Definitely need to put the 40 on the ground to get more bass. I run mine with an EQ pedal to pull a little more lows and low mids. With a mic you can mix the 40 to sound bigger out front. I love my 40. I use the bright switch...then dump the treble to compensate and it gets a jangle much like a blackface fender. Great vid.
Both amazing amps! The JC40 is my preference as opposed to an older 120 purely due to size and reliability, the digital reverb is more the sort of sound I am after as well, the distortion is a lot nicer as well, I use the distortion with synths occasionally.
Thanks! great demo. I have a JC40 because I wanted to get the early Johnny Marr tone, and I love the amp. Plenty loud for band rehearsals and mic'd up live it sounds awesome.

To my ears, the chorus doesn't sound as good on the JC40, but sonically, I like the extra brightness of the JC40. They both seem like fantastic amps. I can imagine the amazing sounds it would make with a little bit of delay.
Thank you Ravi! I’m in the market for a jazz chorus, but not sure if I want the 120 or the 40. Your demo was super helpful as I also play a lot of smiths and cure type tones
My setup is Ibanez GB10EE, JC40, 3 Proel footswitches for Chorus, Reverb, Distortion. I'm happy with the sound. The band consists of: my vocals and guitar, solo guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, drums.
Yes! I recently sold my 120 to a friend. I still use the 120 at fly away dates for backline and the transition is pretty smooth with my sounds, I just roll off a little low end on it.
Hey Ravi! Incredible demo of the amps. I picked up a JC-40 based on your eval.I wish it was that easy to pick some Smiths skills, too. Also, I'm intrigued by your guitar. Is it a Sheraton with a Bigsby?
Well I was hard to tell the difference between the two, they both sound really really good plus that one is much smaller and lighter and go with that one
Great comparison! I absolutely like the JC 40, but the JC 120 is pure sweetness! By the way... Is that JC 120 a modern model or a vintage one? Thanks a lot :)
Giovanni, I'm not sure exact year (I bought it from a friend) but the 120 is a toggle switch, not push button. Probably 90's. It's been well maintained, and I love it, but it's also 60 pounds! I just gigged the JC40 for the first time and was really happy with how it sounded. I did have to significantly tweak my tone for "How Soon Is Now" because the 120 has so much more bottom, which helps attain that swampy sound. One killer feature of the JC 40 is the stereo input-- which, in combination with the GT100, allows me to turn true JC 120 stereo chorus on and off on a patch by patch basis with my feet. Very cool.
Ravi Krishnaswami Yes, the true stereo input on the JC 40 in an absolutely killer feature, especially if you use stereo units at the end of the chain... Indeed, I'm having a hard time deciding which JC shoul I buy! The JC 120 has a fuller sound and it works really well even with bright single coil, while the JC 40 can be even quite harsh sometimes... Nevertheless, the JC 40 seems much more usable because of its reduced power, and obviously it's a lot lighter... My biggest problem with the JC 40 is that it can be harsh with single coils... Maybe the eq on the amp can help... And, what about the power of the JC 40? It's 40 watts also in mono, or only by using its 2 inputs?
You can look up the exact specs on the 40 but I'll say it was plenty loud in the rehearsal room. If anything, the tighter range made it feel a little more focused in the mix. It's definitely a tradeoff... if you need alot of bottom, stick with the 120... but I have a bad back so I'm biased towards a lighter amp now :)
if you can carry the jc120, stick with that, i have a 90's one, and its a killer amp... i plug in my gt100 at the main in section so i use the gt100 as a preamp and effects unit, and i use 2 preamps for left and right main in... also i dont like the distortion.. maybe im doing something wrong with the eq's.. if i use the boogie drive for example, it sounds awful... without cab simulation or mic simulation. if use the cab sim, it sounds too deep and bass... too bad... but for cleans that amp cannot be beat
The thing is, most JCs will sound great when used clean... Dramatic differences will appear when using dirt pedals in front of them. For instance the JC60 takes any pedal really well, when it's much harder to find the right pedals for a JC50...
This comment is spot on. If I could do it over I'd put the 40 on the floor. After a year of gigging with it on top of a case, I started putting it flat on the stage and got a better low end out of it. To be fair, this was in my garage on a concrete slab, and the 120 is on casters, so there isn't much of that going on.
Thanks for the great demo. I just picked up a JC 22 and am trying to dial in a similar sound. Any idea what you had the chorus speed & depth set at for these tunes?
Great comparison. The sound quality on the recording is really top notch. Both amps sound good. Not a lot of difference between them, so the JC40 holds up well (quick links: JC120 @ 2:55 & JC40 @ 3:20)
Thanks! First gig with it is end of this month at the Bell House in Brooklyn, and I've played there many times before with the JC120 so I'll report back on how that goes!
As expected the JC 120 has more bottom end due to the larger speaker. But fairly similar sound I should say! Edit: I just saw you commented that at the end lol How did you like at the concert Ravi?
Haven't looked back. Finally sold the 120 about six months ago. Have played some flyaway gigs with the 120 as backline and it's been a smooth transition. I'll always miss the low end on the 120 but not the load-out.
@@pedalscapes The big thing for me has been the stereo input. I run stereo chorus and delays in and FOH mic's each speaker and hard pans. Fills the room.
Hi buddy! Can I ask you a question? the chorus on the vintage jc (I have one too) is not adjustable, right? or only in mine can I adjust the vibrato and not the Chorus?
I have HEARD the 120 is god awful loud, which isn’t necessarily terrible... but if you live in close proximity to other people-it can be less than ideal. Does anyone have any input? I heard you can’t even put the 120’s volume knob passed 1 or 2. I’m coming here as a fender hot rod owner who sick of the hot rod, so I just really want a clean amp, but I’d definitely be concerned if the JC 120 is THAT loud
It's really loud. It sounds amazing in a room with a band and it'd be ideal if you play a lot of gigs where the sound set up is minimal and FOH engineer isn't mic'ing you. But the 40 is also plenty loud. I mean I wouldn't be worried, you do have a volume pot :) and it sounds good low.
prefer the jc120, sounds a bit fatter, and its too heavy. jc40 is much lighter and 'newer'. price for 120 isnt that expensive but i gotta think about how much i can carry
Good morning Ravi. I am interested in buying a JC-120. Here in Peru the official distributor sells one. The detail is that it is made in Malaysia. Please, could you tell me yours where it is made?. On the rear of the amplifier you can see ... Made in ...?. Greetings.
If i plug in a stereo delay pedal in the effects loop on a jc 120 on a ping pong setting will the delays go from left to right? If not the 120 does the 40 do this if you use the stereo input?
I think so but haven't every tried it. For the 40, yes absolutely, and that's how I use it. Really widens things. I insist that the FOH engineer mic's both speakers and hard pans them.
I really wanted to get the JC-40 for my gigs (using a modeler) but when I tested it at GC I could hear the speakers frapping-out once you turned up it up to about 5 on the master level when playing a simple two-note root/third on the 5th and 4th strings....just not enough clean power for anything but a small venue. Hopefully they come out with a tweener model that has 80 watts...that would give you enough clean oomph for a larger venue.
It's plenty loud enough for the rehearsal room. I have not had any shows where I didn't mic it and put it through the PA. On smaller stages it's actually helpful to mic it so I can keep it a little lower and put some in my wedge, and not blow out the singer and drummer. I hope that's helpful!
Just played my second gig. Both gigs have been larger venues and we have mic'd the amp. I would say that it's plenty loud, but you might loose some of the bottom by cranking it up over a band without PA support.
It feels the same as the JC 120. Comparing that to tube amps is a much longer discussion, which I don't feel qualified to lead. All my pedals are in the GT100.
it has issues when you get to a certain volume (>5) (speaker farts out, vibrations, bottom end issues). Without a PA, this thing is not much use in a live medium setting
It is not quite a fair comparison, due to the fact that you put the JC-40 on top of the JC-120. The 120 is going to produce more bottom end, having the floor to reinforce it in that register. With the 40 on top, and not having the advantage of the floor "baffle" to help in the low end, it is going to sound thinner. I have used both amps on stage, and one night in an effort to clear up floor space on the cramped stage, I put my 40 on top of the bass player's amp - with his permission - and you know what, much of the bottom end disappeared! Back on the floor it went! To really compare both amps, they have to be in the same physical and acoustical environment, as in next to each other. All that being said, the Roland JC-40 sounded very full and loud, despite its placement in the room. I own an old JC-77 and a JC-55, and would love to grab the new kid on the block.
Really interesting-- thanks for your anecdote about the bass amp. I had actually thought about getting an amp stand for the 40 but I'll leave mine low too. In retrospect, yeah, I'd redo the test both on the floor. Totally hear you on that.
does anyone know if you can run stereo pedals into the 120 like you can with the 40? i have the 40 and i used my stereo pedals all the time with it (since there’s a R & L input for stereo) can i do this with the 120??
You could by plugging left and right of your stereo out, each going into one of the 120's two channels, but only one of it's channels has the chorus and reverb on tap.
Came for the amp comparison, stayed for the Smiths riffs
