CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Julie (Jean Simmons) and Jim (Gregory Peck) have a storytelling contest to see who can outlast the other.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In The Big Country Gregory Peck plays a seafaring man who heads west to marry Carroll Baker, the daughter of rancher Charles Bickford. Bickford is currently embroiled in a water-rights feud with covetous Burl Ives, so both he and his daughter are hoping that Peck can take care of himself. But Peck, who doesn't belief in fisticuffs, appears to be a coward, especially when challenged by Bickford's cocksure foreman Charlton Heston. The far-from-cowardly Peck decides to distance himself from the machismo overload at the Bickford spread, settling for a romance with headstrong schoolmarm Jean Simmons, whose water-rich lands are being fought over by the two warring ranchers. When Jean is kidnapped by Ives' no-good son Chuck Connors, Peck decides to take action.

I read that they nearly made Roman Holiday together because director Wyler wanted to wait for her at first to be available instead of casting someone else, but, of course, that wasn't what fate wanted.

Interesting. Glad things turned out the way they did. Both movies are legendary.
I love Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday, and she ended up winning the Oscar for best actress.. still, I think Ms Simmons would have given a better performance in the role. Aesthetically, Jean was also much more beautiful.
Jean Simmons did a great job of making me fall in love with her as a person as the film went on.
Maybe it's because when it comes to beauty and character, I'll always love the woman with sound and upright moral character than the woman who's drop dead gorgeous

Why did they have to cut out the kissing scene here. I seem to remember they kissed at the end of the scene.
No. That wouldn't have happened because at this point Greg is still happily engaged to the Terrill girl. He's buying Big Muddy from Julie as a present for her.

@@patrick4662 I think you're right. They embrace just before his pistol duel with Buck at the Hannasey homestead, but I don't remember them kissing. But then they didn't need to, did they.
They never kissed once. But the way they exchanged glances in the final scene said it all. ❤
