Today in the Vendee Globe 2020 race, the Sea Wolves soak up the wisdom of a true old salt! The only Dutchman ever to have Finished the Vendee Glove race in his IMOCA "No way Back". Pieter's story is unique because he didn't just finish, he broke just about every convention to get himself into this dream race. A late entry, no significant experience with IMOCA sailing and no Dutch previous finishers to learn from, his story is one of stepping into the dark, and fighting for every single mile. And he made it, but not without his share of battles, both on and off the water. In this very open interview Pieter talks at length about what it takes, and what it means, to take part in this great and dangerous adventure.
Special thanks to all our subscribers and Backers/patrons for your support, with your support, this is the type of content that we can aspire to make. In studio, with real quality on every front. So if you lobe this interview, please consider sharing a couple of bucks with the Sea Wolves so we can keep planning and making this type of fun, insightful inquiry into the world of sailing and sailing technology.
Also in this one. Update on Vendee Globe today and Jules Verne race!

Great show. Featuring an original, a real and still living sea flying Dutchman. A living legend. Right in the tradition of the Netherlands, the original country of so many legendary sea adventurers over the centuries. - Go on that way, Florian. Keep that fantastic sea spirit alive and kicking.

    Fantastic episode! Extraordinary interview!
You managed to make your interlocutors and guests feel at ease. You seemed more like you out of the comfort zone than them, but that's exactly how you have to make your guests feel! Fantastic ! They were so comfortable that the interview turned around. I share with you the desire for adventure, true, even hard and made of commitment but I don't know if the extreme ones in the true sense of the word are for me. They are also paths that must be taken in due time. In any case, great episode. One day we could organize participation in a demanding and serious regatta like the Middle Sea Race (Mediterranean, sun, no cold seas and constant breezes not cold and cutting winds ... to start with) or you could support participation with your channel!
Things to come! For now, thank you for entertaining me in this lockdown period and for sharing the Vendée Globe with many Sea Wolves.

The most interesting and honest experience-interview for normal humans, by means that he was not a professional sailor and gave a complete feeling of his experience. A lot of things are de facto for the pros and they don't even mention. Of course being a millionaire exclude him from normal, but still his experience, was closer to everyday sailor's talk. Every second of the video was really interesting. We saw your thirst for info, with really good questions, but was a bit unfair for the journalist. Even when he asked something you took it from him.. That is a point for improvement for the future. Now about his autopilot problem, since I am a pro on that, I can tell you that it was a fault on his behalf, a thing that he admitted himself, and a problem that I face every time I find my self on a new delivered boat on the market. The instruments and the autopilot was never programmed for that boat. And if for a production boat you need 2 hours, for an Imoca you need 2 months. And still you have to be able to fiddle along the trip depending weather etc. It's like trimming tha sails. All VG sailors play with their autopilots very often. Thanks for your efforts. I really enjoy your show. (except for the moment that I listen through that mic you swollow that coffee). It's maybe time to stop that. Sorry if I'm a bit critical, I am skipping that part and watch the rest of the show. Good night

Sodebo is "ONLY" doing 700miles/24h average, this is why they loose the advance they once had. On the next 10 days (ten days!!) Sodebo should average more than 800 miles/day to keep up with Francis JOYON record. this is how amazing Joyon has done 4 years ago. the boat has the potential to do it, but only with very very lucky weather conditions. I loved this interview because we are not used to listen to an experienced sailor, nor any other expert in anything, speaking so straight forward. On the other hand I am sick of listening to people saying lies on the paper, on the radio and on TV. Bullshit fooling us all the time since I was little but VERY specially these days, instead of speaking the truth frankly which is something that should be the norm instead.
    Very much appreciated it!
It seems to me that it is just the way Pieter is. I am also this way, and I know well that this type of behaviour showing your cards while playing the game of life is giving too many advantages to the competitors but has some advantages to myself too (and probably many more disadvantages also).
I loved when he explained that making a boat 200Kg heavier costs MUCH less time after two or three months, than having to slow down to fix things that broke for being too light, no telling if they loose the boat instead of simply having to retire from the competition.
I also loved what he said about the autopilot manufacturer (shame on the factory and on the vendors that fool their customers and never get what they deserve).
It was a pleasure and very easy to watch and a big and really nice surprise, as well as a super interesting chat to listen to from the technical points of view. Thank you VERY much to you guys!
By the way... How is that three Dutch gentelmen learnt how to speak such a good English? Is English an easy language for Dutchs?
Have you guys lived for a long time abroad, I mean in an English speaking country, or always in the Nederlands? Is it that being neigbours makes things easy? I am a Spaniard and for us understanding Portuguese or French is not easy at all, but quite dificult (as dificult as learning English or German) but on the other hand people from Portugal understand Spanish very easily (I have seen often that languages inteligebilty is not mutual).

I used to sail on merchant ships and can relate to the life but what fascinates me is going solo, non stop, unassisted , under wind power only on something that's 1/10th the size of what I was use to and that needs constant attention. And Pieter provided a great glimpse into what mindset drives that..... the urgent need to take that dump :-D

Thanks for the great podcast! You were talking about capsizing like it's nothing special... as an outsider who has only capsized with a Laser: how do you get such a big boat upright again?? I absolutely can't imagine this!
