This is one of my favorite games. However, I agree with your points, especially the fourth one where you discussed unrealized potential.
    Following are some of the problems with Fallout 4, in my opinion:
    1) Settlement system:- Although this a great gameplay mechanic, it has been implemented poorly. First, it forces a player to defend a settlement randomly within a limited period of time, which is tolerable in non-survival difficulties. But if you are playing in survival mode, you have to drop whatever quest you are following are rush to the settlement. Furthermore, you have to reach this settlement despite the fact your missile turret system can take down all the enemies without you having to shoot a single bullet. Second, there are radiant quests that settlers or Preston give you, which usually involve clearing a location of enemies that can 'threaten' the settlement or rescuing a kidnapped settler. Why bother installing a dozen of missile turrets to protect the settlement?
    2) Main quest line:- I think the main quest line is great until you meet the institute. It creates a mystery about the institute and builds suspense regarding the organization. Then, everything falls apart about the institute, mostly due to reasons you discuss in the video where the institute lacks a coherent motivation. Most technologically advanced organization issues laser pistols that shoot white lasers instead of red.
    3) Assualt rifle:- The weapon with the best stats but worst visuals

    Also, my favorite thing with the radiant quest is how many quests are either "radiant quests with a fixed location" or "main quests that feel like a radiant quest".
    For the first one, most settlements seem to have a quest they always send you on (Tenpines sends you to Corvega unless you disrupt them, Oberland to Dunwich Borers, Warwick to Wilson Automatoys, County Crossing to the National Guard Training Yard, the Slog to Breakheart Banks, and that place in the far south sends you to Suffolk County Charter School), but they're never fleshed out at all. It's "go here, kill this". The worst part is how Into the Fire (the Finch Farm quest) shows how a few added lines of dialogue and a single added scene (confronting Slag) turns a generic shooting gallery into a genuine questline.
    Meanwhile, both the "find Kellogg" and "find the Courser" quests have a set-up that'd allow them to take place anywhere, using in-world clues to track your target down, allowing a wide variety of confrontations... but they're always at the same location, so you just fast-travel there and ignore the search entirely.

    Amen to basically all of this. Fallout 4 is only a decent game when you mod the ever-lovin' out of it. Otherwise it's incredibly boring and only worth playing through once to quickly wrap up the main story. It's indeed half-baked.
    The only mods I used on New Vegas were a weather mod, unlimited companion mod, and a couple of other minor tweaks.
    4? My mod list is dozens deep, including huge overhaul mods.
    My favorite faction, The Minutemen, & my favorite character, Preston Garvey, really got the short end of the stick. They ain't just half-baked like the overall game, they were never taken out the freezer. No wonder poor Preston gets so much hate; he's a flat "good guy" that serves as a radiant quest dispenser & the Minutemen are flat as Kansas. They don't even get heavies or special forces like the others!
    So in comes We Are the Minutemen, to actually flesh out the faction and make it fun to be The General.
    In comes Sim Settlements 2, All Settlements Extended, et al to fix the busted settlement system - making it actually fun, like SimCity post-apocalypse. Which is what it should have been from the get-go.
    In comes Project Valkyrie *to literally fix the main questline & ending*, because even *that* makes no sense (why can't you simply capture the Institute rather than pointlessly & wastefully blowing up the only truly clean place in the wasteland full of valuable science?).
    I could go on and on. There's so much I have not brought up that it ain't even funny, but this is just a RUclips comment, not my own video or a blog. But the fact is, Bethesda relied on the fans to literally *finish their game*. Which is absolutely puhhhhh-thetic. 💁🏿‍♂️

First, I've played it to Concorde without mods on Ultra with the "ultra" HD textures (but it's just a memory leak), but the game looks like shit as it looked like shit at release day. Todd: "We didn't care so much about the graphics, we cared about other things." Which things? There is literally nothing more than barely acceptable in this game, riddled with bugs, holes, and bad decisions. No function in this game works like expected: Because of bugs, because of bad decisions, because of not understanding at all how it should work, because the function was not completed, and/or because of performance issues.
    The workshop system is an example of it: Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of building a wall around a nice place and to start a new settlement in the apocalypse, it's very immersive. But I lost the count of how many mods, FOSE plugins, interface files, and INI tweaks I needed to complete the function. I've reworked the workshop system myself, based on the scripts from the community patch. Most people have no idea how they screwed it up, their scripts are a joke, or even malware when it comes to performance. If they're laughing about you when trying to get a job as a web developer, try it at Bethesda, they have no standards. And I'm glad that they don't let you near a nuclear plant anyway, because we would have Fallout now.
    No holstered weapons. No holstering possible from the fav menu. No drinking animations on most water sources. No... Goddammit, Fallout 3 had drinking animation for toilets. And you probably could holster weapons in Oblivion. Bite me, Bethesda. Bite me, Todd.

    Ok heres my 2 cents,
    The big idea behind the fallout games is that you get a choice. You get to dictate the fate of the game world that you find yourself in. Fallout 4 only gives the illusion of this. Essential characters, no rep. system, no traits or skills, and a fairly linear story (maybe too much so), all take away from games past, for the only reason I see being to speed up production time. Hell, the only reason I find myself coming back to the game is to muck around with the settlement building system or the gunplay / gun workshopping (They did both of theses pretty well). The game had a good base but was missing its soul, which could have easily been fixed by adding an underlying theme and actually having a choice in-game. Every location in Fallout has an ‘underlying theme’ e.g. Cowboys in FNV or FO2 being militaristic. As old mate said in the video, the triggermen could have been expanded on more, giving the game its theme, the mobster fallout game. Also I reckon adding a ‘realism’ game mode would be awesome (realism being harder than survival), where there is lowered carry weights, food and water consumption, temperature management, sleep requirements, etc,

    I run Fallout 4 on an SSD and it's slow. I load up Skyrim's special edition (which uses Fallout 4's updated 64 bit engine) and the loading times are way better. So I think it's more of a problem with optimization that not even an SSD can fix. No this is a problem with THEM.

    5:10 100 percent. I originally thought that having a laptop with a 3050 and an i7-11800h or a desktop with a 3060 12gb and an i9-10850k would mean I could play the game with zero issues. I played the game through middle and high school; first on an original xbox one and ending with the series s. I had thought the issues werent as prevalent on pc. boy, was I terribly wrong. I was still in the super-cope phase of being a bethesda gamer and didnt actually understand the scope of the problems until I saw your videos and actually experienced the issues myself.

    The setting of fallout really just doesn't lend itself well into RPG mechanics - even if it is a sci-fantasy. It's one of the more grounded and rather limited sci fantasy settings, but it just so happens to start off as mostly an RPG game, to eventually get picked up by a company that specializes in 1st person open world RPGs.
    Unfortunately however, with the skillset Bethesda has access to and the engine that they use - it's probably way too tough of an ask for them to actually bother leaning into the hardcore shooter aspect of their fallout installments (Unless they can somehow just reel their entire id software team to help make fallout 5). That or they fear that they might end up having to compete with actual hardcore survival games like stalker (even though there are probably more people out there trying to turn Fallout into stalker than there are people who actually play stalker). And it's not like they'd have a reason to bother considering that their fanbase doesn't ask that from them and can drown out the voices of those who ask for more and aren't content with outdated shooting mechanics.

    Load times DO suck, but never had a problem with framerate. An 8Gb video card makes a huge difference. If you're going to run off an SSD that is also your OS drive, the minimum you should have is 1Tb. Everything these days is bloated in size and will eat up your HD/SSD space in no time, even without the game. Playing this game on a game machine is a mistake IMO, even though they made it to play on several machines.

    for me i think a big issue is sellement building like its honestly extremely bare bones funcational but its such a big part of the game you are borderline froced to do it even though its frusturating to use and limited and infact has little to no impact on the story it just sort of exists as an optional thing which is kind of shoved in your face and not even explained or introduced very well heck its barely introdrouced at all you are just sort of given a small tutoral and basically told to use trial and error to experiment and figure out what works and what does not.(and froced to work with a ton of limiations which can make building a base frusturatrating)

    I think the synths should have something more to make them interesting. For example that the institute wanted to pass human conscience to a synth body. The people they are replacing is not only to have more control over the wasteland, but also they need test subjects to pass their conscience to a robot body. This would be an awesome final goal for the institute. They believe the human body has to many limitations and is too weak that's why they want all of humanity to transfer their minds to the synths. (wrote this whole comment before he said the same thing jaja)

    not really a solution, but DXVK seems to fix most of the framerate and FLEX.
    Also I can't tell if most of the complaints are hyperbole, or if the railroad, Nick's character story, the running gag of vault-tec-esk experiments for the sake of experimenting, the fact thermodynamics has little to nothing to do with aging, and the concept of "bring a knife to a gun fight", are all completely lost on ya, because the story, even from only in-game content, is pretty solid when you actually take time to listen to the characters talk, it's kinda trash, but it's solid trash.

      @KudoRedfox 100% agree. You can make mele builds in NV that are arguably, boringly OP. Like you don't even get excited for a hard fight anymore because there are no hard fights anymore. I've seen people one hit Legate Lanius, and at that point... the game gets kinda boring. I guess what I'm saying is I think fallout 4 is a little more balanced as a game. Even though you can make OP mele builds, you can't make a mele build that's so OP that every enemy becomes a rinse and repeat, just gotta get it done, boring kinda thing.

  • @nicholaswallen8147
    @nicholaswallen8147 Год назад

    To be honest the Institute was an absolute potentially game changing villain just turned to a oh scary robot people that have no goal lol. Like u said brother.
    I would have done something akin to: 1. The institute kidnaps raiders, cannibals and other humans no one will ever miss (outside their own factions [which there would be a raider faction]), and synths would take their place, becoming "raiders".
    2. The kidnapped "victims" turned into super mutants. Because who hates the super mutants the most? The Brotherhood of Steel. Giving the super mutants an enemy to focus on (go to war with) would make the B.O.S focus heavily on them, and not any other faction. Giving the institute time to prepare for their end goal.
    3. The institute's end goal. Is has to make sense, it NEEDS to make sense. So...genocide of the inferior human race (or survivors). Hear me out. The institute has had time to study all sorts of sciences, hell they created implants to help humans achieve super human status. They have created A.I. synths that can look absolutely human. They are a "superior" race of humans and what better way to help mankind come into a new scientific age? Wipe out the useless, inferior ones. But they need time. To build an army. Or a mega-virus? Or even a super weapon. But time is their weakness. So they stage a 2 front distraction, use synths to become raiders and scout other raiders and settlements. And kidnap more raiders

    • @nicholaswallen8147
      @nicholaswallen8147 Год назад

      To make this even more actual world effecting... The player would run into up to 3 maybe 4 of these synth raiders, and discover they're not humans. After discovering who to talk to and picking up a trail, the institute sends some super mutants followed by pure gen 1 and 2 synths to "quiet" the player. It is then people should piece why would super mutants not attack the synths? Why ambush a single person with So many enemies. Then over time, the institute has to pick up pace and a timer starts. I'd say 2 weeks in game should be plenty to actually figure out where they are holed up, kick ass and blow up the place.
      If the timer hits zero, and the player has not finished off the institute, game over. They win. The player dies, the people across the wasteland die. Honestly it should be set to game over, erases saves so people have to start over. Seems mean and kind of a dick thing to do, but it is an incentive. The player actually saves the wasteland. Actions that have both consequences and/or rewards. This sadly could still work with the whole father looking for son B.S. but not really important lol

    I was super engrossed into FO4 until one point. This happens to every dang game I play sadly and its called simulation sickness. FO4 for me was kool until I was walking past a fridge in middle of an open lot and heard a kids voice. I opened up the fridge and out pops a mutated boy who was stuck in there for 200 years. I quit and uninstalled the game right there as I am one of the few who suffer severely from sim sickness. I can tolerate some FO4 frost as that does away with the awful writing of BGS.

    I agree theres issues with every game not just Bethesda games. But If you're a stickler for graphics, Bethesda studios isn't for you. Idk if you haven't noticed but there wasn't a real difference from fallout 3 to new Vegas as far as load times and graphics go. I'd much rather deal with long loading times than short loading times and bad/ boring gameplay like most single player RPGs. Take borderlands franchise for example. 1 step forward and multiple steps backwards..
    Ps good video tho!

    I somewhat agree that the combat can be a little bit clunky but the fix for that isn’t turning it into every other game out in the market right now. Fallout does not need to be the type of shooter you’re describing and I hope it never is.
    Also claiming that synths are “magical bs” is a really bad argument, Synths just like many other technological advancements in the game are far fetched and seem impossible to us in the real world. Fallout 4 is almost 300 years ahead of us in a nuclear society. Synths are not a crazy invention to imagine especially 300 years ahead of us. The whole game is magical bs that’s kind of the point in a fictional game. Shooting up a stimpak and healing your limbs and overall health is magical bs as well but it’s not an issue because that is fallout.
