"What is calculus?" is a question many calculus students never learn the answer to!
Understanding what calculus is before you start learning how to use it will give you a better context for the whole course.
Calculus is the mathematical study of change, in the same way that geometry is the mathematical study of shape, or that trigonometry is the mathematical study of triangles.
Derivatives and integrals are the major concepts you'll learn in calculus. Derivatives allow you to find slope (rise over run), and integrals allow you to find area.

Hi, I’m Krista! I make math courses to keep you from banging your head against the wall. ;)
Math class was always so frustrating for me. I’d go to a class, spend hours on homework, and three days later have an “Ah-ha!” moment about how the problems worked that could have slashed my homework time in half. I’d think, “WHY didn’t my teacher just tell me this in the first place?!”
So I started tutoring to keep other people out of the same aggravating, time-sucking cycle. Since then, I’ve recorded tons of videos and written out cheat-sheet style notes and formula sheets to help every math student-from basic middle school classes to advanced college calculus-figure out what’s going on, understand the important concepts, and pass their classes, once and for all. I failed Calc 1 three times.. had to transfer to a different community college to finish it.. then through hard work passed Calc 2 and 3. It took me over three year to complete calculus. I hope to whoever is reading this can get some type of motivation from my story and realize that if you try hard enough and put your mind to it you can accomplish anything including passing calculus. ( Krista's videos help also lol )

They are definitely important, but if you don't have them all memorized, you'll still be okay, so don't worry too much! I think the ones I would pay most attention to are double and half angle formulas, which you'll use to simplify integrals, basic trig functions and their relationships to each other, which you'll use in limits, derivatives and integrals, and pythagorean theorem, which you'll probably use in applications of derivatives. :)

Apparently Archimedes discovered calculus, but it got rediscovered a number of times. But go Leibniz - he did good work. I'm starting to read Whitehead and Russell's Principia Mathematica because of cryrpto-anarchy, cryptography, computers, and Alan Turing's epic adventures.

Archimedes did not create Calculus. . Leibniz and Newton are responsible for the basis of the Calculus as known today. I do remember that Archimedes has aquired some impressiv results WITHOUT Calculus (and that's what makes his achievements so impressive. He was able to develop a formula to calculate the area under a parabola and prove it! But that he did by diferent means, he didn't know Calculus and the fact that the same result can be today easily obtained with Integrals is only a proof that he was right.

Whoa hang on! We can't blame Leibniz and Newton for calculus, (not that we need to "blame" anyone for it, I love maths), because they were moreso responsible for differential calc which wasn't discovered until about 600 years after integral calc. We gotta be sending love to them all, they bought us the beauty of calc and mathematics in general.

  • @qualquan

Sorry. Differential calculus is finding each and every INDIVIDUAL component of a Whole which can be represented mathematically.
What is an individual component you might ask? It is a component which is dx (not Dx) wide. Of course its height can vary. (Even the second and third differentials or components are dx wide but their height is progressively one order of magnitude less)
Typically the individual component is called dy or differential (if it is the first in a series).
Integral calculus is just the reverse i.e integrating or putting together the components. IOW getting the Y from integrating the dy(s). The Y could be an area or any other "whole" or integral depending on what the individual components or dy represents.
Now what is dx, you might ask? It is 1/N where N is an IMMENSELY large number which is not infinity.

I wonder how calculus was done during the 1600's? I think during that time period, calculus was a useful tool, but I don't think it was never formalized and proved rigorously. I think people that used calculus didn't know what was the meaning of a limit to converge, or perhaps what is something that converges. All that hard work to improve calculus is quite remarkable.
