- I play a Magic the Gathering Online Legacy league with Simic Turbo Stasis, a deck from Patreon subscriber Swan! This deck uses Root Maze to tap everything, Stasis to keep everything tapped, Forsaken City to pay for Stasis, and Urza's Saga to find Black Vise for the win! That's right... the goal is to not play any Magic at all! Hurry up and freeze! Control-combo MTG

In round three, at 31:30 your opponent plays pithing needle naming urza's saga. Then, you search with urza's saga, and realize you no longer have any targets to fetch at 32:14. Then you play a useless urza's saga at 33:00, instead of pitching it to the forsaken city. This makes you "a card short" at 34:30. It's not a brainstorm mistake, its the saga play.
CSI: MTGO right here
Look at the DETECTIVE over here. Good note.
watching you smear delver after they double wastelanded you was so damn cathartic, I was literally cheering irl
That was the best moment of my life.
So dirty
20:39 "Needle on Brainstorm, got 'em."
I like how Brian can laugh at himself when he says something absurd.
Someone has to laugh at me
I don't play Magic anymore, but I really like your content. It feels peer-to-peer and relaxing. Keep it up!
The "I don't play Magic but like listening to you" crowd is a big part of my audience. Love to fill that niche! :)
@@BoshNRoll Same boat here. I played a lot of Legacy back when I could afford it; I don't play Magic anymore, but your videos help me get the fix. I'm always flirting with the idea of playing again, but not ready to put a ring on it just yet.
"If lands enter the battlefield tapped, and they never untap, it is very hard to cast spells." Sage advice from Mr. Bosh 😆
i think commune with spirits could be interesting tech. i think its better than preordain cuz it digs deeper and finds saga, city, maze, and stasis.
Think if you opted for those, you'd run too low on blue cards and have to find replacements for FoW in sideboard
While not blue, it does get around Narset and is Green for FoV
Cool idea 👍
@@Kryptnyt I could honestly see a world where the deck pivots into Daze over FoW, but idk if that's actually correct
There are few things in MTG that feel quite as good as paying for a Daze with a Spirit Guide.
I have seen many crazy shit happen on this channel. But the first match in the first game was absolutely hilarious, I loved it
1:17:04 that laughter that says "I'm fucked but I'm having fun"
Brian bringing the good stuff as always 👏 this iteration of the deck feels great
I have Stax as the archetype i enjoy playing the most and I must say i'm touching myself seeing this deck. I'd love to build this and play on the table to see my oponents face.
Stasis, my oldest and truest love
Been very entertaining watching this deck develop. Always nice to see some spice that's not full meme. Very interesting deck. And hard locks just fill that salt-generating itch in a way nothing else quite does.
This deck is right up my alley, such a good video
Would love some more stasis!
Great vid 👌
"Octopi is the oldest plural form of octopus, coming from the belief that Latin origins should have Latin endings. However, octopus is not a simple Latin word, but a Latinized form of the Greek word októpus. Consequently, its “correct” plural form would logically be octopodes."
Round two, you kinda got tunnel vision from 24:20- 26:30. You could have end of turn brainstormed on two different turns. While you would have died to double bolt, you were trying to find a four outer out of 42, and spending blue on their turn meant you would have an extra blue for either fluster or that final brainstorm that was in your hand when you conceded. You also could have grabbed another island instead of a second saga- yes, if they wasteland you there's not a quick route to black vise, but it does let you have enough blue to cantrip one more time. Once they are in the lock, you can get vise eventually.
Love your videos, you play a ton of sweet decks and your reactions to both good and bad things speaks to me on a spiritual level.
Thanks!
I’ve been playing stasis in paper magic since the 90s. This, meaning root maze with spirit guide, is the best build, and it was the probably the only deck to get better when they unbanned black vise. Unfortunately, force of vigor being a popular side board card is an unsolvable problem.
I like to think I put Abolish in side boards for legacy tournaments in the Tri-City area in the early 2000’s.
Would a 1-of As Foretold potentially take over a game?
Also, I see Kiora, Master of the Depths not cast much due to always being behind on tempo, but wouldn’t any planeswalker at all be very powerful when Stasis hits? Kiora Behemoth Beckoner can untap a land up to 7 times would that be enough? Jace Beleren is like Howling Mine that can also mill them out. Garruk Wildspeaker can untap lands and also attack them to death since he untaps more than one Island at a time.
Tamiyo, Compleated Sage can be a Stasis or Root Maze from your graveyard.
And another thought is if you can cast a 4 mana spell why not cast Cryptic Command which can tap their team and/or bounce a problem permanent, and if you slam Stasis right after those permanents don’t matter anymore.
That last game was super cool, LOVED the Saga Kiora Saga play
So beautiful, locking with Root Maze and Stasis
Favorite genre of deck
YES TURBO STASIS IS BACK. Haven't played Turbo Stasis in 20 years.
Staaaaasiiiiiiiiiis!!!
Loved that first game
Wow, I played a very similar dark depths vampire hexmage paper deck like uh 7-10 years ago. It's nice to see it back with more options. I played sink hole and juzam djinn, urza's sage and thespian stage makes things so much more interesting. I need to revive my version.
Love these Stasis decks! I’ve been kicking around the idea of Including Stern Dismissal somewhere in the deck. It kills construct and Marit Lage tokens, tempos Murktide and other expensive creatures, and it can insulate Root Maze and Stasis from removal. My favorite part is that if needed you could run out a Stasis without the full lock just to slow the game down and make land drops and then end step bounce it, untap all your permanents, play your lock pieces, and then replay the Stasis.
Stern Dismissal reads "...an opponent controls".
@@ianferrel oh, darn… I probably should have looked it up first. For some reason I thought it was strictly better than Unsummon.
@@l337ath3ist Remembering to read the card gets the best of us all at some point ;)
Living in Hong Kong, was about to sleep but this video popped out. Good thing no work tomorrow
I feel like this really needs at least 1 Lotus Petal. I love the direction you took this deck.
That mono black depths looks so fun. Not sure if it's good but I really like it
If they weld your construct at any point into a pithing needle at 58:00 you just name welder with it it and then you still have a construct and they don't have a welder.
That game one gave me the feels
Commune with spirits seems kinda good. It sees 4 cards and digs for all 3 combo pieces.
Do you think daze has a home here? Pivot a little more into control with the FoW’s and allow you to really get your hooks in? Once you have stasis out, lands in play aren’t as important. Possibly cut howling mines? I thought the mines were the weakest slot, since they offer opponent advantage too.
I wonder if playing a bunch of alternate cost spells; whether it be Force of Will, Force of Vigor, or whatever in the maindeck would be a good plan with Ancestral Vision to refuel. Stasis can certainly stall long enough that Vision pays off.
Also Brian, how dare you waste more of my life with Stasis. Why am I even watching this?
I guess when you lock you dont need the vision anymore
This is basically a Premodern deck lol. I guess Brian secretly just wants to play more Premodern.
Love all the stasis decks, this one and the last one both
I wonder how this deck would play if u switched the kioras and mines for a full set of forces main. also curious about a more robust crop rotation package (mainly maze of ith, I could see it stalling a game for a long time)
Has there ever been consideration for Garruk Wildspeaker as the enabler/wincon planeswalker? Can't be red blasted, attacks for 1.5 a turn, and leaves tokens behind for a big attack with a stasis bounce.
It’s always a glorious day when the YT algorithm puts BnR and ThrabenU as the first two suggestions to watch.
For some reason, Black Vise always brings me such joy.
Stasis is such a great deck.
I feel like chain of vapor is a sketchy piece of interaction in this deck. Yes it is cool to bounce something while denying your opponent the mana to recast it, but them being able to bounce a lock piece back feels like playing with fire
worst case you can bounce your own stasis in their end step, letting you untap your lands and replay stasis on your own turn
Similarly, even if they sac a land to bounce stasis they just paid to let you untap your lands. You don't want to bounce their stuff if you already have root maze (unless you have green mana in hand) or vise on board. At the point that you have all of these out then chain doesn't matter because you've already won.
match 1 game 3 was mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
_chef's kiss_
Wanna see the video! Could you also try a build with stasis and dack fayden?
I love stasis. Hell yeah!
Octopuses is the preferred English plural, Octopi is the Latin plural and Octopodes is the Greek plural.
Yeah but that opens you up to Octopo-DEEZ NUTS jokes
Void Snare is sorcery spd chain of vapor. If you're interested.
hey brian great vid as always, after watching i couldnt help but think garruk wildspeaker may be better than kiora bc it is not blue but meets the criteria as being an untapper, 4 mana even though double green is a higher cost than U/G, and winning on its own. I know it wouldn't pitch to FoW but that seems like a reasonable tradeoff to make it dodge the rampant blast effects.
1:31:00
I heard on NPR's Cephalipod Week from a marine biologist the most correct plural of octopus is octopodi ("ock-tup-o-dee")
Wow, checkmate. I'd trust NPR
so that we are in the same standing a version forcing back to basics + root maze with 8 fetchs 8 basics candelabra and urza's saga would not work better?
squinting at the thumbnail I thought the green border read "River Boa" and my old green stompy loving heart skipped a beat
River Boa is a banger
Have you tried a version of this deck that runs enlightened tutor? The deck is soft to wasteland anyway you might as well go all in.
I have! There’s a bunch of stasis on the channel already
more of this deck we sickos like it
Great deck! Is veil of summer maybe a consideration?
Been falling asleep to your videos a lot lately. Trying to be a little more appreciative by engaging when I start the videos. Goodnight and thank you!
Sleep tight!
simic blood moon prison lookin fine
if you splash white , use E Tutor to get your enchantment / artifact , quality over quantity and back then I had time for the 4 mana enchantment kismet , also used some spells that returned Islands to keep stasis ( and tap creatures ) until Forsaken City
appeared ... I used Chain of vapor as you did at the end of opponents turn to untap and then replay
i was thinking the same thing. also lets you play 3feri over defense grid
Hi bosh, what are you thoughts on having a one of wasteland in decks with crop rotation that are trying to do something else as a tool vs lands?
I like that in decks like Infect and Elves, not sure it adds much to this deck since all the resources are dedicated to assembling the combo.
What about Meekstone as 5th sorta stasis that can be searched with Urza saga?
is 3 mana kiora worth it? she should provide enough draws to get the full lock together
Octopi, Octopuses, and octopodes are all considered to be correct plural forms of octopus
Island? That's right, ALPHA! Forest...hold on, let me che---ALPHA!
GARFIELD TAKE THE WHEEL
@@BoshNRoll I read this comment at 1am, and my wife were quite confused. It took me 12 full hours to realize you were talking about (Richard) Garfield, not (I'mSorryJon) Garfield.
From the wrapup, it's Teferi Who Slows The Sunset
LFG STASIS!!
Great video! Would be so cool if you could make this competitive. I bet daze would be a first.
Round 4, game 1. On turn 2 couldn't you have played forsaken city and stasis while opponent was tapped out to play around pyroblast, then played the fetch on turn 3 to get green and play root maze then?
Is Void Snare better than Chain Of Vapor in this deck since you can cast it with stasis out?
Being able to Chain your own stasis in their end step for a mana reload is good
Glacial Chasm to deal with creatures?
Have you considered Veil of Summer instead of Defense Grid?
do you think a one of mox opal/lotus petal would be good for moments when saga pops and you want another mana under stasis? maybe metalcraft is too tall of an order but petal doesn’t care if it untaps under stasis anyway
They would still enter tapped and not untap.
Petal needs to tap for mana actually so they wouldn't really work with root maze but something like amulet of vigor could help him get himself out of the lock.
well root maze isn’t always in play. if you’re just on stasis on its own to buy time for a full lock like in the depths game it could be good, and the petal could help you with mana to get there. and if esg works well for the deck a petal wouldn’t be that much of a hinderance in an opener.
and I mean that petal doesn’t care if it untaps under stasis since to use petal you have to tap and sacrifice it anyway
13:16 suuuuch justice
STASIS HYPE
The original idea of this deck was in Premodern, In Premodern you have Gush there, although you don't have enemy fetches, duals, brainstorm or FoW.
You do have all the other free spells from Masques block, though.
@7:50 25 lands, a preposterous number for a legacy deck (that isn't lands)
Went to like this video after round one and realized I'd already liked it.
What a treat.
obligatory algorithmic contribution
This may be random, but what about a singleton Ghost Town to flip back into your hand to pay for Stasis in a pinch? You can also Rotation for it.
Or maybe Trade Routes?
Those don’t work with Root Maze :(
Oboro would be better to flip and pay for Forsaken City.
Is there a reason to play preordain over ponder?
Ponder wants shuffle effects, which are very bad with root maze.
I'm surprised that Stasis can do as well as it did in a post Force of Vigor world.
What it sounds like to get shit on 28:53
is deafening silence a reasonable consideration for something like storm which can just beat you through the stasis lock
root maze is your anti storm because it taps artifacts
@@music00soba LED doesn't care about being tapped.
@@jolssoni2499 but lotus petal, moxen, wishclaw talisman all do. lands entering tapped also have non zero effect as well
To be honest the issue with the 2nd delver player was just not finding Stasis in the top 20 cards of your deck each time. Deck feels like it needs an enchantment tutor of some form. I am not sure about crop rotation honestly as if you get the lock you have legitimately 15 turns in which you could draw an urza's saga.
Feel there is something cool here but needs more tuning.
Enchantment tutor also gets saga lol
@@MehrGills .... sometimes forget it's an enchantment
@@chaselewis5372 yeah. The only text on saga that makes it worse is specifying {0} or {1} rather than artifact with mana value 1 or less. Every other single word on saga makes it better each time you read it tho
This was spicy! Such a Rollercoaster. Sorry you had to stay up so late recording but I appreciate the content 👌
M1G2 you didn't even need their life total, they had fewer cards in deck, not the most engaging content, but that will win you the game eventually, hopefully before your timer runs out.
I'm personally a fan of "Octopodes." It's almost certainly wrong, but since everyone argues over the plural of Octopus anyway, might as well just say whichever floats your goat.
I thought black vise was banned. Guess not haha!
kiora stax decks should be "putting the suction cups on" rather than "the hooks in" hahahaahah
Affixing the suckers
@@BoshNRoll affecting suckers has effects on suckers!
Would Kiora Behemoth Beckoner be better in this deck?
3 mana is more reasonable, and you shouldn't need 7 untaps to win
You may very well need more than 7 untaps to win
@@BoshNRoll I stand corrected
I think you're on to something. 4 mana is a really hard ask.
Octopuses is a correct plural. But it's pronounced "Oaf" (Collector Ouphe).
Try since long to run an izzet legacy stasis, but it has not so good stability. Yours has similar problems, but more potential. Drop the Mines, Chain, and the planeswalker, they are useless for the main goal. Change the crops (at least some) with expedition map, searchable through saga and can be played. And a needle main. Then you cant search stasis and maze, so splash white for enlightened tutor. And i recommend some counter main to stop opponents early game with mediocre hands.
What about… stasis rootmaze bouncelands amulet of vigor? Hmmmm
It's octopodes technically. Greek root word.
Oopdopooders
Is the reason you're running Preordain over Ponder that raw card selection is just THAT important in this deck, and you don't ever want to reset a scry with a Ponder shuffle? That's all I can think of for why to run a cantrip that on average sees fewer cards.
Root Maze makes the cantrips that need a setup shuffle wayyyyyy worse.
Killed me with the Padme Amidala meme 😹
Crumbling vestige is a land that could break parity in the lock and functions well under just a root maze.
Stasis. Mmmmmm..... 😋
Octopusses might be correct but octopie are delicious ❤️
Why play chain of vapor, can someone explain why its a good card? : )
rOwOt maze
why aren't we playing bant? has better mana and access to teferi which does grid/mine but better and force pitchable plus e tutor for the entire combo. also why preordain over ponder?
Octopuses is most correct for English, but its Latinate plural is octopodes.
It's like this entire deck is trying to sell people on playing creatures with Vigilence lol
