The scratches on the black one made me nauseous. I would be furious if I dropped $$$ and got that. I usually buy used or "scratch and dent" because that's my budget. I would expect minor scratches on used but not factory new. I love all my Gibsons. It's disappointing to see those finish blemishes.
i agree 100%, but for some reason gibson wont address the finish issue...been that way for years now. better finish on most low end ($500 - $600) guitars yet for some reason we pay big bucks for the name and shit for quality.....
I really don't get Gibson. Literally no other company has the type of QC issues they do and yet they are among the most expensive guitars on the market. It's literally just a name you are paying for at this point. Any overseas guitar dominates them now in terms of QC. So frustrating. What the hell are they doing other than milking boomers? Fix your process Gibson.
I have 2 knock off les Paul's and im not a gibson guy at all. One of them i took a grinder with a sanding disk and comfort carved the top and back and i love that guitar now. The other one has a fonky neck shape that i just keep hung on a wall for decor.
I’m coming at this with curiosity, do you think that Gibsons have more finish checking / happens more frequently because of the nitro finish? I know the poly that Epiphone uses is definitely a pretty hard lacquer
@@drkbrhds at this point I would have bought a Epiphone over a Gibson and for a slightly lower price you can get the same instrument as a Gibson in often a better quality.
Out of curiosity, I did some quick research regarding the price. Apparently the original Les Paul Junior sold for $99.50 back in 1954; adjusted for inflation, that's about $1,100 in 2023. Gibson wants literally double that for this guitar. It's absolute insanity, especially when you can get the Epiphone version of that gold top (the better guitar imo) for like $500.
Juniors and Specials are thinner since they don’t have the belly from the carved top. I’m honestly shocked Gibson didn’t just make a pink version of the standard Les Paul case, and actually DID make it for the thin body models.
Billies silver he uses was originally a black one that got painted. They only painted the body and left the neck black. That’s kind of interesting. I see with the signature series they painted the neck to match
@Wrench Head Oh I paid $2799 for a Les Paul Standard 60's in Unburst and $1799 for an SG Standard. I would never pay that much for that particular model. Besides not being a fan of the artist or that model, I'm not a fan of P90 pickups. I'm a humbucker fan lol.
I’m so glad you pointed out that the pickup is dynamic. That’s what I really don’t like about hum canceling p-90s is that they aren’t as dynamic as traditional p-90s and that’s what I love most about p-90’s. I hope Gibson offers them separately at some point. Right now I have an Epiphone Billie Joe signature with a Mojo Tone quite coil that I put in it. It’s not him canceling, but it’s much quieter than most P-90’s and it’s got the dynamics that I desire. I wouldn’t want to get the Gibson version because I prefer the chunkier neck, and I’m not as big of a fan of the finishes. I was hoping it was going to be an actual silver “sparkle” rather than a “mist”
I hope Epiphone makes one in that silver finish. Don't know why but it just speaks to me. I'm not collector nor am I a vintage guitar guy but that would be a fun player to have in my guitarmory. Plus I need something other than my normal metal machines to play 👍
Pisses me off that a company like Gibson just forget about left handed players! Good job Harley Benton do a lp jr! I'd buy the Gibson right now but no lefty's available
The classic Gibson “Mudbucker” bass pickup is also a sidewinder design. And while that coil design does affect the tone, a lot of the EB-0 sound comes just from putting a bass pickup right at the neck position. Gibson should’ve done sidewinder P-90’s all the way back then, too!
2.2K for what amounts to the barest of bare bones Gibsons there is? Seriously? 2.2K for a guitar that doesn't even have a intonatable bridge? This has to be the new high in terms of dressing in the emperor's new clothes.
Great review. I just ordered a P90DC to go in my 2015 Junior (because slug P90….yuck) and the original Gibson P90s have been backordered for weeks now. I’d love to have one of the BJAs like that silver one, but things be how they be and money is tight. Great job showing off the pickup capabilities though. It definitely made my mind up to cancel my other traditional P90 order and go for the DC.
Really though you find guitars with 1 pickup and no switch are usually a lot more responsive. Even more so when there's no tone and just a volume. The more resistance you remove form the circuit the more direct everything behaves.
Baffling why Gibson just doesn’t make a satin white Jr with wrap around tail piece, classic joint tuners, and a simple antiquity P90 It would be cheaper to make and would actually match Billie’s juniors
Sorry to see the issues with your Vintage Ebony Junior. :( I really love the look and feel of the one I got. I’m not the best at messing with the volume and tone, so I’m digging the way the pickup sounds. And loved hearing it on your vid.
I bought one and sent it back. A few QC issues and the case is flimsy. Tuners not installed properly, finish peeling and what looked to be an extra hole was drilled and filled for the output. For the price I’d expect it to be in better condition. Seemed silly to play that much for a Junior if it’s not in collectors grade condition from the factory. Or that much for a Junior to be a gigging guitar. Cool looking but at $2300 it didn’t ring my bells. My 2005 Junior was cheap and sounds better too.
With regards to the poor finish on the gloss black version? If you’re paying that much for a signature Gibson then it better be good. I have a gloss black PRS Mark Tremonti Standard single cut. It’s made n Indonesia, costs a fraction of the price and the fit and finish is almost flawless. Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘
That case looks like it should say pepto bismol on the outside instead of Gibson. Your paying that premium for the extra tone screw. I'd say if you were to have bought the guitar from a dealer like C&M the chip on the headstock would likely be them. And then even knowing of the chip they wouldn't discount for damage.

Man, that color reminds me of the “Silver Pearl” Gibson LP Studio (Lefty) I just bought off Reverb not long ago. It appears to literally be the same shade of silver, also without grain filler. Nice color!
The Sidewinder in single mode (coil splitted) is my best tone. Unfortunately and by any reasosn they have decided not to include it in this occasion. Having both tones in my 2014 Les Paul Futura is a pleasure. Well seasoned with a good overdrive and you go to heaven. As a curiosity, it is in the neck, but the pole spacing is clearly for bridge (52 mm).
I don't know where you can buy this exact P-90 sidewinder, but Lace Sensor has had a sidewinder P-90 for quite a few years, you could look for one of those.

The pickup is brighter than a P90. It's more like a Firebird pickup, which unironically is *also* a small humbucker...just like the P90H.
The Billy Joe Armstrong jr. Signature sidewinder p-90 sounded shrill, yet the Greenday stuff Austin played was right in its tonal ballpark…8)
Sidewinder technology - so this is how they built the original Firebird pickups in 1963. It’s a Junior with a Firebird pickup!
That explains the lack of p90 sound…
