- As population grows in the geographically restricted island nation of Singapore, there is a dire need for comfortable, sustainable and serene living spaces. Dr. Cheong Koon highlights how Housing and Development board of Singapore is using technology to build a sustainably smart city for a better future.
As head of Housing and Development Board of Singapore, Cheong Koon Hean oversees the development and management of some 1 million public housing flats in 23 towns. She formulated a roadmap to develop better designed, more sustainable and community centric towns. The first woman to head the Urban Redevelopment Authority, she led the planning of the Marina Bay precinct, creating a signature skyline for Singapore and a vibrant live-work-play destination.

Superb Singapore. Proud of the vision, and commitment of the Government. A leading example for the World

Singapore is a dictatorship
Krishnamachari Srinivasan China
A leading example of dictatorship.
Only (national) socialists and communists want such a system.
@@diekritischestimme dictatorship aka Authoritarianism is a model that can be used across all political and economic spectrum. You can be a capitalist while having an Authoritarian govt, where the govt heavily plays their invisible hand in the economy to produce profits. If you guys love the US democracy, aka the ones u serve down the desert in the Middle East, be my guest.
Really interesting use cases, what great outcomes for Singapore ! I just watched it in 2024. I work as a Data Scientist Engineer since 3 years now and smart cities inspire me a lot ever since ! I also deeply consider the new challenges that this system involves - cybersecurity, respect of confidentiality, but also environmental : how to best optimize the data centers' use, to keep saving energy, like the road lights Dr. Cheong Koon talked about.
Wow Singapore I'm so proud of u all...regards from Malaysia. U guys really did good job !! 💯👍
This lady makes me proud of my country!
Just saw this in 2019. So proud of the work done behind the scenes here in my own backyard. These are many of the things done behind the scene that many people may not be aware of. Fellow Singaporean’s if you are watching this , share it with other Singaporeans. Very grateful to all these planning and technology that goes into making life better for us. Thank you TED for the platform that creates this awareness🙏🙏🙏
Do you still think this way? This system can easily be corrupted and your country turned into a tech-dictatorship.
Eventually, you will have the wrong, corrupted people in the government, if you do not have them already.
Masterfully delivered talk. This lady has inspired me to be more informed on urban design. I did not expect so much careful thought and planning to go into the design of a precinct.
My project topic was smart growth and your vedio helped a lot I am really thankful
town planning job could be very smart for smart ones indeed
Excellent, just awesome............many thanks for sharing it
This was beautiful. One of the nicest Ted talks ever heard
Really it is a great improvement for Singapore. I am so proud for it.
she is so dynamic
i love Singapore!!!hope can visit again!
Years ago I thought about the smart cities overall function should act like human body. I'm pretty glad that Dr. Cheong submitted the same concept as well.

yeah it's amazing!!!

Excellent presentation Dr. Cheong, Thank you!
i would make the commercial and apartments as high as i can while suppling enough power from solar panels covering most of the space above. the buildings could have modular walls and floors to fit the business size accordingly, maybe made of air krete. the apartments could be on the top floors, commercial on the bottom 2 floors. half of the buildings and companies would be city owned and half private so you have atleast one of each option for most goods and services.
enough dirt for grass, plants and some trees on the roof to keep the temperature comfortable, maybe geothermal heating and cooling. the roofs would be connected by a large platform/ bridge connecting the corners, underneath could be large multi floor businesses. on the roofs there could be service roads, large bike paths, sport fields and stadiums, parks, cell and radio towers, satelite dishes, metered parking for vehicles and rv's and food trucks and vending machine, ect. industrial could be along the edge around the commercial and apt center some under the dirt, grass and solar panels. then residential on the next layer outside. then outside that would be open farms.
houses with roofs built and used to use solar panels and wind turbines would be subsidized. the first half of residential layers would be divided into small lots for small houses or rv's. you could get a house near your office or side of commercial. you would be allowed to have a mobile permanent address. small wind turbines could be all across the roof too.
I'm waiting for the time when all those will be ready, so developed countries will look around for the smaller ones to help them grow. There's this Korean program in Bulgaria. It's such a big opportunity for us. But I'm clueless on how to prepare a smart city project.
I envy this technogical transition, how I wish this is replicated in Abuja in the nearest future,it will checkmate some negative occurrences and improve security watch.
This is a Smart TED talk.
great idea!! in island, development
The main goal is reduce stress level for the residents, law enforcers, and visitors as well as safety for everyone. One key is density of occupants at any moment must at a workable number like 1000/ 1km**2 at any moment in time. This number is the most ideal to guarantee safety, stress level and all activities at its optimal including communication cell phone internet and sewage level and water and air
Proud to be humans...good job Singapore!
Really appreciate all the advance planning that have been done to develop a great country, some thoughts I have here, do you have something in the smart system to simulate how sound travel and with a way to reduce the noise pollution? I found that the noise echoing is extremely severe in the area I live, a person who talking with normal tone downstair at the park can be pickup easily by the person who live at 10th floor. Would strongly recommend to improve the sound proofing on our buildings. And since we have already started to have solar panel in many of our HDB roof, will there be any chance we will see our electrical bill being reduce?
Really superb ideas .....

The penny is starting to drop. . .
Expanded surveillance is inevitable with these new "smart cities". Bad for us and a dream for the people in power, its part of the "sustainable development program" (agenda21).

This is really awesome technology! I hope to see it used in Canada.
How about we start thinking of a similar here in Canada
great presentation! the mic was not smart enough )) thank you TED.
In my country...I guess ..we build this kind of cities and very successful...outstanding .. lot of Economy very busy.. lot of fun .. “pattaya and Bangkok “

Very practical yet I think it is already applicable to many cities nowadays…that’s how things work. But it’s not enough to achieving smart cities….
Great ideas ma'am I will try to implent this to my home town salem India in a small area
Did you do it?
it depends of the politicians, which in ur country would never allow u to apply
monitoring system is two sided coin, if the authority use it wisely it is a blessed; otherwise it is nightmare to citizen. I wish Dr Cheong vision will cruise to the bright side. cheers from 2021 netizen

What an interesting and excellent speech. Glad I found this
I wish we can have this technology in my country, Malaysia. My country is just next to Singapore and we are way backwards compared to SIngapore, in such terms.

Very nice….

what software is this ?
Ah Heng said to want to attract more "foreign talents" example from India with Indian University degree against the graduates with local degree from from Singapore so that more people can live underground which may subject of flood and fire. It is cheaper to employ foreign degree holder than local degree graduates. Most unemployed degree holder will have to make shift for temporary jobs like driving Grab cars or taxi or working in banks as temporary clerks.
If only we seemed to put this much though in many US cities. There isn't any coherent plan like this.
Believe me you will. Whether you actually like it or not.
True

How costly are data capturing through the sensors that she mentions? Would it be viable for developing nations like India which is having an increasingly growing yet adverse living conditions in Urban areas?
Anjan Babu i think for india, our core and more central problems such as poverty, education, sanitation and corruption will be worked on much more before even reach this stage. Thus, it will be viable much later on. Not right now. However smart cities are being built but i really don't think this sort of efficiency will be achieved soon.
Singapore didn’t start off being a smart city. We started off poor and worked for 20-30 years in our city before we had anything considered smart. But we did the right things for our foundation, moving people from slums to safe public housing, giving people portable water straight from tap, building good roads and walkways, creating a town that is efficient where your basic amenities like groceries, eateries, Malls, libraries, schools, Parks and transport are within 15 mins walk/bus ride from your residence. We also grow trees to beautify the environment and build our water ways such that water can be captured and recycled without waste. A strong foundation in city planning is important to Ensure an effective and efficient environment, future environmental sustainability and continuity. Then these smart technologies works to enhance the people’s lives.
why sensor at home is needed when neighbors are familiar with each others, where a friendly community is maintained?
That's a very important point. All of this sounds very clever, but it does seem impersonal.
what if the elderly is not familiar with the neighbours then what huh?

this kind of smart city idea, where every where is full of sensors, i am afraid will human-bonding get weaker and weaker because there are technology to providing our needs community? for example to turn-off the light with technology you need to produce the sensors the systems and that needs more energy!! but the smartest and most environmentalist way is to teach the community to be environmental-consious and teach them to turn of the light when they are not using.
and paralel to this; the upper administrative level peoples know every thing about the lower level community. so that can cause overcontrol from up. we need technology to collect datas to function well yes but; we need social bonding and strong support & trust environment among the community even more!
Your way is sustainable and their way ultimately is not sustainable (although they claim that is their goal.)
can jungles be converted macro to micro levels for cities ?
What Singapore has done is to grow plants and trees wherever it’s possible. In between roads and buildings, even on top of them and their sides. There are park links all around which is essentially pathways with plants, trees, flowers and small exercise spots connecting larger parks or reservoirs and even the beach. It’s currently a balance of trees and buildings. So if thats what you’re asking, then yes it is possible
I was asking to myself: what kind of computer she uses?... pretty amazing content, congrats!
Is the technology that you mention ..was inside me also?
It would be useful for urban planners so so so that we can know when you are hungry to send our security robots to spoon feed you.

Too many sensors and monitor devices working 24x7 surrounding humans closely may not be very good to health, due to potential risk of electromagnetic radiation, ionizing radiation and even noise radiation. And they themselves and all the data facilities are using energy too.

So many times old architect appropriate ideas of young talented people . It s not fair and not pleasant to listen to. Also people talk about community ? So why not talking about your “team’s work” instead as “I”
