Rexburg Lt. Hermosillo & Madison Prosecutor Wood discuss Daybell case in first in-depth interview

REXBURG -- It started with a phone call from police in Arizona about a Jeep possibly tied to a homicide.
Rexburg Police Lt. Ray Hermosillo was assigned to check it out and had no idea how much that call would change his life over the next four years.
From two missing children, dead spouses, insurance fraud, extreme religious beliefs and a complicated series of events spanning multiple states, Hermosillo became the lead Rexburg detective in the Daybell case. He sat in the courtroom every day during Lori Vallow Daybell's trial in the spring of 2023 and testified three times during Chad Daybell's trial this year.
Hermosillo worked closely with Madison County Prosecuting Attorney Rob Wood who initiated legal proceedings against the couple and helped convene a grand jury which led to multiple murder charges being filed against Chad and Lori Daybell. Both were convicted on all counts by two separate juries. Chad Daybell is facing the death penalty and Lori Vallow Daybell is serving three life sentences without the possibly of parole.
For the first time, Hermosillo and Wood sat down with EastIdahoNews.com for their first in-depth interview about the case. They shared details about the investigation that have never been reported before along with what they've learned, the challenges of the case, how it's changed them and how multiple law enforcement agencies came together in the pursuit of justice for Joshua "JJ" Vallow, Tylee Ryan and Tammy Daybell.

I guess, when you think about it, if any of them had any emotion they wouldn’t have been able to kill the kids in the first place. It’s just something that normal people can’t wrap their head around. They may have done this under the guise of some religious belief but they were just evil, plain and simple. They were getting rid of anyone that could possibly be an obstacle to them obtaining their own evil and selfish desires.

What makes this a great interview is the mutual respect. All 3 have been involved since the beginning and understand the intricacies of the case. I don’t waste my time on interviews where the journalists know nothing of the case and their questions are pointless and a waste of time. Great job Nate.

It was very powerful when Hermosillo said he would do it again 4 times to get justice for the kids and Tammy. Also Wood and Hermosillo when he had the moment when he got emotional and choked up. These two men are wonderful representatives of the police and law. Nate you are an equally wonderful representative of the media. All 3 of you are very fine honorable men. Nate is a fine reporter. He gives facts. More reporters are needed like him. He is a class act. Mr. Woods and Lt. Hermosillo(sp) are the best of law enforcement.

I've been captivated by this case for the last couple of years and I am in awe of their professionalism and dedication! It's interesting hearing their perspectives on this case. The fact that Alex made Lt Hermosillo nervous says alot. The man is a brick wall! Nate it was an exceptional interview for all of us who have spent so much time on the case only watching. They have put thousands of man hours .Its such a huge case that came to trial and saw a verdict i trust it can happen only in places with such dedication and they used all the process to get justice. The only mission is to get justice.
These two men are real heroes. I don’t know what I thought, but I never thought they would actually get the body’s. I thought there was a different team of people. I never imagined they would dig out the bodies. That’s horrible. I’m so sorry.

It sucks that he was afraid, I mean he had good reason to be! But, at the same time, Chad and Lori calling him "dark" and "son of Cain"proves he was, and is an excellent Detective! I think Chad was scared of him. It would somewhat explain Emma's and Joe's ludicrous police harassment testimony.
I think its because he was the one related to Chad's sister in law, Heather Daybell .

Pretty much boredom, anger, and the occasional bout of excitement. But I have zero doubt that he brainwashed the kids into believing that the detectives set him up 🤦🏻♀️

Brilliant interview, Nate! These men still get emotional talking about finding the kids and Chad didn’t blink an eye in court when all of this evidence was being talked about and the pictures that were shown of the remains. I am glad to hear that Lori and Chad are not able to talk anymore. But I'm afraid that there are still Chad followers out there. Melanie P is dangerous in my opinion. She was definitely involved in the shooting of Brandon and was totally ok with her kids being deemed dark. If Chad and Lori was not caught, there would have been more deaths for sure

I feel this interview should be on every journalism and media course as required viewing-for the range of techniques employed and craftsmanship that made this so fascinating to watch. Walking these two key figures through the entire case (four years of it!) made for powerful viewing because of the quality of your open-ended questions, the camaraderie between yourself and your two subjects, the careful and respectful editing and the absence of ego. This was investigative journalism at its finest, absent of the cult of personality that is always part of the mainstream and RUclips media culture. This free-wheeling and wide-ranging interview not only gave us a deeper understanding of the cooperation between all the agencies who worked on the case but humanised their efforts, gave us insights into their processes and brought home the challenges they faced and the toll this case took. I particularly loved your question towards the end of the interview where you asked them what questions/s you hadn’t but should have asked (paraphrasing here). I’m so glad that that moment didn’t end up on the proverbial editing floor. You’ve been a key figure yourself in this case, and I look forward to someone interviewing you about your experience and journey through the 4 years it took to secure justice for the victims in this case.

I can always count on Nate to ask the hard questions that lots of other journalists will shy away from, and I so appreciate it because I know these aren't easy topics to address (like the smell, what they did when they learned the children were in fact buried back there). But these are things many of us really want to know. Even though it is a very public case, lots of us feel a very personal connection to it.

Four and half years later and it still breaks their heart remembering what happened. Massive respect. The sheer mountain of investigative work that went on is so clearly seen.
