I also think paleontology is really appealing to kids, as far as your point about "dinosaurs are a child's introduction to science." When you're a kid, the world is scary in part because it's huge and filled with stuff more powerful than you are. "Big reptilian monsters" relate to that aspect of the world - they're not as remote as chemistry, physics or geology - but suddenly being knowledgeable about something cool, and in the larger sense that even something that big can be something that makes sense, is hugely empowering to a child.

My thing about it is, and this is partially covered by some points in this video, dinos are as much fantasy as they are science. We have no way of knowing how they looked or behaved, so people love making interpretations of monsters which may have existed. You covered this obviously.
Another thing that makes dinos and their predecessors more popular to the mainstream than the mammals after them (such as sabre cats and mammoths) is they're unlike any animal today. The fact that such bizzare and terrifying animals lived on earth till 65 million years ago will, as mentioned, fascinate people, much more than say mammoths or sabre cats, which are similar to modern mammals.
Kinda saddens me that other ancient creatures don't get the same attention as dinosaurs, such as mammal reptiles, cause hit blockbusters haven't been made about them. I love stem mammals myself. Especially gorgonopsids... the idea mammals evolved from reptiles is endlessly fascinating to me.

1 - Jurassic Park and The Land Before Time
2 - They are Big and Dangerous (yes, even herbivores can be dangerous, because of their size, but also because of defence mechanisms)
3 - Extinct Animals from long long time ago
there are so many things to talk about but that was in short, why dinosaurus are my favorite animals.
as for three, that they are Extinct from long ago, thats maybe also the reason i love Mammoths or Dodo's. but dinosaurs are better because they were extinct before humans begin they're lifes and its all mysterious.

The thing you mentioned about surface interests you had as a child growing into adult obsessions and careers is something I can super recognize. It wasn't dinosaurs for me, it was machines and that has grown into not just learning detailed information about specific machines but also engineering principles and history. At first I thought they were cool because they were huge moving things that awed me as a child and now I appreciate the design, work and material science that went into it as well as logistics, manufacturing etc. It has grown so much and into so many things that in a way it still feels like when I was a child being awed by the scale but now it's just the enormous amount of information that's out there and how I can keep learning. And I mean now my goal in life is to become an engineer so I can myself work on these machines, create new ones and get to know them in detail.

I always looked at dinosaurs as these giant creatures of the past that died out millions of years ago. My general interests in biology and history drew me closer to paleontology. Although like most people, I started liking dinosaurs when I was very young and unlike most people, I couldn't quite move on to other interests like how I did with teletubbies. In 2016 I went on holidays to Utah and ended up being taken backstage in the Utah University because one of the employees heard me lecturing my father about Cleveland Lloyd. They were only excavating a parasaurolophus skull from plastered soil and trying to identify a few turtle fossils but it was cool nonetheless. (in 2016, I was eleven years old)

I think the part of thinking it's cool and exotic to be reminded that things greater than yourself is a rather privileged upper middle class dude thing to say, for someone who's a minority, and/or female, poor, disabled or similar, they will already have spent most of their upbringing knowing they aren't the "default" our culture revolves around and having to take the views and behavior of the majority into account. As someone with Aspergers syndrome, the appeal of such creatures for me wasn't some desire to be humbled, because feeling small and useless was an everyday experience going to school with a condition that made following social codes even harder than for regular school kids, the appeal was in the idea of a simpler world full of creatures beyond all the petty concerns and problems in everyday social life and knowing dinosaurs don't care, and that's also why I think dinosaurs appeal to many kids on the spectrum.

The reign and fall of the dinosaurs is kinda reminiscent of an ancient empire, like the Egyptians or the Romans. They were a mighty dynasty that seemed to have ruled forever and seemed completely indestructible... and then it all ended. It just sounds like a tragedy and at the same time it reminds us that nothing lasts forever, which in many ways reminds us of our own mortality. We are fascinated by stories of ficticious empires like Atlantis. Yet the fact that dinosaurs were actually real seems to bridge the gap between reality and legends.

  • @Pssybart

I guess you could compare our fascination with dinosaurs to our fascination with ancient civilizations.
The reign of the dinosaurs was grand and long... and then it suddenly ended... kinda like how all the great empires have fallen: The Romans, The Aztecs, The Egyptians...
There's a reason why we like to turn ancient civilizations into legends. We picture these ancient people as extraordinarily wise, with knowledge that has long since been lost to time. It's kinda like how dinosaurs are depicted as extraordinarily ferocious. If we actually had the ability to travel back in time and meet the ancient Egyptians, we'd probably find that most people in that era were just ordinary individuals, not too different from us. It works the same way with dinosaurs. They weren't mythical monsters. They were just ordinary animals that happened to live in the ideal circumstances to grow large.
But to me that's part of the appeal. To discover how these animals actually lived, ate, slept and mated is as fascinating as to learn about the advanced bathroom fascilities in Pompeii. It gives us a small glimpse into the lives of animals that have long since passed.

i think its because of the mystery of them keep in mind that we have almost nothing like dinosaurs on earth ,with the exception of birds the non avian dinosaurs went extinct and cause of their size that can make an elephant look like a mouse the sauropods would be an amazing sight to see , the spinosaurus with the sail and fish eating semi aquatic creature

Nowadays we are using CGI to recreate actors originally played by long dead actors. *cough* *cough* rogue one *cough* *cough*. I find it disappointing that we can recreate these actors faces but can't get a dinosaur that looks alive. Like a living, breathing thing. Nowhere do you see dinosaurs twitching or shaking away fly's or driving eachother away rather than killing eachother. Okay, maybe the last one is planet dinosaur but play a gif in your head of a lion running but slowly to save energy. Then play a gif of a charcharodontosaurus driving away it's rival. Now play a gif of a wildebeest charging at a lion and stopping abruptly as the lion retreats. I just feels like animals have a feeling of unpredictability that no animator can recreate.

I've still have this question that kept on bothering me:How do we really know what Dinosaurs would've look like through their skeletons? And What if we've misplaced the bones of them that belong to other species that we didn't really know?

Looking at similar living animals + fossil evidence such as scale and feather impressions, muscle attachment points, and footprints, as well as inferring what less complete specimens might have looked like based on more complete specimens of related species. Getting parts mixed up or arranged incorrectly has happened numerous times, such as Iguanadon and the whole brachiosaurus/apatasaurus/brontosaurus thing.

Excellent video! Couldn't have said it better myself!
As much as our perception of dinosaurs has changed greatly over the years, it probably hasn't changed fast enough on a pop-cultural level in relation to what science now describes them as. When the Jurassic Park/World series draws to a close, it would be interesting to see if the public responds well to such a realistic yet engaging depiction of dinosaurs.
