- Destroyers were relatively small ships with limited endurance for unsupervised ocean operations prior to World War II, and most missions involved multiple destroyers and a single destroyer tender. The war resulted in larger destroyers. The American destroyers of the Allen M. Sumner class displaced 2,200 tonnes, while the largest vessels in the Arleigh Burke class can displace up to 9,600 tonnes. Furthermore, destroyers were able to perform the surface-combatant responsibilities once held by battleships and cruisers thanks to the development of guided missiles. Because of this, modern guided-missile destroyers have grown in size and strength, becoming increasingly capable of operating independently.

@Rohit Gaikwad good looking ships are irrelevant, Kirov-class Battlecruisers look amazing, as do Slava-class Cruisers. But what good do looks do you if you're at the bottom of the sea, some would argue that the Moskva looks better at the ocean floor, and I'm inclined to agree.
Also, Burke has stealth features, there's a reason for the angled features that point up and away from the surface. The same reason there isn't a huge radar dish or array at the very top. More modern ships have done a better job of hiding comms and other sensors

As others are commenting many new `destroyers` are under construction/undersea trails/or undergoing major refits. This may be a good snapshot of what is currently fully operational in service though untested or getting old. Like `Type 45 `as mentioned or Arleigh Burke. Still nice to watch thankyou "The Buzz"👍

A 30 years old destroyer is number one, sure she may be upgraded but she is slowly getting old. I cannot see her been the number 1 anymore. No matter how good she is, she is old and Flight III ships are just improvements if all ships of the Burke class got those upgrades they may remain at top for few more years but simply she is old.
By the logic the seijong the great is crap because it's based on the same Burk hull and uses American electronics.
@@Joshua-dt5vi Well we could say that to Kongo/Atago and Maya classes as they are based on Burke class design, however if i am not mistaken Japanese variants do have some Japanese tech. Still, software is easy, but you need hardware that support it. Burke may be good destroyer, but defitly not number 1 anymore.

And don't give me the excuse that its a 30 design because most heavy weight destroyers are based on the Aegis Burke design, even the Chinese ones. And even though the Flight III is based on the same hull as the Flight I (though extended) they are nothing alike on the inside.
@@Joshua-dt5vi Perhaps not but there is limit how much new tech one hull can hold, how many times you can upgrade it. I do not say that Flight III is not good ship, its a good modern ship, but US navy do not upgrade all its ships at same level. I doubt every single Burke class have the best equipment on board. Heck first Flight even now do not have hangar bay. Upgrading ships is not cheap, more work is done more it cost. Try upgrading Ticonderoga class, 40+ old design. You can rebuild them, you can rebuild the hull and superstructure to be 21th century cruiser but it will quite expensive and time consuming. Vicksburg just finish its 3 years of upgrade and was to be retired?? Flight III will most definitly stay for decades in service with its sucessor the DDG(X), but i would not be surprised if ships of first flight woud not be retired by the end of this decade. I dobut Flight I Burke can take on new destroyers that entering service. Still Burke class does remain number one on the list because of its long carrer and numbers. New destroyers are to enter service quite soon.

They are new hulls being Built by Bath Iron works and Ingalls Shipbuilding with the best 2020s technology the US has to offer, They are more advanced than the Ford Class Carrier, its basically a new Ship.

But Barak 8 is a missile base defence it can be out numberd and if Barak 8 fails to hit the incoming missile then the ship is screwed

Kolkata class ship is made by stealth technology so its radar so section is very small that means they will not visible with enemies radar so it's very difficult to targeted through enemy

i would praobbly switch 1 and 2 mostly because the arleigh burke has a smaller missile payload and the design is now getting a bit old and long in tooth. also the sejong’s are basically crusiers masquerading as destroyers they are huge.

If it was 1v1 alone then Vishakhapatnam would be at no.1 with its BrahMos ;)
@Rohit B I understand why you'd put ASW as number 1, it just reflects the different doctrines of other countries. In the US for example, our primary ship-killers is the Carrier Air Wing. Attack submarines are obviously the best suited for the task, but also the most at risk. So for US doctrine, Destroyers and Cruisers are tasked with defending air space and the ASuW mission to keep the carrier safe.
And I wouldn't be confident about a 1v1. The US uses the GQM-163 Coyote to test their defense. It's 10 feet shorter and has a 10 inch smaller diameter than the Brahmos, and it's capable of sea-skimming at an altitude of about 5 m at over mach 2.5 in terminal phase. And just the cherry on top, it also maneuvers and has ECM. Problem with current Arleigh Burkes though is lack of LRASMs

2 Kongo class are named after 2 battlecruiser/battleships of WW2 and the other 2 are named after heavy cruisers. Not WW2 destroyers

Im Australian and although i would like it to be up here, it kinda doesn't deserve to be. It lacks in power compared to newer Destroyers and only packs 48 VLS cells compared to newer ships which carrier above 64 and around 96. It was also a bit over budget but that doesn't mean much and also it was delayed. It is very powerful and in a Top 20 destroyer ranking, i'd place it around below 15 so 15-10. Same thing with the Anzac class as it lacks firepower and would prob rank around 15.
Of course it does it brings the exact same capability as the Burke class just less vls cells 🤷🏻♂️
@@matthewburgess1406 VLS cells is a huge factor of making a ship powerful. Hobart class destroyers lack in VLS cells compared to newer ships by a massive amount and the sensors are in the middle i'd say. Many other destroyers carry much more firepower so it probably doesn't deserve to be up here however it would be close.
@@spinoraptorspinosaurus6969 the US, Russian and Chinese ships are the only destroyers with more than 48 vls cells, the Hobart also has quad packed essm in 8 cells giving it a total of 72 missiles plus it also has cooperative engagement capability which is only on the Ticonderoga class cruiser not the Burkes or any other destroyer. It's easily on par with a type 45 or horizon class, it's basically a smaller Burke class just with a better integrated fire control system. It should be in this list especially after the Aegis system is upgraded to the latest version.

Your list should not include the Type 52c Destroyer, it is way down the list even the Australian Hobart Class is superior than the Type 52c. What you should include on the list is the Type 55 Destroyer which is also fitted with Railguns and the Yj 21 anti ship hypersonic missile system. Finally, youve ignored the best Destroyer in the world, the USN Zumult Stealth Destroyer with all the bells and whistles that no other ship in the world posses except for the Chinese Hypersonic missiles nor the railgun system. This channel most definetely has a british favorable bias ! The DARING Class destroyers have been plagued for YEARS with MALFUNCTION of its propulsion and RADAR systems. Different units of its class have suffered different of such problems along the years .
Still you decide to put them ahead of the Horizon -Class which has proved exactly the opposite in its operational deployments not to mention that it gave birth to one the most successful designs in recent years in military shipbuilding : The FREMM Class of frigates.
it actually has a rampant Indian bias, the type 45 had some teething problems like all ships but later it has proven itself to be among the best and it will continue to prove itself to be so, the Indian ships have rather obsolete Brahms missiles which only go mach 3 which are easily interceptable by the Aster series of missiles and the so called Barak ADFS is lacks capability
