When I went from Twilight princess to Skyward Sword and saw the different lava animations, I felt like it was such an insult to the non-toon-link legacy.
Most realistic thing is that OoT and MM link are walking on the lava and burst into flames instead of sinking. Lava is denser than the human body and you would not be able to do the hand reach thingy TP link does.

TP does respawn, but you’re down several hearts vs Just Fall Damage (and probably having the Low Health alarm going off)
You do respawn in breath of the wild unless you're out of hearts
it may be underwhelming, but in Adventure of Link you die dead and have to restart the game all over again. Oh yeah and Ganon returns too.
