Amazing introduction to the traditional clothing. This is a great example of honoring and respecting individual/family traditions that shapes identity and pride and confidence. Very fascinating that the skirt is just an accordian rectangle! Amazing execution! Harpers adorbs.
Harper is such a good model! She`s so polite and cute! I really love to see you talking about your heritage and the Hmong people. I grew up in Wisconsin where there is a huge Hmong community and I always loved how kind and welcoming they were. I have been to a few Hmong New Years thanks to families who wanted to share their beautiful culture. I have so much respect and love for the culture.
I bet you are influencing Harper to learn to sew when she gets older. When I was about 4 years old one of my older cousins got married and I was a flower girl in the wedding. My aunt made all the dresses and I remember spending the night at my Aunt's place the night before the wedding. My aunt and a few other aunts were up all night sewing dresses. I woke up the next morning to a beautiful pink long dress to wear. I'm sure this event had an influence on me because I was always obsessed with sewing and I became a seamstress
If you're interested, Angela Clayton has some really good tips on how to make different types of hats, I really like her explanations on how she does all her historical hats and headpieces!
I'm so thankful that you're embracing the fact that you're Hmong and that you're pursuing your dream! I know being a hmong girl can be hard but best believe you are such an inspiration to many hmong girls !
harper is so patient and calm during the fitting! my little cousins would've made a ruckus and tried to play tag with me lol.the outfit turned out so adorable, good job! :)
I’ve been watching your videos for so long and never knew you were Hmong! I think your work is so amazing and deserves so much love and recognition in general, but also: the Hmong community is sleeping on your talent and platform! ❤️
So fantastic! Great example of traditional clothing and keeping your culture alive and relevant. I love that you were still sewing at midnight the day of the party. What sewist hasn’t done that!
Oh Thank YOU so much for showcasing your identity with the world. I for sure will show this to my kids so they too can be proud to be Hmong. We watch your channel weekly and so keep up the great work.
By far my favorite video of yours! Thank you far taking the time to highlight our culture! ♡ Harper is so adorable! The outfit looks so good on her. All shes missing is the sev and a red belt now. But those things are so easy to add. Looks so good!
My friend who I learned to sew from is actually Cambodian and once competed in a local SoCal Cambodian beauty pageant and made her own Khmer dress for the competition. If you look up "cambodian dress" on RUclips you'll see how bright and beautiful the dresses are. She did so well that her mom and older sister begged her to make her older sister's wedding gown and coordinating bridesmaids dresses in traditional Khmer dress style. It was absolutely amazing! I myself am part Asian (Japanese and Chinese) and love how rich East and Southeast Asian culture is, especially with their attire and food.
Very cool to learn something new about you. My number one favorite way to learn more about a culture is through the food, but tied at second is via the cultural dress & dance. The pleats are fabulous! Harper is adorable, as always. Belly Space! We could all use that, now and then! Thanks for sharing your culture with us.
This is so special and precious. I didn't know you are Hmong! I love the traditional dresses and festivals. My family visits a Northern Mountain tribe village in Thailand every few years, and we know some Hmong people there! Makes me miss them 😍
This might be my favorite Coolirpa video of all time, and that’s an extremely hard call to make. I say this because little Harper has stolen my heart, and it is so heartwarming to see her embrace her heritage in such a special way. (I mean by having her Auntie April make her a traditional outfit.) Also, I loved learning about your heritage, April. Thank you for sharing! I am from Vancouver, so I have familiarity with many Asian cultures. But I don’t know much about Hmong culture; I didn’t realize that was your nationality even though I’ve been a subscriber since you had just finished high school. Now I’m inspired to learn more about the Hmong people. 🙂
Coolipra, I’ve been following you for a couple of years now and I am so excited to hear that you are Hmong!!! Not just YAY to Asian American women doing amazing things but YAY to Hmong people doing well (not just in medical stuff/business stuff) too!!! 😭💪🏼❤️ I’m a fellow Hmong sister!
I miss Hmong outfits so much!. I am not Hmong, but I grew up in St.Paul MN in a very large Hmong community and I always loved seeing the outfits. They were always so colorful and beautiful!
Omg YES girl!!! I’ve always been so appreciative to see Asian woman like you that have a large following and be so inspirational and to find out that you’re Hmong just like me makes me so proud. Love you!!!
Hey April, what you’ve done is beautiful. Thanks for this fun tutorial and a glimpse into Hmong culture. South East Asia is wonderful and it’s great to see you celebrating your culture even whilst in America!
Amazing! I had no idea you were Hmong, I visited Sapa in Vietnam last year and was completely enchanted by the Hmong women's outfits. Also, Harper is adorable :)
What a Ham! OMG more Harper videos! She is such a Doll, Perfect little model. And I think you should challange yourself to make a traditional Hmong dress and accessories. Your traditional clothing is GORGEOUS, I love the colors and patterns, the jewelry so beautiful.
I knew you were hmong when you talked about Hmong New Year in San Diego!!! Loving this video!! I am Hmong too and appreciate this video!! Thanks for sharing our culture and clothing!! Maybe next time would love to see this an adult hmong women dress to add a zipper instead of tying it!! 💞💞💞
I once saw a video on how a dior dress was made that showed how they did the accordion skirt. It’s really interesting, they use a cardboard ‘mold’ that had all the pleats in it, they place the fabric on top, roll it up and then steam the fabric (i believe) so that it will hold the pleats. I don’ t know if this is the most common way to do it, but it looked really nice!
Yep it’s steamed in a huge boiler. My father owned a garment factory when I was growing up and that’s the traditional way of doing it. It’s called hand pleating in the UK. Narrower pleats are called crystal pleating and done by machine. I loved the smell of the steamed cardboard when the boiler was opened. Ah childhood memories.
What an absolute cutie. And how beautiful is that dress you made! Also all those different hmong dresses and outfits are amazing thank you so much for sharing with us.
Hmong is a minority in Vietnam. They live in the northern highlands of Vietnam. They have very special language and culture. I am Vietnamese and have several Hmong friends. I really like Hmong women's dresses, they are so colorful. In order to create them, Hmong women may take from 1 month to several months (because they weave cloth by hand, then embroidered only color on the fabric). Thanks April for bringing my hometown color to the world 😘😘
Wow these traditional clothes are so pretty and colorful! I love how you mixed tradition with more casual clothes, it’s a really good idea to make it easier to wear for a kid ^^
I don't know much about Hmong and I would find it really awesome if you did a video teaching us more about it! The traditional clothing is beautiful I love all the colors 💜
I always watch your videos because I think you do a great job with all the thrifted stuff you find. This videos I just had to comment on because it was very educational. I’m a family service worker and one of my families this year is Hmong and this really gave me such a great insight to them. I love learning from other cultures. Thanks for sharing!!!! The dress turned out beautiful by the way.
This is soo cool! I bought my daughters two of those accordion dresses a year ago and said I would sew them an outfit to go with them - but of course I was too busy and never got around to doing that. This seems like an easy project to do without all the cross-stitching work that I might actually be able to finish! Thanks for the inspiration. Also I think it would be super cute to add a shay - the apron!
Thank you for introducing us to your family culture. I read some more information online about Hmong. Your niece is beautiful. Great job on her outfit!
i've never really seen traditional hmong clothing but they're so pretty!! also lol at 6:23 when you're sewing with a face mask on, a girl's gotta get shit done while taking care of her skin!
Wow... Firstly, props to you for responding to viewer comments asking you to try a Hmong traditional dress inspired project, and secondly for coming up with something like this where you had absolutely no playbook and had to rely solely on improvisational ability. Happy Hmong New Year!
Wow, this is an awesome video! Your cousin is just darling and I'm so glad you were able to connect with your culture in a way that you relate to already!
I recently finished college and in one of my anthropology classes we read about the Hmong people in "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down" which is a great book and I didn't know you were also Hmong! I've liked your videos for a while and this is really cool too. Thanks so much for sharing a little of your people's culture! :)
darksister My anthropology professor last semester happened to be Hmong and gave us that book recommendation as well. Interesting book. He even brought in his toddler son dressed in traditional Hmong clothing, so cute🤗
Every comment I saw says they were surprised to learn April is Hmong...meanwhile I could of sworn she mentioned it in a vlog or somewhere on a social media somewhere so the surprise to learn wasn't from this video but from some point in the past. Whenever Harper is on film I just want to hug her as she too cute and reminds me of my cousins Like always nice job April and real creative.
ArtisticAsian1014 I remember she had a Hmong bracelet on in one of her videos. Someone in the comments asked her if she was Hmong and she replied that yes, she is.
This is my first time learning of the Hmong people! Your culture seems so beautiful and colorful! I will have to get some books from the library so I can learn more! Great video!!
I’m a new subbie and I’m beyond excited to find out you’re Hmong!! Love seeing my fellow beautiful Hmong women being successful on platforms such as this one 😊❤️

"She likes to give her belly space". Wise kid!
I loved this too! So relatable
Harper looked amazing but you were gorgeous in your pink outfit. We would love to see how you get dressed in your dresses.

Amazing! I had no idea you were Hmong, I visited Sapa in Vietnam last year and was completely enchanted by the Hmong women's outfits. Also, Harper is adorable :)
I love that you shared some of your heritage in this video. A couple of well placed combs sewn inside the hat would have helped hold it in place also.
The clothes are awesome - really colourful and beautiful! I love seeing the traditional clothes from different nations/people groups!
What a Ham! OMG more Harper videos! She is such a Doll, Perfect little model. And I think you should challange yourself to make a traditional Hmong dress and accessories. Your traditional clothing is GORGEOUS, I love the colors and patterns, the jewelry so beautiful.
