At our 67th anniversary of Malaysia’s independence, I look back at my life as a Chinese Malaysian, and ask myself, are we any closer to a Malaysia which is a Malaysian Malaysia? I lived through the 13 May 1969 race riots as a child in Petaling Garden. I can still remember all too vividly, our neighbourhood stringing up barbed wire on the gates and fences, and having patrols to protect the area. Luckily, Petaling Garden escaped the deadly race riots in neighbouring Kuala Lumpur. Later in primary school, it was still fresh enough in our memories that we could actually talk about whose relatives or friends were killed or injured in the riot. We Chinese Malaysians were the "Other" or "Pendatang" in Malaysia. What I find so ironic is that many Malaysians now tend to look back at the 1970s as a time when Malaysians were more "muhibbah" and tolerant of each other. Yet, for us who lived through the 1970s, it was the decade after the May 13 riots and we were fearful that it could happen again. Talk about looking through rose tinted glasses at the past! The "Other" is always an easy target for racists or nationalists. Even if the other is successful, it becomes the greedy corrupt thieving other who are taking the jobs of the natives. Overseas Chinese are not known as the “Jews of the East” for nothing. Like them, we were curtailed with restrictions to whichever country we migrated to, but we succeeded despite those restrictions to build up a successful and prosperous community in the main. Yet, it’s still tails you win, heads I lose for the Overseas Chinese. You only have to look at the anti-Chinese riots in Indonesia in May 1998. The Chinese Indonesian were already "assimilated" into Indonesia with laws mandating they have Indonesian names, speak only Indonesian, banned Chinese-language schools, etc. Yet, the anti-Chinese riots included looting, arson and the killing of those identified as Chinese! Even when photos showing the rape and killing of Chinese surfaced and were publicised, they were denounced as fakes. They were not fakes because these rapes and killings were substantiated by various NGOs, US State Department, and the UN. In the 1980s, I was a student and then a barrister in London, UK. I joined the anti-apartheid movement and its activities to free Nelson Mandela and to bring an end to the inhuman apartheid system in South Africa. When I was asked why I, a Malaysian, wanted to be part of the anti-apartheid movement, I told them simply, I knew only too well what it meant to be a Second-Class citizen in one's own country! I pay the same taxes and dues as a Malaysian, but as a Chinese Malaysian, received less benefit back from the Malaysian government and less privileged compared to a Malay Malaysian. In the 1990s, I joined the Territorial Army in Kuala Lumpur, retiring at the rank of Major. I still remember when I joined, the regular non-Malay officers, Chinese and Indians alike, told me that the glass ceiling for non- Malay officers was the rank of Major in the army. At first, I didn't believe them, but later I found that out to be all too true. And yet, certain Malay politicians keep parroting that Chinese Malaysians are not patriotic or too materialistic to join the military. However, they quietly side-stepped the issue of racism in the military which promotes junior Malay officers over senior non-Malay officers. It's no secret and when I published my experience in the Malaysian Insider in the 2000s, many non-Malay retired officers commented on similar fates. Too many had their junior Malay officers promoted over them, despite the fact that they were well over-qualified and over-seniority for promotion. All this non-Malay officers and rank and file alike, volunteered to defend Malaysia against its enemies at the risk of life and limb. For King and Country! In the early 2000s, to prove these Malay politicians wrong, I took it as a challenge to bolster recruitment of the Chinese into the military. I started recruiting Chinese students for the Territorial Army from TAR College, and my spiel was about challenging yourself and being the best that you can be. That went down well with them but it was my last message which struck a chord with them. I told them, by learning to protect yourself, you will also be learning to protect your community in Malaysia. They understood what I meant and that probably pushed many into joining. Many will probably remember that certain Malay politicians have always pushed the message for the Chinese to behave themselves or that another May 13 could occur. So, in some ways, these politicians helped my message to these Chinese students. So, what is the future of Chinese Malaysians? It is very telling that in the last two decades or so, almost two million Malaysians have emigrated to Singapore, with countless to other countries. In a 2011 World Bank Report, they found out that 90% of those emigrating to Singapore were Chinese Malaysians, and for all the reasons that Chinese Malaysians know only too well. My children are Singaporean citizens now. When asked why they became Singaporeans, they replied that they couldn't stand the discrimination and corruption in Malaysia. Sadly, I noticed that more and more younger Malaysians can't wait to convert to Singaporean citizenship once they are able to. So unlike those of my generation who came to Singapore in the 1980s, and kept their citizenship up to now by just being Singapore PR. Perhaps being naive or having lived in a Malaysia which was more muhibbah, we hope against hope that Malaysia may yet be a Malaysian Malaysia and not a Malay Malaysia. However, we are getting fewer and fewer every year, whilst more and more Millennials and Gen Z Malaysians who are in Singapore convert to Singaporean citizenship as soon as they can.
WOWWWW!!! Proud to be Malaysian, this is the best Malaysia song I ever heard. Love it so much. Due to the pandemic, my students extremely miss their performance days. Since 31st August is around the corner, I have an idea which is using this video and make a combination with my students' voices. It is a great storytelling way to remind the children and people about the Malaysia history and its beautiful through music. I would like to ask for the permission here.
