i have always admire the gurkhas and fascinated by their history ever since i was a kid... i even told my mom that when i grow up,i want to be a gurkha! she laughed and said u can't bcos you are born malay...hahaha silly me.. from what i had experience...this gurkha are one of the most humble people i've met... they are one of the true special forces behind the scenes of singapore safety and security...salute to the gurkha!
We have to thank the Gurkhas for keeping Singapore safe. They enable us to be able to celebrate National Day and we are able to feel safe, knowing that any terror inside the country is neutralised by them.
Thank you for sharing the stories of our Singapure Mamas. As a son of a retired Singapore Gurkha, born and raised in Singapore, it is sad that we did not get to stay in Singapore. However, I understand and accept what Singapore had to do for the sake of its long-term well being. Really am grateful for the time spent in Singapore and what the government provided our families. I am not certain of what others experienced past their stay in Singapore, but honestly I grew rich of Nepalese culture and my true family past my stay in Singapore. To understand that Singapore was a temporary home was a hard hurdle but it did make me grow in the will to surpass myself in life. Thank you Singapore for providing me the vision. A country so small yet ever endearing. I just hope that when the time comes, Singapore will remember our fathers contributions as we do hers. Keep progressing Singapore!

I loved Singapore, so when my father retired from his services to Singapore Government. I was heartbroken, I knew we were never going to be part of Singapore culture and society. As there was no hope for younger generation, like me and rest of the children who grew up loving the country. It's a sad reminder to most of the newer generation currently living there right now, dreading they too have to leave a great nation forged by Late Mr. Lee Kwun Yew. It will be a tale saying I grew up up in home that never was my home in the first place.
I'm ashamed of the Singapore government for not giving them the citizenship despite serving the nation. We give China and India people the citizenship but not to the loyal and hard working Gurkhas?

As an American, my opinion is that if you server 20 years in the military of a country, you should be granted citizenship. We've always done that...(here, if you server 6 years you are eligible for citizenship). But I understand that other countries have different rules. But if you're willing to serve, you should be given the privilege of citizenship. Just my 2 cents.

It's very sad to say that even Gurkhas police protect & served Singapore long before the independent , but Singapore government never recognized Singapore Gurkha police force technically, all the Gurkhas police including their family must have to leave Singapore soon after they retired from the police force. for Gurkha children's this is totally nightmare... specially who was born n raised in Singapore. This hits them hard ! Singapore government must issue them permanent residence card or allow them to live in Singapore after their retirement ! This is very unfair !
+Navibom Bom yes, yes is sad stories for many Singapore born and raised Gurkha childrens . Now, we even have to import those whom can't blend into our Silly-pore environment. We should have honoured our tough Gurkha old guards in SG50 NDP parade, they are truely part of it.

What this speaker/writer is saying about us Gurkhas is true but we need solid change now because just talking about it won't cut it. Policies and laws should be changed/created in order to give more rights to the Gurkhas and their children. I was born and raised in Singapore and I dont doubt for one second that we need change!

My father served british gurkha force for 22 yrs.i was born in hongkong.british government gave us permenant residency to hongkong as well as british citizens.....but its so sad it dont happens in singapore..though they are born in singapore

As a born and raised in Singapore for 16 years of my life I lived in Singapore and just last year my father has retired and it is so tough to adapt in nepal the pension money is so little from 1950 till now it has not increased and in nepal everything is overpriced so it’s hard to live here with just the pension money and as a born and raised in Singapore I wish I had gotten citizenship.
Maybe just maybe if those who were born and bred in SG could approach the SG government an appeal for SPR to enable them to study and work in SG would be a bonus. SG is now wealthy beyond belief and...kind.
Studied in Singapore as the son of a GCSPF. Finished O levels in late 70s. Miss my old school friends and class mates to this day. Don't know how they are doing.... in 2018. Found it very difficult to settle back .......in Nepal.
After watching this video and read all the comments especially from those who I call SG temporary children, I truly feel sad for them as they found difficulty to adjust to life in Nepal. I hope our leaders could be approached by the Gurkha community here in SG as well as those who had returned to ask for permanent residency on humanitarian grounds. For all we know they would make better residents than some of those who take our residency for granted.
i had a veerry rough 4yrs + in nepal when my father retired.. adapting to life in nepal wasnt easy..i was actually depressed with life for awhile,,,i couldnt read or write nepalese sankrits..when i making my driving lisence ..all the wriiten test was in nepalese sankrist,,,no english lol...the whole room was making fun of me lol..damn so embarassing !! iam in australia now..planin to go singapore next yr and meetup sum of my old good s;porean frens and walk down memory lane those drains where i used to catch guppies and puckling starfruits rambutans lol...damn i miss singapore cant wait for it!

ur so nice siah went til Nepal took pics interacted with ex Gurkhas interviewed them.. ur so nice siah.. but sadly Singapore wont care. Singapore doesnt care. Singapore will never give a damn. for Singapore is like that. im a 91' baby of a Gurkha born n raised in Singapore. I stayed for 19years. Its almost 5years that i have came to Nepal. We miss Spore a lot. Hais. But what to do..
they are the politest of friends and neighbours. And the bravest of a soldier. Streetwise, i managed to call a Gurkha man my buddy when i was 13, and at 15 i fell in love with a Gurkha lady and we dated before she had to went back a year later. My buddy had always my back in studies and during playtime. That friendship opened my eyes to the Gurkhas we had in Singapore because my school was just beside the Mt Vernon Camp. They were really nice people but never never never make them angry or cross them. Gurkha ladies were beautiful and gorgeous like the Mongolians or Uzbeks. Like a cross breed of Chinese and Malay! Some were like Hindustani!

I believe before they start their contract to work in Singapore, it was explained clearly to them that citizenship will not be granted to them or their children. Maybe it is wiser to raise their children back in Nepal than in Singapore so that the children will have less problem adjusting to living in Nepal.
Surely after a few generations serving Sg they know what the terms are even before looking at the papers. I am not familiar with their remuneration or compensation package but I think the call to consider a lifetime of service to the nation beyond just the contractual agreement is not unreasonable. I believe voices in support of granting citizenship to those who completed their service are asking for the issue to be viewed from a moral standpoint. While granting citizenship might not be feasible in Sg situation, my personal opinion is that atleast their kids should be given a chance to finish high school. The least that could be considered especially when they are expected to lay their life down if the situation calls for it in the course of doing their job.

As a Singaporean, I would prefer to have our military and security forces staffed by Singaporeans as far as possible. I will give them the benefit of the doubt that they have exceptional skill, capacity and loyalty. But I cannot fathom still utilizing what amounts to mercenary forces from another country. We have our own elite military and life-saving forces. It doesn’t seem necessary to import manpower for this purpose. If our people cannot match them in skill, capacity and loyalty, let our training standards be raised. If this is not possible, offer them a place in our country as citizens. Even with their proven loyalty so far, it irks me that non-Singaporeans are being employed in such high-stakes roles. It seems like a slap in the face for our born-and-raised military and security professionals.
It seems most comments came from the Gurkhas' own children. What do their parents think, do they want to stay or leave? In UK, I believe Gurkhas are allowed to integrate with the people, unlike Singapore Gurkha. Thus it eventually led to the UK people fighting for their rights to gain citizenships. It takes both hands to claps in order to make a loud enough noise for the govt to take notice of their situation. In Singapore, the Gurkhas seems to be enjoying themselves within the confine of their own people in their restricted compound. Thus, the instrinsic bond with the citizens is missing in this regard, and then return as voices of retired Gurkhas thru the book by Zakarial Zainal. I have no doubt they still missed Singapore.
If the british settled in singapore and used gurkhas as security forces and commandos in pow rescue, hundreds of thousands of troops would be saved and they would have been to counterattack in the pacific war

Theres only one kind of soldiers that can matches their bravery.. no other than the Battle Tested “PHILIPPINE SCOUT RANGERS” which they had fought during the KOREAN WAR, with 40,000 Chinese Communist Soldiers going against 1,400 Filipino Soldiers. Filipinos were outnumbered as BRITISH SPECIAL FORCES fighting hand-in-hand with PHILIPPINE SCOUT RANGERS with limited ammunitions against the Communist Chinese Army but decided to pull back and abandoned their comrade Filipino Soldiers as BRITISH SPECIAL FORCES together with the GURKHA tribe soldiers had RETREATED when they realized that they were facing and heavily outnumbered against 40,000 Chinese Soldiers.. But the few 1,400 FILIPINO SPECIAL FORCES “PHILIPPINE SCOUT RANGERS” decided to remain and hold a fight against the mighty 40,000 Chinese Army in order not to capture the rest of South Korea from Communist Chinese.. As a result on that KOREAN WAR, from 1,400 FILIPINO SCOUT RANGERS had a total casualties of 24 dead soldiers and 26 were heavily injured but on the side of CHINESE COMMUNIST ARMY, there were 7,000 Chinese Soldiers killed and a hundreds have been injured on their side... FILIPINOS were holding their lines and post during that KOREAN WAR while BRITISH SOLDIERS together with GURKHA Tribe Soldiers had quickly abandoned their POST and left their fellow comrade FILIPINO SOLDIERS.. This is one of the reason and the real history why SOUTH KOREA got spared from NORTH KOREA with the Chinese Army during the KOREAN WAR..Salute to the FILIPINO SCOUT RANGERS of 1,400 againts 40,000 Chinese Soldiers were the ratio is 1:40 or 1 Filipino Scout Rangers against 40 Chinese Soldiers.. During that KOREAN WAR, One(1) Filipino Scout Ranger should kill Forty(40) Chinese Soldiers in order to matched 40,000 Chinese Army..
some of them don't feel home, in nepal , partly because they were born and raised in another country, and they feel isolated in their own countries, which kinda sucks. a lot them are very weak in their nepali verbally and writing, and the mindset from Nepal and the countries they were raised in, is very different, therefore, very difficult to cope.

The Gurkhas are respected fierce fighter,very loyal I remenber in the 70;S ther is a gurkhas army contigent house ih the former 5SIR in portsdown road near Dover road the even have Nepal Park name after them, also in the 60s to 70s every National day parade ther is a Gurkhas Police marching contigent with their unique style of marching holding the SLR rifile incarry position. Now sadly they house in Aljunied with no participation in any National event. Only call to action when ther is danger and our Singapore police cannot handle the situation just like the Little Iniad riot, Very little is known in actual there is already a battle ready Gurkhas Police Platoon standing by in Farrer Park but was not call to action as the situation was well handle by our Police Force. As such these brave men should be given greater recognation and intergeration in our multi culture society. Sadly they are not to be . I remenber in the 1960 ther is always a keen participation of Gurkhas in the Pesta Sukan Big walkand every year the Gurkhas always are the top winner. As they wear Singapore Police uniform and always perform Vital guard duties in our installation, they were once deploy as Prison Guards alsothat why there is no known prison breakout in Singapore except the Mas Selamat Case. In actual facts alot of Singapore Vital Installation is guarded by Gurkhas, like the Singapore Mint , Oil installation , Istana even our PM house. and majorevent like the Asian Leadersmeet in Shangirla Hote.These Gurkhas take their duties seriously and very alertMaybe the Goverment shoiuld consider taper down on National Service ans install a few battalion of these brave and proven solidier to protect Singapore just like Brunei. Even Britian which have the Royal Maraines and SAS still maintain a few battlion of Gurkhas for front line duties.

Presently ther are already some PR children serving NS in the army already. Also there are some Taiwanese on contract with the Airport Police and AETOS, about 60% of the AEtos Police are Malaysian. Maybe for Airforce, Guards and Commandos strickly for Sporean Citizen. Very soon SAF will be training with the PLA chinese army. Now we have a Gurkhas Contigent why not a Battlion of PLA army also.I am sure all these forienger wouldlove to serve in the SAF because there is no war, very peaceful an d safe. ha ha I hope the Minister of Defece is not viewing my comments.
You are right, back inmy NS day at 2SIR ther were plenty of Malaysian Malay left over My the Malaysian Armed Forces from RSM CSM RP sergent RQMS, CQMS, COOk SGt , PTI in 1972. But slowly they were phase out.But with the Singapore Citizen Malay their minset have change with our multi cultural society, infact in the Guard Units there is40% malay, commando Unit also start taking in Malay most of the Maly can be found inthe Police Forceand SCDF.Times have change.
I just have to point out that the "Singapore came from third world to first world" is total bull crap... We were the Crown Colony of Singapore and an important port of the East India trading company for over 200 years. By the early 1900's, we had policemen, we had established fire fighters, we had schools, we had a busy sea port, we have a well organized government and much more. The last time we were a third world nation was when we were a fishing village 200+ years ago.

As a born and raised in Singapore for 16 years of my life I lived in Singapore and just last year my father has retired and it is so tough to adapt in nepal the pension money is so little from 1950 till now it has not increased and in nepal everything is overpriced so it’s hard to live here with just the pension money and as a born and raised in Singapore I wish I had gotten citizenship.
Maybe just maybe if those who were born and bred in SG could approach the SG government an appeal for SPR
to enable them to study and work in SG would be a bonus. SG is now wealthy beyond belief and...kind.

Studied in Singapore as the son of a GCSPF. Finished O levels in late 70s. Miss my old school friends and class mates to this day. Don't know how they are doing.... in 2018. Found it very difficult to settle back .......in Nepal.
After watching this video and read all the comments especially from those who I call SG temporary children, I truly feel sad for
them as they found difficulty to adjust to life in Nepal. I hope our leaders could be approached by the Gurkha community here
in SG as well as those who had returned to ask for permanent residency on humanitarian grounds. For all we know they would
make better residents than some of those who take our residency for granted.
i had a veerry rough 4yrs + in nepal when my father retired.. adapting to life in nepal wasnt easy..i was actually depressed with life for awhile,,,i couldnt read or write nepalese sankrits..when i making my driving lisence ..all the wriiten test was in nepalese sankrist,,,no english lol...the whole room was making fun of me lol..damn so embarassing !! iam in australia now..planin to go singapore next yr and meetup sum of my old good s;porean frens and walk down memory lane those drains where i used to catch guppies and puckling starfruits rambutans lol...damn i miss singapore cant wait for it!

Streetwise, i managed to call a Gurkha man my buddy when i was 13, and at 15 i fell in love with a Gurkha lady and we dated before she had to went back a year later.
My buddy had always my back in studies and during playtime. That friendship opened my eyes to the Gurkhas we had in Singapore because my school was just beside the Mt Vernon Camp. They were really nice people but never never never make them angry or cross them.
Gurkha ladies were beautiful and gorgeous like the Mongolians or Uzbeks. Like a cross breed of Chinese and Malay! Some were like Hindustani!

I believe before they start their contract to work in Singapore, it was explained clearly to them that citizenship will not be granted to them or their children. Maybe it is wiser to raise their children back in Nepal than in Singapore so that the children will have less problem adjusting to living in Nepal.
Surely after a few generations serving Sg they know what the terms are even before looking at the papers.
I am not familiar with their remuneration or compensation package but I think the call to consider a lifetime of service to the nation beyond just the contractual agreement is not unreasonable.
I believe voices in support of granting citizenship to those who completed their service are asking for the issue to be viewed from a moral standpoint.
While granting citizenship might not be feasible in Sg situation, my personal opinion is that atleast their kids should be given a chance to finish high school. The least that could be considered especially when they are expected to lay their life down if the situation calls for it in the course of doing their job.

Hopefully Singapore recognizes these great people and give them residence permit even after ther retire like the UK.
As a Singaporean, I would prefer to have our military and security forces staffed by Singaporeans as far as possible. I will give them the benefit of the doubt that they have exceptional skill, capacity and loyalty. But I cannot fathom still utilizing what amounts to mercenary forces from another country. We have our own elite military and life-saving forces. It doesn’t seem necessary to import manpower for this purpose. If our people cannot match them in skill, capacity and loyalty, let our training standards be raised. If this is not possible, offer them a place in our country as citizens. Even with their proven loyalty so far, it irks me that non-Singaporeans are being employed in such high-stakes roles. It seems like a slap in the face for our born-and-raised military and security professionals.
It seems most comments came from the Gurkhas' own children. What do their parents think, do they want to stay or leave? In UK, I believe Gurkhas are allowed to integrate with the people, unlike Singapore Gurkha. Thus it eventually led to the UK people fighting for their rights to gain citizenships. It takes both hands to claps in order to make a loud enough noise for the govt to take notice of their situation. In Singapore, the Gurkhas seems to be enjoying themselves within the confine of their own people in their restricted compound. Thus, the instrinsic bond with the citizens is missing in this regard, and then return as voices of retired Gurkhas thru the book by Zakarial Zainal. I have no doubt they still missed Singapore.

Filipinos were outnumbered as BRITISH SPECIAL FORCES fighting hand-in-hand with PHILIPPINE SCOUT RANGERS with limited ammunitions against the Communist Chinese Army but decided to pull back and abandoned their comrade Filipino Soldiers as BRITISH SPECIAL FORCES together with the GURKHA tribe soldiers had RETREATED when they realized that they were facing and heavily outnumbered against 40,000 Chinese Soldiers.. But the few 1,400 FILIPINO SPECIAL FORCES “PHILIPPINE SCOUT RANGERS” decided to remain and hold a fight against the mighty 40,000 Chinese Army in order not to capture the rest of South Korea from Communist Chinese.. As a result on that KOREAN WAR, from 1,400 FILIPINO SCOUT RANGERS had a total casualties of 24 dead soldiers and 26 were heavily injured but on the side of CHINESE COMMUNIST ARMY, there were 7,000 Chinese Soldiers killed and a hundreds have been injured on their side... FILIPINOS were holding their lines and post during that KOREAN WAR while BRITISH SOLDIERS together with GURKHA Tribe Soldiers had quickly abandoned their POST and left their fellow comrade FILIPINO SOLDIERS.. This is one of the reason and the real history why SOUTH KOREA got spared from NORTH KOREA with the Chinese Army during the KOREAN WAR..Salute to the FILIPINO SCOUT RANGERS of 1,400 againts 40,000 Chinese Soldiers were the ratio is 1:40 or 1 Filipino Scout Rangers against 40 Chinese Soldiers.. During that KOREAN WAR, One(1) Filipino Scout Ranger should kill Forty(40) Chinese Soldiers in order to matched 40,000 Chinese Army..

some of them don't feel home, in nepal , partly because they were born and raised in another country, and they feel isolated in their own countries, which kinda sucks. a lot them are very weak in their nepali verbally and writing, and the mindset from Nepal and the countries they were raised in, is very different, therefore, very difficult to cope.

The Gurkhas are respected fierce fighter,very loyal I remenber in the 70;S ther is a gurkhas army contigent house ih the former 5SIR in portsdown road near Dover road the even have Nepal Park name after them, also in the 60s to 70s every National day parade ther is a Gurkhas Police marching contigent with their unique style of marching holding the SLR rifile incarry position. Now sadly they house in Aljunied with no participation in any National event. Only call to action when ther is danger and our Singapore police cannot handle the situation just like the Little Iniad riot, Very little is known in actual there is already a battle ready Gurkhas Police Platoon standing by in Farrer Park but was not call to action as the situation was well handle by our Police Force. As such these brave men should be given greater recognation and intergeration in our multi culture society. Sadly they are not to be . I remenber in the 1960 ther is always a keen participation of Gurkhas in the Pesta Sukan Big walkand every year the Gurkhas always are the top winner. As they wear Singapore Police uniform and always perform Vital guard duties in our installation, they were once deploy as Prison Guards alsothat why there is no known prison breakout in Singapore except the Mas Selamat Case. Presently ther are already some PR children serving NS in the army already. Also there are some Taiwanese on contract with the Airport Police and AETOS, about 60% of the AEtos Police are Malaysian. Maybe for Airforce, Guards and Commandos strickly for Sporean Citizen. Very soon SAF will be training with the PLA chinese army. Now we have a Gurkhas Contigent why not a Battlion of PLA army also.I am sure all these forienger wouldlove to serve in the SAF because there is no war, very peaceful an d safe. ha ha I hope the Minister of Defece is not viewing my comments.

You are right, back inmy NS day at 2SIR ther were plenty of Malaysian Malay left over My the Malaysian Armed Forces from RSM CSM RP sergent RQMS, CQMS, COOk SGt , PTI in 1972. But slowly they were phase out.But with the Singapore Citizen Malay their minset have change with our multi cultural society, infact in the Guard Units there is40% malay, commando Unit also start taking in Malay most of the Maly can be found inthe Police Forceand SCDF.Times have change.

I just have to point out that the "Singapore came from third world to first world" is total bull crap... We were the Crown Colony of Singapore and an important port of the East India trading company for over 200 years. By the early 1900's, we had policemen, we had established fire fighters, we had schools, we had a busy sea port, we have a well organized government and much more. The last time we were a third world nation was when we were a fishing village 200+ years ago.
