I do disrespectfully disagree with you about Zidane. At the start he focuses on small things and trivializes matters because that's how he learns to cope. He keeps a lot of people at a certain distance but also tries to help everyone, likely in a desire to feel his life is worthwhile. And then he finally breaks when he discovers his true purpose, which is the exact opposite of what he's been trying to be his whole life. And he grows so very much from it.
Agreed. The not brooding main character is refreshing. Zidane is my personal favorite from every final fantasy character ever created. Also, thief protagonists aren't common in the series either- you are usually a knight or mercenary. My list of why goes on and on... Including what you mentioned. I also disagree with Rusty not being important. The dialogue between the whole main group brings me joy. Ff9 is the best!
@Downfall1080 The only other MC that's a thief in the series is Locke, and Zidane is a heavy homage to him. I think because Garnet and Vivi are often the stars of the game because of the Eidolons and Black Mages, it can be easy to overlook the nuances of the other characters.
I really used to dislike Steiner but he grew on me. He's obnoxious to start with but his gradual disillusionment of everything he's based his life around and then reforming his purpose is well executed.
@@rpproductions6241 Same here tbh. I played this game when it first was released. I was 10 years old. I didn't like him too much either. I felt like his placement was comical relief. As that still is the case, his role/where he fits and growth are much more clear in my Adult years. Makes him endearing and almost just as important as all the others involved in the story. FFIX's main cast are pretty fleshed out compared to other titles as well considering you do take role of some of these cast members AND A.T.E. I find that every character has a place- even if small. I don't think I could come up with a tier list lol. Thanks for the Locke reminder! Still, a thief with a little more of a positive attitude (he isn't bubbly/always go-lucky either) is less common than the other more common Main Characters presented in Final Fantasy titles (brooding swordsman). Don't get me wrong; Squall is my second fav main in the series maybe because I enjoy VIII second most and he is pretty cool. I also am a Shadow the Hedgehog fan. So, brooding isn't a deterrent.
I can't forgive Steiner being DISRESPECTED LIKE THIS!!!!!! But it's okay because Amarant gets the respect he deserves (which is none)

Here's the thing about Zidane. He's the vehicle for everybody else's character development because, aside from that very short stint in Pandemonium, he always knew who he is and what he wanted to do. His entire purpose was helping everybody else figure that out so that they could be there for him when he lost his way. Highly underrated.

Fair enough. I like Steiner, and his trust in Zidane towards the later half of the game is something I've always appreciated about him. That being said, Steiner should have died during the siege of Alexandria (heroically), and been replaced by Beatrix. Fight me.

That actually would have been pretty cool. And damn, it would have been one more thing that would have contributed to Garnet's crippling depression during the first half of disc 3.

His character development is almost on par with Vivi's (imo). All he's ever known is fealty to the queen and protecting the princess. Even in the face of adversity and mockery he doesn't ever falter.
Then eventually after he sees what's Brahne is doing he begins to doubt himself and what his life was all about. He finally comes to his senses and learns what it is to make your own choices, before swearing to protect his friends. He even finds love at the end!
Honestly one of the most satisfying character arcs in a video game.

Ah man, I feel like you're doing Zidane a little bit of a disservice here, lol. I would say his main characteristic is selflessness. He's the classic Rogue with a heart of gold. He goes out of his way to help people consistently throughout the story, and is always supportive of other people in general, like how he immediately develops the demeanor of a big brother towards Vivi. I agree that the whole clone thing is a little weak as a backstory reveal, and his existential crisis always seemed rushed to me. I mean, the music is good, and it's a great moment, but then it's over. My biggest complaint would be Zidane's lack of growth throughout the story, he's got a somewhat flat arc with a little blip towards the end. Great video as always man!
@@dayzovc I've caught that, I just feel like it could have been extrapolated on a little more. Zidane HAS an arc, the problem is it only lasts for an hour or so and then he just kinda gets over it.
Oh boy, Zidane is way way WAAAAAAY too low for me lol.
He's got alot going on outside and inside, and what makes him fun is he has different sides to him that are reflective to the people he interacts with.
He's a big brother and life coach to Vivi.
He's a sturdy rock and becomes an irreaplacable partner to Garnet when they get past the flirty phase.
He's a dastardly albeit very useful scoundrel to Stenier who eventually comes to view Zidane as a reliable comrade and brother-in-arms.
And so on and so on. One of the series' best protags.
I do agree, Beatrix (in my opinion) is the best FF side characters.. I just wish she should've have more screen time
I wish she had been a playable character like the creators apparently originally intended. Maybe if we ever get that remake.

Questioning her actions and following order despite the fact she's been just lead astray.. she could be playable more, especially with her unique paladin style, but at the same time because of that many characters would become usless. She seemed to be quite unbalanced
@Zensbu oh yeah I would have wanted her to be more balanced because she definitely is pretty powerful. And she shares moves with Steiner. But she's an incredible character.

She's strong and hot. But as a Freya fan and a strong supporter of the rat folk in general, she should be in a Burmecian prison cell for war crimes.
Vivi is the best character in the game. I definitely agree there.
I'd love to see something like this for Final Fantasy VIII, which I've played many more times, or if you really like character development... The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky.

Vivi definitely agree. My favorite character in 9 and probably across all others. A really good fleshed out character.
Eiko is definitely my favorite character because she has the funniest lines in the game, and I like that her white magic spells are actually useful (Might, Holy, etc.) compared to Garnet’s status-inflicting magic. “What a BIMBO!!”
Quina is my favorite FFIX character and I cant tell you how nervous I was to hear where you put them.
But in the end, I couldn't agree more!
I love Quina too! They are the best implementation of the Blue Mage class imo, I loved exploring the world and eating everything that was possible to see what magic I get. I also love their design and carefree personality. I wish they had more development and the Qu race featured in more games. FFTA had a good opportunity to have the Qu as one of the playable races but unfortunately wasted it.
Fun fact for some of those who didn't know, but the story that Ramuh tells Garnet is actually apart of the early game of ff2. I didn't know that when i first played 9 years ago, then played 2 on the Gba and remembered that part when i decided to replay 9. Loved the video and honestly despite the split of garnet I'm not fully against the list. I would move maybe 3 around differently. I hated the queen though. Lol

Necron or Eternal Darkness in the original Japanese is the a both a call back to the Cloud of Darkness and the Antithesis of the main theme of Life and livining to the fullest in what little time you have. Kuja is supposed to be a callback to all the previous villains of the Final Fantasy series but the main call back is to Final Fantasy III and Xande whose arc fits in with the main theme of Final Fantasy IX and hits the theme of reflection. Final Fantasy III has likely the greatest concentration of Callbacks in IX.
Edit: I should also point out that signs indicate that Hades was originally supposed to be the Final Boss, but the themes associated with Hades or other gods of the underworld in mythology don't quite fit with what the developers and writers of final fantasy IX were going for here.
Oh? Kuja always felt more like a Kefka echo. The sheer flamboyance, the being a science project, the "if I can't exist nobody can" attitude...
@@BJGvideos The end of IX is very similar to the end of III right down to the Villain's motivations. Kuja has traits of every previous villain in the franchise due to the main theme of Final Fantasy IX being Reflection. Kuja being childish and theatrical is definitely from Kefka. Traits of Sephiroth, Golbez and Emperor Mateus are readily apparent in Kuja as well.
I think I agree with your list for the most part. I think you are being unfair to Zidane. Yes, he is a womanizer. And yes, he is initially fickle in that regard. Garnet seems to capture his heart and change that about him. He also genuinely cares about his teammates.

I would gladly trade Cinna for Rubi as a fighter. Give her whips and a skill set focused around statuses and weakening/locking down high danger targets. In older FF games whips always carried a chance to stun/paralyze targets on hit, so why not carry that forward (though as a chance to slow?) and add an extra status to each whip that needs that status ability to trigger?
As a unique ability for her alone, why not one that lets her physical attacks strike the entire enemy group or one that trades off her ability to status on hit for increased power (as a support character she would deal much lower damage than usual unless you specifically built her into a pure damage role, and even then nowhere near Zidane or steiner with mp attack)

As a Freya fan and a strong supporter of the rat folk of Cleyra and Burmercia. I have an unpopular take. Beatrix, as hot as she is and as awesome of a fighter as she is, should be locked away in a Burmecian prison at the end of the game for war crimes.

Zidane was a breath of fresh air when compared to 7 and 8, nice having a non brooding amnesiac character who helped others when they didn't know they needed it.

I've been waiting for this upload! Honestly it would be nearly impossible for me to rank all these characters. I would keep moving them around. I feel like there's something interesting about all of them.
Also! I'm gonna go tinfoil here. I don't think Necron is as random as he seems. I think he's an Eidolon. After defeating Kuja, it's outright said Necron was summoned by Kuja's despair and need and the crystal disappears. (Necron also has weirdly crystal like features).
This whole game is about the cycle of life and death and identity. All life returns to the crystal so it can grow and produce more life. I think Necron is the crystal's protector and Kuja finally got what he wanted; a powerful Eidolon and the ability to destroy everything, but it was the group's will to live that won out.

Kuja and Brahne in top tier? Awesome. I got to voice BOTH of them in Final Fantasy 9 In A Nutshell by Rabtoons and it was a blast. Over the top characters who seem like they're having the time of their lives are the best.

So the deal with Necron is that it's existence as the final boss is directly tied to the major theme of the game: The value of life
Most characters in FF9 find their value in living through the course of the story, and reinforcing their will to live because of this (Vivi having the most clear instance of this).
Necron is the embodiment of nihilism, believing that life (and everything by extension) has no value or meaning, so it answers Kuja's desires to destroy everything, explicitly using Kuja as an example to "prove" that erasing everything is the answer to "bliss". So your party defeating Necron is solidifying the game's theme of the importance of finding value in life and to never lose the will to live.
Yeah, it could've been cool to have another more god-like form for Kuja to transform into for the final boss, but I think Necron still works great in context of the games' messages and themes.

You should be able to swap Amarant for Beatrix sometime during disc 3. PC Mods of the game (Alternate Fantasy in particular) allow you to do it, and for good reason. Beatrix develops WAY more than Amarant throughout the game and is just as invested in looking out for Garnet's well being as Steiner is.
4:00 - 4:20 This is a fun channel, but Tantacles is WAY off the mark with Zidane's character and how much he grows throughout the game. He is WAY more than just an outgoing version of Squall. Dude is from another planet, has no idea where his real home is for most of the game, gets hit by Baku during his childhood yet is pressured by him and the Tantalus guys to be their best guy and yeah, while he is incredibly chauvinistic, he only is that way because he is acting out. He's running from pain, he knows it, and even worse, he KNOWS that it's gonna come to a head at some point.
This is made explicitly clear during the Not Alone sequence, where Garnet has to save him from the shell dragon, asking him "is THIS how you want to solve the problem?" While he just walks away from everyone who is important to him because he thinks he's a second rate Kuja. Zidane goes from a combination of a chauvinistic high school jock and drama kid to someone who not only knows that he needs to lead others, but also leads himself.
It's what makes the Not Alone sequence so memorable: Because no matter how tough you act on the outside, when you learn the absolute truth of who you are, you WILL need to look to others for help. Zidane is kind of aware of this throughout the game, since even his philosophy of "you don't need a reason to help people" is nothing more than him acting out and running from his fears: He figures that the more he can "distract" those insecurities by hitting on princesses and helping black mage kids, the more adoration he'll acquire and that will eventually outstrip what he doesn't know about himself.
Zidane grows THE MOST during this game. Even more than Vivi, and that is saying something.

Ahh having just found the channel I love the content already. And I see the major glairing issue with most of the ones getting into the lower tiers, we see they are mainly the end game (4th disk) characters, which comes back to why IX isn't considered the best, the new generations of game systems were coming out, and this was the last FF game coming out for the PS1, but to make have it release while the PS1 was still in its life cycle they had to rush the writing and ending of the game. So many of the characters are only half finished and it shows, I just wonder what would have happened had the game had the time to fully flesh out the end of the story.
Necron is a very weird last boss. He's weird because he's very much fitting to the somewhat hidden theme the game had that goes over most peoples heads. I can't say I like it on a personal level, I don't think the game creators should of done it this way as most people wont even think that deep into the game and its many characters themes, there should have been hints left in the game, even if it was hidden as a crazy peoples nonsense. As for Gilgamesh(?) FF9 actually cemented this game/world as his origin, or place of birth etc. Its from here he starts to hop time, space and dimensions into other FF games.

Quina is my favourite character in the game, this whole game she was so unserious and it was like a free holiday. I wish they gave her an arc
I think Tetra Master gets a lot of unwarranted hate. I'm the first to admit, that yes, I wish the hexadecimal system was better refined and wasn't so RNG heavy and that an F attack can lose to a 0 or 1 defense is beyond anyone's comprehension BUT...if you put that aside, there's a lot to appreciate about what they tried to do. It's a much more involved mini-game than Triad and actually has plot relevance. I like that to get the best score, you need to have 100 unique cards, I like that you can level up cards (increase stats), I like that you can rank up cards (P/M -> X -> A). I like that the board is random for every battle, unlike a stale sudoku grid, ensuring more game variety. I like there are master phantoms and tournament players you can battle repeatedly to try and get that perfect card. I HAAAAAAAAAAATED the rules in FF8 and if you didn't get the system on your first playthru and allowed for blind and random to spread it was the death knell of the game. Also in TT, once you got the elite cards, there was no challenge anymore, just put 99's in the corner. I don't know if I've convinced anyone that has already decided they hate the game, lol, but as someone who's currently working on getting a perfect 1700 score (I'm at 1634), you HAVE to love it as much as I do!!

Everyone is going to have their own oppinion, so this isn't really to try and change yours, but I think your mischaracterized several people on your list. First, you split up Garnett between pre and post hair cut, which doesn't make any sense because she's the same character. If you want to rank people purely on looks, that all good, but since you went into their story and character traits, it is really weird to split her up. Also, her character growth from a stubborn girl who is naive about how the world really works to a queen who competently runs a kingdom and relies on other people to make up for her shortcomings should not be overlooked.
Second, and maybe more egregiously, you completely mischaracterized Zidane. Zidane could not be further from Squal in temperment and growth. The whole point of his character is to show people that anyone can help and you don't need a reason to help. Zidane comes off as a womanizer to begin with, but he never thinks less of women or believes that they are there for his own enjoyment, he sometimes makes jokes in poor taste to show his affection for people and to lighten the mood. He quickly grows out of thinking these jokes are appropriate and they never pop up again. He ends up leading a team on a world tour adventure and planet saving endeavore, and when asked why he's doing it, he hasn't even thought about it. He just realized it needed to be done and he could help, and so he did. Also, while he does have several doubts and insecurities, he uses a bright happy persona to keep other peoples spirits up even when he himself is in doubt. It's not until he learns that he's literally a weapon made to kill all the people he loves that he finally cracks under the pressure, and it only takes a short while for him to recover.

I only remember the names of Zidane's race (genomes) because there was a lot of talk in the news around that time.
For context (and I did study some of this at uni) a genome is essentially the entire genetic data contained in the organism or cell of a multicellular organism. (For context, humans have nucleic DNA, but we also have mitochondrial DNA). I kind of latched onto this idea because it sounded cool and I was really into human biology as a kid. It kind of makes sense and also sounds a bit dumb, but it works in this case.
'cause like..... technically everyone is/has a genome. lol

I don't really mind the character placement of Freya even though she is top tier, but trying to say she is a worse version of Beatrix is really misrepresenting her character. Beatrix is actually the worst character in FFIX to me (she's incredibly poorly written and is a complete Mary Sue), but I won't really rant about that here even though I could dissect her and point out so many problems with her characterisation. But I don't really see how Freya and Beatrix are similar beyond the superficial similarity of being lady knights. Beatrix essentially has a worse version of Steiner's character arc, the whole thing about learning not to blindly follow an obviously immoral leader and to develop your own sense of justice.
Freya actually is a foil to both Steiner and Beatrix in that she is already at that point when she first shows up. She's a knight who left her homeland on a personal quest, but is exiled for doing so, preventing her from returning to the home she loves as much as Fratley. This, in combination with her friendship with Zidane that she formed over a course of a year before the events of the game, means Freya has a really unique perspective compared to Steiner and Beatrix as a knight. She actually lives in the real world and can understand the perspectives of the common civilian, meaning from when we first meet her, she isn't a knight who fights for an ideal or a figurehead, but fights for the people.
Beyond that, Freya deals with an incredible amount of loss over the course of the game, ironically much of it having Beatrix involved. Beatrix does not go through any comparable amount of despair to Freya, and what problems she does face, she doesn't have much resolve to deal with them in the same way Freya does. It takes Freya shouting at Beatrix for Beatrix to come to the decision that "maybe my genocidal queen is bad and should be stopped, actually", lol.
If you prefer Beatrix for "other" reasons that's fine but it's really weird to say Freya is a "worse Beatrix" when their characterisation and arcs are completely different.

@@AlyssaMcNeil A similar character from FF6. People tend to forgive him because he's kind to the main character in one scene and tells a worse villain to back off, but he was still loyal to the bad guys and had participated in their warmongering.
I like the theory that Ruby is a cross dresser. It was common in the past for theater troups to consist of males only and men playing female roles.
After reading a bit into it, I personally don't believe it's Canon but definitely headcanon for me.

I don't agree with the opinion about Zidane. He is literally the second protagonist of the saga who is not presented to you with the characteristic of "melancholic" (The first 3 are stones, Cecil is ashamed of his actions, Terra is very confused and distraught, Cloud is edgy with identity issues that at this point I don't remember if they tell you in the original game, Squall is more edgy but with better writing . Bartz is the only exception because he's a bit dumb). He is charismatic and is always willing to be there for anyone in the group, a detail they have with Zidane when he is the one who needs support. Probably the best leader in the main saga.
I pretty much agree with the list except for a few of the main. Freya and amarant should be in the second to last tier. They are terrible and completely forgettable characters. Also, I think Vivi is heavily overrated. If this game had voice acting, I think people would compare him to Hope. He’s not great

Man I think you looked at this whole story through an extremely narrow lense. So many of your characters you deemed "not important" or "boring" or "we don't need anymore of those" is a complete shock to me. Like zidane???? Really? Zidane famous words. "You don't need a reason to help people" is someone we don't need? Brother what? Yeah he was perry at times but the game literally had ONE song. A song that was meant for one time in the game. When Zidane became sad. He was the driving force of positivity in the whole game and he did nothing but help anyone....
Plus the moral of the story is to nit he alone and Zidane relies on all the characters and they work together. Right over your head. Idk if your just being an edgelord or not lmao I really can't tell

not a bad tierlist but imo i would put Freya crescent into marry me tier,shes my favorite final fantasy character of all time,her backstory and soul crushing journey is what made me fall in love with her,freya deserves better and honestly yes fratley is just a bit lackluster,if he had a bit more backstory them maybe he would be good,other than that i love freya and she deserves marry me tier but that's just my opinion
