  • For many, New York City is a place of dreams. But John Torres knows it's darker sides. He and his family live in one of the city's homeless shelters.
For more than a year John Torres and his wife Zoe have been looking for an apartment, without any luck. A daughter being added to the equation hasn't made things any easier. John has a part-time job, but it doesn’t pay enough for them to make ends meet. The challenge he faces is one affecting many. As of January 2023, around 650,000 Americans are in a similar position - the highest number of homeless people in the USA ever, with more than 90,000 in New York alone. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many aid programs have been discontinued and the cost of housing has risen so dramatically, that in some cases residents can no longer afford the rent and end up on the streets. Many of the organizations offering aid are privately funded, like the one helping John Torres. But finding affordable housing is difficult. A report by Benjamin Alvarez Gruber.

John, please do not have any more children until you get on your feet financially and steady. If you have more children, you will only find it harder to climb out of poverty. You have a beautiful baby girl, work hard for her now so that she does not have to struggle later in life. Marry your girlfriend so that she has financial security should something happen to you (New York City is a very violent and dangerous place to try to survive in). Best of luck and congratulations on turning your life around and staying out of crime.

Maybe a lot of parents really cant understand that its not the same as 30 years ago, and that getting a job simply isnt cutting it anymore. You either got to have a job that pays like $6000/mo at least, or you got to have a lot of patience, or you have to be really lucky and have good friends you are prepared to share a house with. You cant "just get" a place nowadays. John, I was pregnant and homeless in 1978. I understand your challenges. I slept in a junkyard. I wasn't a drug or alcohol user, just a victim of circumstances. Too old for foster care at 19 years old and too young for the skills I needed. Without an address, one can't get social services. I say this because if I can make it, you can. Eventually, I found a job, bought land, and built a small cabin for my child and me. I still live here. Since then, I have placed an ad looking for an old one to tear down. Someone contacted me, and I spent a summer tearing their old house down. It took three years of working on the side to rebuild that old lumber to build another small house. I now rent that place out as a vacation rental. This is a good income for me since retirement isn't that much. Follow your dreams and take one step toward them every day. You sound like you have pulled yourself up before and I have no doubt you will succeed at achieving your dreams. Never give up!

This is sad. But there are several reasons why NYC has a housing crisis: 1. Not enough supply to keep up with demand. The population of NYC has increased to 8.5 million people. and the only new construction of homes is for wealthy investors and investment companies that buy them and add the assets to their balance sheets. 2. People who lack marketable job skills and higher education. For people who only have a high school diploma, well, an adequate paying job to support one's self, much less a family, will be virtually impossible to do. Paying rent and other expenses will also be difficult, to say the least. Of course, there is more that I can write on the housing issues in NYC.

Those children are going be consumers in the future, pay taxes that fund social security, they might also end up becoming the care takers of the elderly in the future. At the same time, I couldn't see myself having children while struggling, because all that might happen is the children end up inheriting poverty and struggle, too. I see American society getting harsher and more expensive in the future. Part of the conspiracy around the migrant crisis, I think the government knows they need people to do the jobs people like John and Zoe don't want to do. Ultimately, the children of migrants will reap the success because they will realize the opportunities this country is blessed with and make the best of it through hard work and education.

If you can’t afford to live in NYC, move. You’re a father. Time to act like it

The main question is why was John kicked out of home.........

I live in NYC. It's become a playground for the rich. The cost of living is criminal. Knowing all that, why would you have a baby if you were living in a shelter? Why would you add that stress and put a child through that?

Didn't know homeless people have apartments and ps5. Show the real homeless people

Homeless doesn't mean you're sleeping on the street with nothing. It means you don't have a constant home that is safe and secure and you're not in fear of losing your home.

@@TomikaKelly If you've ever walked around NYC you would know there are veterans missing legs and elderly people clinging to dear life in the streets. Showing this guy with his ps5 is a slap in the face to the people we see struggling every day.

People think that when someone is homeless, they are in rags and own absolutely no property 🙄. Remember, before the person was homeless, obviously they had a few possessions. For all you know, it also could have been given to him afterward. So much judgment in that comment.

@@foodiegal9923nah if you literally can't afford rent, you star in a documentary about how it's tough to survive financially and you state "I'm just waiting for help" then no, you don't get to have the latest games console and VR headset.
If he wanted a home with his family he'd be selling his games. He doesn't want a home with his family. He wants his playstation

The cost of living in NYC will never go down but instead keep going up, and that means the homeless crisis here and the surrounding Tri-State region will only increase and get worse.

The idea you can't get ahead because of children and not having your life in order is a lie. Children are a great motivator (John said, his daughter is the furnace). He's turned his life around from imprisonment to now working. She should try and get herself into position to help him instead of just relying on him to do everything. They just need a break.
Me: 47 year old single mother of 28 year old son who is married with my 2 year old grandson. I also have an 18 year old son. Raised them alone, no help from their father's or my family. I am a homeowner, who works full-time and also studying part-time towards a degree. It can be done.

Depends where you live and cost of living. Can't compare yourself to people living in uber expensive cities with 2k rents while raising kids

We lived in NYC and had NOTHING we had slumlord landlords and by the grace of GOD was able to afford airbnbs until we moved out of state. We never got a handout. We just struggled. I wish we had a baby then even though we were unstable my husband was adamant about waiting until we were stable. Now we have a huge 3000sqft house in a very upscale neighborhood. Life’s good but we need to go for fertility treatments. I’m so angry I didn’t listen to my gut. I didn’t want my children growing up in poverty but now we have an huge empty house and hopefully soon we will have our child. Currently working with drs. I feel for this family. I really do living in NYC all your money is sucked up it’s not normal you move a state or 2 away and you can finally breathe and afford a home, healthcare and food. I pray for NYC. It’s just going to get harder.
