"What is calculus?" is a question many calculus students never learn the answer to!
Understanding what calculus is before you start learning how to use it will give you a better context for the whole course.
Calculus is the mathematical study of change, in the same way that geometry is the mathematical study of shape, or that trigonometry is the mathematical study of triangles.
Derivatives and integrals are the major concepts you'll learn in calculus. Derivatives allow you to find slope (rise over run), and integrals allow you to find area.

Hi, I’m Krista! I make math courses to keep you from banging your head against the wall. ;)
Math class was always so frustrating for me. I’d go to a class, spend hours on homework, and three days later have an “Ah-ha!” moment about how the problems worked that could have slashed my homework time in half. I’d think, “WHY didn’t my teacher just tell me this in the first place?!”
So I started tutoring to keep other people out of the same aggravating, time-sucking cycle. Since then, I’ve recorded tons of videos and written out cheat-sheet style notes and formula sheets to help every math student-from basic middle school classes to advanced college calculus-figure out what’s going on, understand the important concepts, and pass their classes, once and for all. How amazing, I passed my engineering calculus exam without knowing what the hell am I studying...
lucifer t.m.s exactly is the case with me too.i completed master degree in physics, but i don't know what i studied.i studied quantum mechanics in physics but haven't understood anything.
Typical, a lazy engineer.
@@sandeep2435 I am taking Electricity and Magnetism, just second semester physics, I want to die
Me: allow me to introduce myself.
I'm still getting use to the new channel page as well. My understanding is that video autoplays for non subscribers. Have you subscribed?! :) Either way, I'll continue to look to improve my channel page. Thanks for the feedback!
I failed Calc 1 three times.. had to transfer to a different community college to finish it.. then through hard work passed Calc 2 and 3. It took me over three year to complete calculus. I hope to whoever is reading this can get some type of motivation from my story and realize that if you try hard enough and put your mind to it you can accomplish anything including passing calculus. ( Krista's videos help also lol )
I love that all of us (and others) are posting this content online. I learn so much from RUclips, and it's awesome that we can all share our knowledge here with each other!! :D
i went to a workshop at creativeLIVE this week, and we had to make a video in the studio. that's James Wedmore helping me with the apple and talking to me off camera. i've made every other video by myself, but this one was really fun!! :D
I don't need coffee anymore, in the morning. Wake up to your energy, and bam!: "ON".
Right back at ya Sheila! I was lucky enough to be in the live audience and be forcibly SHOVED off the cliff :), but I'm totally inspired by how you've taken action at home... it's awesome!! Let's stay in touch and hopefully we can help encourage each other to keep it up!! :D
Your enthusiam when talking about calculus is over 9000! I love it. *was studying for a calculus exam but now watching all of your videos*
:D
I think most people feel the same way when they take it! Thank you so much for watching and for commenting and supporting me! I felt so lucky to have won! :D
lol this video makes me happy... if/when i need to learn calculous I'll be back
Anyways, I have been teaching Calculus for about 4 years now and I am always willing and excited to help.
WOW! Thank you SO much, Krista! I had done a handful of other videos in the past but only one that was on-camera. I'd been procrastinating like crazy, but was so inspired by seeing you all take massive action in such a short time. Your enthusiasm is so encouraging!
Calculus is a new way of thinking about MATH... As a math Major with an emphasis in Statistics, It is a whole way of thinking. It is a whole new concept.
I'm glad I finally know what calculus is...probably would have been good to know this when I actually took Calculus. GRT VID!!
I'm doing very well in my calc classes because of you!! you are so precious!
Omg, i can't thank you enough for this wonderful ebook. This ebook is probably the greatest gift i have ever received to help me with calculus. I mean its not just all words and equations, but there are also video links to further help out. People like you are the reason why people like me (students) have some motivation to learn calcoolus.
NoA Naga Thanks for the feedback! I'm so glad you like it!
You were such a big help in my first year at uni. Love your work!
+Aiden Gonzallez Thank you so much, I'm glad the videos helped!
SHEILA oh my gosh, your video is GREAT, I am completely blown away!!! You had the attention grabber and the intro buffer and even the outtakes at the end, hilarious!! You did such a great job with your jump cuts, and for your FIRST video, I mean... honestly lady!! :D You are the best example of being brave, getting in front of the camera, doing the editing, and having fun with it. Congratulations, you are amazing! Keep it up!! I, for one, will be following LittleDogDaily for sure!! :D
Love your energy and humor, Krista!
Hi Michael, I'm sorry for the confusion! :( The ebook is free, you just have to enter 0 in the box for price. If you enter 0, the system won't prompt you for credit card information. Thank you for your comment though; I updated the wording on the download page to make it more clear. :) I really hope that helps! :)
They are definitely important, but if you don't have them all memorized, you'll still be okay, so don't worry too much! I think the ones I would pay most attention to are double and half angle formulas, which you'll use to simplify integrals, basic trig functions and their relationships to each other, which you'll use in limits, derivatives and integrals, and pythagorean theorem, which you'll probably use in applications of derivatives. :)
Thanks! downloaded the ebook and finally a video that explains calc so well
ive been in calculus for a bit this semester in college and always wondered what it truly is. Prof. didn't say the actual definition, thanks I appreciate it!
I wish I could tell you more, but I can't really say... I never looked for a job in Psychology. When I got out of school I started working in marketing and then I did staffing and then I did IT. Now I'm just doing integralCALC! My understanding is that you can't do much with a psychology degree unless you have a masters or a phd. :/
Honestly, all of your videos helped me pass Calc 1 and 2. Thank you so much!!!
You're welcome, I'm so glad the videos helped!
Hey!! What's up fellow calculus nerd! :) I'm going to make sure I create some videos for those of us who are calculus fans, and not JUST the haters!! :D
Ohhhh YOU were the standing ovation, lol!! That made me feel so good! Thank you so much for supporting me and commenting and liking!! I hope we can keep in touch and yes, maybe collaborate someday!! :)
Wish i had a teacher like you, when i needed to understand the basics of calculus before i became a lousy engineer.
you're the reason why i'm so good at calculus + why i'm so intrested in maths so ..... thankyou
I've been learning quantum mechanics and general relativity and I'm at the point where I NEED to understand the mathematics behind it all in more depth! Your videos are very helpful, thank you!
electrocat1 quantum physics ftw!
spooky action at a distance
Yeah spooky action at a distance!
electrocat1 spooky AF
+electrocat1
What level of math do you need for modern physics? What would you recommend for those of us who are interested? Oh and the spooky action at a distance has recently been shown to violate local realism, bell inequalities with NO LOOP HOLES! What a time to be alive.
As long as you have the skills for another job, I don't think the matching degree is particularly important. I'm sure you'll be able to find something! :)
I’m an engineering student now and I look back and wonder how I ever hated calculus, it makes things so much simpler if you know how to use it
Apparently Archimedes discovered calculus, but it got rediscovered a number of times. But go Leibniz - he did good work. I'm starting to read Whitehead and Russell's Principia Mathematica because of cryrpto-anarchy, cryptography, computers, and Alan Turing's epic adventures.
Leibnitz created the universal notation that everyone uses today.
Archimedes did not create Calculus. . Leibniz and Newton are responsible for the basis of the Calculus as known today. I do remember that Archimedes has aquired some impressiv results WITHOUT Calculus (and that's what makes his achievements so impressive. He was able to develop a formula to calculate the area under a parabola and prove it! But that he did by diferent means, he didn't know Calculus and the fact that the same result can be today easily obtained with Integrals is only a proof that he was right.
Thanks Krista best teacher on line
I didn't intend to put them in a ranked order, I just wanted to mention a few applicable fields! :)
"or even an astrophysicist"
well this is out of my league
*packs bags and leaves*
I have taken her classes. She knows what she is talking about bigtime.
Awww, thanks Kenneth! I've loved having you in the courses! :D
hot math teacher *drooling
Calculus is the language of STEM. As a 50+ year old practicing physicist I use calculus every day. Thank you for promoting this beautifully powerful part of math.
Thank you John, I'm honored to do my part! :)
Great energy! An you DID make wanting (or having) to know Calculus look like it could be (somewhat) fun. Thanks!
I love this video especially. It really helped
Thanks so much.
Indeed thanks for the ebook and your channel.
wow i understand it completely once you said that its the study of change but unsure if i do never done calculus
I have never been to excited to learn about math! This actually helped!
You can explain this dry science in a cool way, you are smart and talented
Maybe it'd be "a durian a day keeps the doctor away!" :)
Hi 👋🏽 are you okay?
do you have adobe reader on your computer?
Whoa hang on! We can't blame Leibniz and Newton for calculus, (not that we need to "blame" anyone for it, I love maths), because they were moreso responsible for differential calc which wasn't discovered until about 600 years after integral calc. We gotta be sending love to them all, they bought us the beauty of calc and mathematics in general.
YES! Glad you thought so... I worked hard to try to fix it so that it sounded good! :D
Thanks! Glad you like them! :)
Hello, my name's Francis, I''m from brazil and I'm studying Atmospheric Sciences, I'mm so glad about your class here, I can understand calculus here better than in my college, you is the best teacher I have, thank's a lot
Yes! A LOT of energy in this video!! It was really fun making it!! :D
Good pep-talk! I strongly believe mastering calculus or math in general have great benefits, as they provide means to obtain answers... and clearly a competitive advantage.
Ev, WOW! I'm completely honored, thank you!! I'm so happy to know that my videos are helping you a little bit to succeed at such a high level!! Good for you for going back to school and working so hard to do something you've always wanted to do! Keep on being awesome!! :D
you know you procrastinated studying in calc when you hear her talk about derivatives and integrals, and you're like ah that's correct but wouldn't have a clue before watching this.
Thanks lady
Calculus reveals the beauty of everything
it's pretty incredible, isn't it?!! :)
I hope so! Good luck with your honors class!! :D
You did a phenomenal job on your video! I hate math but I enjoyed watching your video. Great energy and humor!
hey, i'm so glad you like my videos and that they've helped you! i'm sorry i can't really help with physics, but good luck in your class! :D
Most people on RUclips do comedy or music to get famous , but you teach calc and its just fascinating !! Although its my first year year in calc but I do enjoy it . We really appreciate your work on these videos . Plain and easy to understand , plus u r awesome . Again thank you so much :) u r a life savor
Thanks for your video. Does calculus tie into the idea that a particle/wave's direction of travel and position can't be known at the same moment?
It was great seeing you guys film this live at CL. Its fast paced, quirky, and really funny. You should totally make a new version of this video.
Thanks! It was a lot of fun. :)
Always wondered what calculus is. Thanks for making your videos!
your definition of calculus is really a subset of a calculus
calculus is the study of limits (for functions, sequences, etc.) and constructs built on limitting processes
Awwww! You are sooo sweet! Thank you so much for supporting me!! :)
Thank you Sue! Hopefully it'll be only good things to come from here on out!! :D
i think they are equally useful, but i personally think integrals are way more fun!! :D
BEST questions ever about gravity: "So why did sir Isaac Neutron shoot that apple off that geysers head"
"So why did he worry about an apple falling down? ... didn't he have better things to worry about?"
- Ali G (My hero)
Quirky and engaging, you'd be an awesome teacher, if you aren't already..Good video!
+L Kururugi (The Apex Truthseeker 荣誉) Thanks!
Thanks Timar!! You have been so supportive throughout the whole workshop! ;)
I'm trying to get a bit of an early insight before I start University next year (Computer Science Major).
I've purchased a few books on the subject, but I sometimes find myself lacking the motivation to continue on with my early studies; although, I have to say that you're definitely keeping me motivated with your cool videos!
Keep it up.
Krista, your videos are both educational and inspiring. I am 28 and made the big decision a couple years ago to return to college and pursue my dream of attaining a PhD in Psycholinguistics. It is because of individuals such as yourself that tirelessly make available quality information that I am now a straight A student. Keep up the amazing work and know that it is deeply appreciated.
That's really COOLLLL!!! Nicely done - unique way of explaining things - the opposite of boring ;-) THANKS!
Sorry. Differential calculus is finding each and every INDIVIDUAL component of a Whole which can be represented mathematically.
What is an individual component you might ask? It is a component which is dx (not Dx) wide. Of course its height can vary. (Even the second and third differentials or components are dx wide but their height is progressively one order of magnitude less)
Typically the individual component is called dy or differential (if it is the first in a series).
Integral calculus is just the reverse i.e integrating or putting together the components. IOW getting the Y from integrating the dy(s). The Y could be an area or any other "whole" or integral depending on what the individual components or dy represents.
Now what is dx, you might ask? It is 1/N where N is an IMMENSELY large number which is not infinity.
wow! can't believe you made it that far without completing knowing! you must be super smart!! :)
She reminds me of my calculus instructor as an undergraduate, cute and nerdy. That was a long time ago.
Yes!! This was so good and so exciting!!
I was the guy who gave you the standing ovation! :D
I don't do calc, but i would like to collaborate with you one day!
Hey, I really like your enthusiasm about teaching calculus. its like adding more cheerful colors to a pic for ppl to enjoy it. absolutely love what you are doing :)
I wonder how calculus was done during the 1600's? I think during that time period, calculus was a useful tool, but I don't think it was never formalized and proved rigorously. I think people that used calculus didn't know what was the meaning of a limit to converge, or perhaps what is something that converges. All that hard work to improve calculus is quite remarkable.
WOW, thank you so much!!! LOVED this creativeLIVE workshop! They continue to produce amazing content, and James Wedmore was incredible! So fortunate to have been a part of this event in person!! :)
Love this video. My favorite for todays creative live videos. I especially appreciate the 720P quality. Calculus was a difficult class. Seemed like I was always 2 weeks behind the class on understanding the concepts.
awesome! if you do ever need to learn it, make sure you send me a message to say hi and let me know!! :D
hi, i have just downloaded your calc1 ebook, since i dont have problems in math but want to read some other explanations about subjects im asking you, will you make ebooks for higher 'grade' calc classes? 3 or so?
after few hours of study i was kind of sleepy but during watching you I am fresh again
so much fun
thx a lot
:D
***** That was just completely unnecessary and cruel. I wonder what you look like? I reckon she's pretty.
I have a choice between Statistics and Calculus next semester. I will go with statistics
I'm just happy I can help! :)
I'm convinced I'm a psycopath because I'm pretty sure I don't need to learn this, but I'm doing it anyway. From scratch. From literally starting at the pre-algebra classes on Udemy.
WHY AM I LIKE THIS?!
It'll be more fun than you think! I'm glad you're getting started! :D
The fundamental theorem of calculus was probably the first concept i actually understood in calc 1 haha. Dont scare away our future fellow calc studiers
RIGHT?!! LOL, thanks Wayne!! I'm so pumped for what's to come!! :D
thank you ma'am to provide all videos lectures👍👌😀
my 15 year old daughter watched this during CreativeLIVE and subscribed to your channel! Well done...
Glad you like them! :D
That's so cool! Let me know when you get your video directory done... I'd love to see it!! :D
which is more useful? integral or differential. which is more fun?
I don't plan on it!! Good luck with your degree!! :D
I'm a business major, and we are required to take a calculus class. I'm hoping your ebook and videos will help me.
+Joey Carlyle They should definitely help!
I got overjoyed when you said astrophysics. That's what I'm striving to try to become.
Seriously, please don’t ever take down your website I need it for my maths degree :D
Thanks! I've already got some videos on differential equations, hopefully they will help get you off to a good start!! :)
