- “This Land Rover is very simple. The idea behind the vehicle is to go as many places as possible, using as few resources as possible,” photographer Sean Reagan says. He, his partner Mittie Roger, and their Land Rover Defender “La Poderosa” are on an adventure-with no end in sight.
The duo’s 1995 Land Rover Defender is central to their careers in photography and travel writing, and throughout seven years in Mexico and Central America, Reagan has taken the off-roader anywhere they’ve wanted to go.
“Unlike possessions, memories are what you’ll always have. Even the hard times, when you look back on them,” Mittie Roger says, “they can be funny, they can be inspiring…they change over time.”
Now part of the Land Rover community, Roger says that the truck has been stripped to the bare essentials and is simple for one very important reason: reliability is extremely important when you’re far off the beaten path.
““I love the simplicity of the Defender. I mean, she’s a totally utilitarian vehicle. She gets us where we need to go, whether that’s an off-road, difficult-to-reach place or whether it’s a long-distance trip on highways,” Roger says. “If she breaks down, we can fix her. There’s nothing to get stolen, there are no locks on the doors.”
The Defender, a ‘she’, is named La Poderosa, meaning, “the powerful”, a name was given to the truck by a group of men who used to watch over a parking lot where the Land Rover was parked at night.
“She shares the experience with us. There’s no place that I can’t go, that I’d say, ‘Oh, well, we can’t go there’. The most rewarding thing about my lifestyle is probably the freedom-and realizing that I can do it,“ Reagan said.

This show makes all other car shows look silly. No dyno numbers or power slides. Just beautiful stories about people and the cars they love.
@DwarvishPasty Good for you Dwarvish.
I wish they talked more about their Defender rather than themselves and what they (can) do.....
hipcat13 Well, the 2nd half was better.....
Lol I eschew personal possessions here is a video about my personal possession.
So do I.
This video has changed my life. I was contemplating making a big move and completely changing my lifestyle, but this video is what has pushed me over the edge. Thank you, Mr. Reagan, for helping show me the way.
One of the vehicles I must own before I die.
The list keeps getting longer, lol.
Defender 90s were impoted to the USA in 1994, 1995 & 1997. They are spendy. However, now that the first Defenders (1990-on) are turning 25 years old, they are legal to import to the USA. I suggest a diesel- the first Defender used the 200Tdi- great engine. Be careful though, many rusty heaps out there! (Frame & bulkhead is steel and cheap steel at that!
Paul K Thanks!
***** Maybe, but I like the Land Rover.
***** that was a good one......keep trying...
+Abel Harbour True, They called Land Rover 90 and so with non turbo diesel engine. Name Defender started in 1990 when it was introduced in Frankfurt motor show with TDI 200 engine.
Thank you for this. What a great couple you are. And what amazing stories you'll tell your grandchildren around the campfire as you inspire them to live happy and fulfilled lives.
"Save up a couple thousand." - Sean Reagan.
He makes it sound so simple.
That's how people end up dead trying to be Alexander Supertramp. This guy is 100% a smoothbrain.
@@benjaminyu8545 given his "profession", I'd guess his father is a wealthy lobbyist, or something similar. I lived in an expensive building in DC once, and it was full of 20 somethings that, unless they were each earning north of 125k a year, could not afford those accommodations. My working theory was they were to adult kids of lobbyists, who had moved out of the house, and Daddy was paying for most of their expenses.
Wow! So inspiring. This man is living the life!!!
Sohail Desai yes
Peace and Love... lol . That defender deserve a better driver ! xD
This is how every Land Rover should be. Awesome!
Love the diversity! It doesn't matter if it's a $5 million dollar Ferrari or a humble Land rover, it's about the story and the bond people have with their cars.........When you hear people refer to their car as ''she'' you know they get it.
Sadly, Land Rover Defenders are getting up there but so are Toyota Land Cruisers and Mercedes G Wagons have always commanded big bucks. I see a few Land Rovers from the 60's. One in my town in fact and a few in Portland, Oregon. One I know of with a Perkins Diesel. Well, even a well set up Jeep has value. Anything in good shape with 4WD serves a purpose that a regular car just can't do.
Love the Defender series. amazing how they hold their value.
and this video? another work of art. love this channel.
I'm here in Costa Rica ,my old landcruiser diesel loves this kind of adventure, nothing beats the richness of travel.sell everything and just do it!
This channel puts out such great stuff. incredible camera work and video/cut quality. sound is just brilliant. stories are awesome.
man!!!!!
marino4691 That end shot of the setting sun............
marino4691 Seriously; the most consistently beautiful car films of any channel.. Makes NO sense that this channel doesn't have millions of subscribers. There is way worse car content with more subs...
Kaleido I stumbled upon the Channel early last year at the ''Ferrari 250 gt Lusso morning ritual video'' whilst searching for "Ferrari" , then in one sitting watched every single video, i literally couldn't stop!
Kaleido It's a matter of class. Not everybody has it let alone can they appreciate it when they see it. That may make me seem snobby but so be it.
Beautiful video! I'm fresh outta college and have just started a corporate 9-5 job, yet seeing this makes me want to escape my drab, routine life and travel like these two...
This video is making me Hungry for a #12 Combination plate!
Cheese Enchilada, chili relleño, beef taco, Beans and Rice; served with Chips and Salsa.
A large side of Pepto Bismo...............
Mr. Johnson lol ok
How can this video have any dislikes at all. This video is perfection, 2 people living their ultimate lives in happiness, how can this not deserve a like?
Petrolicious I think this is by far the most important and influential video you've done. Absolutely amazing, hats off to you guys
This film is brilliant. This guy is so insightful, as good a pitch as any I've ever heard about 'taking the plunge'. Masterful.
Been there and doing that, Sean bascially took the words out of my mouth....5 years in Costa Rica, and I own westwind 4x4....we restore Land Rovers and Toyota Land Cruisers. As I always say...."Burn your Boats"
Beautiful couple, beautiful story, beautiful car.
This is such an AMAZING CHANNEL.
Seriously! Even the major channels like /DRIVE don't seem to be as good as you anymore.
Keep it up plz!
I've probably watched 100 episodes on this channel so far. This one is my favorite!
Wonderful little film, great Defender. I’m so lucky to own one.
I'd like a full documentary of this. This is beautiful.
They probably named it "La Poderosa" for they motorcycle el "che" guevara used to travel through america..
Saludos desde argentina.
Just owners stories, iconic vehicles and stunning videography.
super, que buen video con La Poderosa
Very inspiring.
As a Jeep enthusiast I must say that that LR is very appealing. It's got quite the look. Now I can see that 20 years from now people like him are going to be waxing sentimentally about the mighty Jeep JK Wranglers.
thanks Sean...this is what I have been needing to hear the past 3 years.
Bravo! I completed the Pan American Highway last year. Loved Mexico, Central and South America. Cheers!
"Vaya La Poderosa, mas bien La Reina". Nice.
Awesome.
La Poderosa is a dream! But these 2 guys are just amazing people, I am happy to met them in San Miguel de Allende.
Best Petrolicious video yet!
Maybe the best story of all ...
That's inspiring...
Wonderful
I am lucky enough to own a 1952 80" Series 1 and it will run rings around Disco's and Freelanders off road. The defender really is a testament to "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
I will say that floorboard wear where his feet are by the pedals is AMAZING! love it
These videos get longer and longer. I love that.
I can't imagine an other car being more complementary and supportive to mankind as this one!
"The Land Rover Defender is an extremely reliable vehicle." Gotcha! However, that they only start every other morning does not prevent me form wanting one. Nice film.
I love this video equally as a lifestyle piece and a vehicular documentary, of course, that's what Petrolicious is all about. You're the best at what you do, don't stop.
love hearing people talk about land rover like this
The more dents you get in a Defender, the better looking it gets and it tells a story. It’s like anyone with scars, I have a few and I’ve kept all of them. They tell a story about my life as do dents on a vehicle. Keep your dents and be proud of them, shared experiences.
Another great video
Thanks for uploading
Great philosophy... It's too easy to let yourself get brainwashed with what sosiety expects... really loved this video... Oh, and the Land Rover was pretty bad ass as well :)
This is so inspiring. Great way of living!
Great story!
Love Land Rovers. They are beautiful trucks that can go over just about anything but I definitely wouldn't call the reliable. That's the one thing they've always struggled with. That's what a Land Cruiser is for.
I had the opportunity to deal with both as long term use, my Dad had a 78 landcruiser diesel BJ 42 and I had a defender 200 tdi, they are pretty similar also the BJ was non turbo and no PS the defender has PS and had a turbo they were both great although the BJ was rusting quite a bit, Both had well over 350 K KMS when parting from them. One thing the BJ had over the defender was the quality of the wiring harness and the electrical in general other than that they were pretty close.
Guillaume Laplanche that's awesome that you had the opportunity to own both iconic trucks. All I'm saying is the Land Cruisers were known to be a bit more reliable in general.
I love Land Rover! Me and my dad have four together. Our first was a 1984 110. It is a MAC registration which means it was owned and used by Land Rover themselves. Unfortunately, it needs a full body restoration because it got neglected for a month, then a year and then years. We do not have the money to fix it ourselves. If anyone wants to help out with spare parts or donations please comment and I will give you my email address to get in contact with. Thank you so much everyone, it would be a painful sight to let it go. It has so much meaning as a vehicle.
Great video, I love the vents under the windows. Simple, barebones is the way to go.
WOW! A great piece of art this video IS!
That was actually really calming and inspiring. Great channel!
Am in love!
One of the best philosophies out there.
Fantastic video and a cool couple with their priorities straight. VERY nice.
Great story !
Thanks for sharing 🤗
Cheers 🍻
As always, great vid. But i felt like this one was more about the owners personal views and outlook on life rather than his story or connection to the Rover. He would start to talk about his connection to the car and then kind of veer off on some life tangent for 2-3mins. Its great to know he loves his life and what he does for a living but I personally would have liked to hear more about the Rover.
Bravo !!!
Love your Video! Just amazing shots and a really inspirational Story!
Sean busqué tus fotos, muy buenas, felicidades.
4:25 YOU RAN A RED LIGHT!
no license plate, so it is all good.
One of the best films ever produced
Sean; love your Defender. Just perfect! I also love your outlook on life, it's a great video, as ALWAYS with Petrolicious. Endearing....and makes me very envious of the life you have. Keep it up!
Drone shots!
It's really wonderful how These Videos are Made and how These cars are presented it's the only American car channel which you can actually really enjoy!
Keep up the spirit of classic cars and interesting storys about them.
That's dope!
Wowwwwww😍 that stance ❤
Perfect for getting back to the Acapulco Gold crops ·
Epic.
Wow awesome video . Love Land Rover defenders . They just look like there on a adventure setting still . Cheers from Steve Stott in Sutherlin Oregon U.S.A.
This is my new fav petrolicious video, I would love to travel and explore I just never thought that I could afford to do it and this guy and gal group makes me want to take the risk maybe not a lifestyle change but rather save up money and vacation time to escape the norm for about a month to do some soul searching but I do love his idea of making his life the party and working to keep the party going rather than most ppl living/working for the weekend
I love this adventure type theme! You guys should do a video with an '80s VW Vanagon.
absolutely beautiful story and what an amazing experience!
i own a restored kzj70 land cruiser
Good luck with the journey
Amazing video
Awesome video
It's not a car, it's a lifestyle :)
Lovely little film; I had a Series 3 Land Rover for a while and it was one of the mostly poorly built vehicles I have owned and the when I bought it it had been poorly maintained as well. But once fixed it was pretty good. But its general abilities were so outshone by my 1992 Subaru L-series; also on death's door when I bought it. Things used to break on the Land Rover - door handles, switches, the ignition lock (twice), air-vent hinge. Anything made of plastic seemed fragile and anything made of metal was crude. I think it could have been made good long-term but I ran out of patience with it. I've instead been rebuilding the Subaru on and off (it's my daily driver) and I have another that will be converted for serious off-road adventure. I loved the film though - many thanks.
Maintenance is important, for sure, and I have my own standards for it. Mechanical sympathy is certainly a factor as well as environment.
That old GM-designed V8 (Buick 215) that Rover used for decades had many issues throughout its service life. Obviously, this is a case where it's produced good service, but from my experiences, it is more of an exception to the rule.
irritablearchitect Hehe, yea I like how this was like "yea I don't need money, so we kept the Land Rover" being in the auto industry Land Rovers are anything but inexpensive, lol. Especially the one they have!
Ali Ahadi Yeah, it's probably the most loved or hated. There seems to be little in between.
The ones who get longevity out of them are usually the type who stay on top of the PM and pay for it, or who are handy with the spanners.
irritablearchitect Exactly, I also don't know where people are getting their drivetrain fixed or overhauled for anything less than an arm or leg. I mean there is a reason why a mint Defender can go for over $100K.
Ali Ahadi Mexican ingenuity can be surprisingly inexpensive. We've gotten creative to keep the costs low.
Mittie Babette Roger that's good to hear ☺
Not really a land rover fan, I hate working on them and they seem to break a lot. But I like the life style these people are living and the drone flying/video is fantastic.
Reliable in Defender ways.. haha.
But It's true.. Drive a Land Rover is so original..
great, lekker movie ,, one life live it ''
reminds me of the story about the american businessman and mexican fisherman... pretty cool stuff.
"People are excited, they love that stuff" Sounds so familiar. I'm pretty sure someone somewhere said it just like that.
emotion guys, that's wat it is all about. :)
That was a good one Petrolicious. It'd be awesome if you could get him to do an article on how to explore Mexico "safely". I've toured all around this country, but very much YEARN to explore Mexico. I've questioned safety and travel though. I utilized your article about car stuff in LA when I was there passing through. Please do a how to tour Mexico article...that'd be AWESOME!
Their lives fit with Land Rover
That was a really interesting video. Lovely car and what I consider to be a very human story.
❤
Very nice car! I just recently came back from a Safari and our vehicle was a Defender 110. Though it didn't feel as solid as a Land Cruiser (though I may be biased since I have one :P), it did the job quite nicely. I was impressed.
Land rover and reliable never go in the same sentence.
They only stopped making the defender because of stupid EU regulations.
***** Butthurt Jeep owner detected.
itsthatsebguy93 envy is a nasty thing
+ambre belaire land rovers were the first car most of the developing world Saw the first car to cross Africa the list goes on and on
They were produced for 68 years and the sales absolutely destroyed anything jeep can do
Ever wondered why landrover a sold all over the world for 68 years yet nobody outside of muraca will buy jeeps because mericunts are too patriotic to buy anything better
@@Aron-ru5zk Yeah! bro, right on the money, you nailed it right there!
I've got a 90 defender, and love it.
nice video
as a Brit, I should point out that a "Rover" is a completely different brand to a "Land Rover" although they were all once owned by the same corporation, they have been separate companies for well over 25 years now. As such we would never call a Defender a "Rover", we would call it a "Landy"
love your videos...super well done. There is a huge International Harvester Scout 800 and II's market with little to zero content. Would love to see something like this.
You guys have outdone yourselves! What an inspirational video! I'm ready to quit my 9-5 and drive a classic car around Latin America... I'm thinking baja bug over a defender, though.
Really? Am I watching Portlandia?
Mike Kai toplel. The vapid regurgitation of cliches that the girl came out with in that horrible west coast cadence at 2:00 had me thinking the same thing.
>Liek, memories toadally last forever...
can you guys make more adventurous 4x4 videos. Both the landys and fj I enjoy alot and the storyline is so amazing . Keep up the good work
I've wanted a defender since I was a little kid. My dad got a 1998 Discovery tho and that almost quenched the thirst...one day tho
Same, apart from i've grown up with a household of citroens
Best story yet! Petrilicious has so many incredible expensive cars, wich i will not be able to own in the near future. It is great to get to know them, but i would love to see some reasonably priced cars on Petrolicious.
Thank you guys, you are the best RUclips car-channel.
How do you get your money? Sponsors?
