    I like SamDoesArts but I confess I don’t understand why his account is SO popular. I think it’s because it’s simplified & high-contrast so it translates easily on Instagram/ mobile/ small screens. I enjoy more complex work like WLOP & the MTG artists like Clint Cearley, etc., & that cannot be fully appreciate on social media except maybe art station (which we’re all migrating away from).
    When people tell me they want to be an IG artist I suggest they study Sam & Loish ofc

      I completely agree, I've talked with other fellow artists and some are very reluctant, like "I just like Sam so much, he is the only one that inspires me." ....but honestly, sometimes it's a game of clout. Similar art style to someone already famous, gets them traction, especially if they get a lot of "Oh my God, I thought this was made by XYZ." Which to me after a while is not a compliment anymore, that means they are not their own person.

    • @KoongYe

      The fastest way an artist grow is by copying arts they like. So I don't see how one can "not like" copying one's art style. It's literally part of growing up. Just like how toddlers copy their parents as they grow up. Copying art style one to one doesn't exist. It's literally impossible.

    Personally I'm not a fan of Sam's art, but it's great to see so many of these artists, initially copying Sam, begin to develop their own unique styles. Fundamentals is always more important than stylization, I'm glad artists are beginning to realize that.

    Some people get too caught up in the idea that their artstyle needs to be unique and that it's bad to draw the same way as someone else. You should draw in whatever styles you enjoy. Over time, people's styles can develop into something new, but if an artist comes back to a particular style over and over because they like it, that's fine too.

    You're actually praising them and giving tips to people that use 'Samdoesart' as their art parents. Whew, thank God. Please do not bring back the 'ZOMGyoustolemypose,colourpalette,style!11' that plagued DA. People seem to forget people didn't just get good over night. They got inspired by an artist they liked and they /shock horror/ *copied* from them. It's nice to see artists actually being not only transparent about this, but encouraging it. There is a difference in 'stealing to learn' and 'stealing to plagiarise'. One is a natural part of learning and basis for most creative endeavours, the other; the artistic equivalent of stolen valour. Not only are you duping your audience about your abilities, you're also depriving yourself of learning and finding out your own artist path. Wish I saw this as a teen, but hey.

  • @juula9469
    @juula9469 9 месяцев назад +61

    for anyone who get how artists become as good with their skill, knows how many hours we spend studying our idols (artists with an artstyle we admire).
    We credit them, we want to learn from them and become an artist of our own. It is called study, not copy (unless you pretend to be them, then it is plagiarism, and can be takem to court).
    I have even seen a study or "copy" as some would call of a van gogh portrait, hanging in a museum, done by someone from that timw who admired van goghs art wheb he still was unknown and alive.
    It was mentioned "study of Van goghs self portrait by ___"
    The use of studies to improve your art has been a technique used by painters and artists for hundreds of years, so stop shunning people, especially young artists whose confidence can be shattered by the toxic masses on the internet.
    For those who pretend to be the artist themself, no mercy though.

    It looks like several of these artists talk about tutorials in patreon- I myself do this with the artists I admire that offer this. Studies help artists step in the other artist's shoes and then later they can distill down how they want to incorporate ideas/skills into their own work. I love many artists on here, including Sam. I do animals and landscapes in traditional mediums, but I still learn so much from so many about color, light, personality, etc.

    I'll just add on to what you've already said beautifully! I believe that there are some improvements that be taken from copying an artist's style but you may also copy the mistakes they make that may not be quite obvious to you so Trying moving on and study other artists too, be your own unique artists just like how everyone voice is different, that's how everyone's art is

    multiple people copying an artists artstyle is what creates a new "genre" or whatever. Copying the style is fine, because that lets it grow it's own branches, because everybody will still draw a little bit differently from eachother. Copying the art itself is something else though.

    Honestly all art styles are inspired by other artists. Everyone's is always evolving, but if you take and drawing that's not yours and claim it as your own that's not right. But to take inspiration isn't bad and I feel, it doesn't always have to be credited all the time. There is no first time art style or certain way of doing art. It's all just a big circle and is ever evolving.

  • @viviennart
    @viviennart 10 месяцев назад +30

    I don't like to see whole art styles copied. I follow an artist and once I stumbled upon an account that looked like hers in style, almost identical. It came up on my feed a few more times and at first glance I always thought it was the artist I follow, but the name was different and the subjects also, since the artist I follow has more versatile subjects. It made me feel kinda off, because most of the style traits were right there.
    I don't know how they're doing now, this was maybe last year. But I went through their profile and way far down the style was still the same.
    It's not a good choice to keep working in someone else's style.
    In better cases people kinda grow out of them while their own style develops.

    Wait, but that first artist, the pics used in the thumbnail, those are pics of Natalie Portman in the movie, Léon: The Professional. So the question is, is it a study of Sam’s drawing or is it depicting the same thing in his own style? And just as a point of curiosity, if it is a study of Sam’s drawing do the ways in which the second drawing deviates from the first bring it closer to the original reference shot from the movie? It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the movie, so I don’t know. But it’s worth thinking about.

If I didn’t start by copying vivzie pop when I was 12 I wouldn’t have the hyper colorful cartoon style I have now, a decade later. It’s not recognisable anymore, but I know where I started and what I liked about it. Now when I see people with similar style as mine I love to try some of their techniques to improve. Awesome art styles man. People talk about tracing but in my opinion you learn nothing from tracing, and it just feels wrong. Too many people have been exposed using it just too steal art, and sorry but thats not art! Maybe its just me. References are good however it is possible to draw from imagination regardless of what others say. Its a not easy be no means and requires alot of focus and is severly frustrating but it can be done. I do it quite often however its not the best proportioned, however its imaginative. I've still got a long ways too go though before I can say confidently I can draw.

    10 bucks says Snowdropsarts used to go by a different name, then renamed themself to scrape SEO and algorithm points off Samdoesarts.

    I call Samdoesarts art style the "Instagram's Generic Realistic Anime Style" and I find it very uninteresting personally, but if it helps people learn to draw by studying it then go off. Nothing wrong if you like it, but just not for me. 🫠
