I’ve checked out maybe a dozen acoustic covers of this song on RUclips, and no one else even comes remotely close to nailing the complex guitar on this song. And the vocal ain’t bad either. I’ve come back to this version so many times over the years. Well done, Mr. Hicko!
i know i commented on this a week ago but it's still awesome! You play and sing with real attitude. I love the scary Ian Andersony 'who you looking at?' glare at 02:28!
Jack Hicko, you are awesome one of the most prolific tull fans up there with andrea versici. you get it. keeping tull alive and well. thank you .. where is Jack Hicko. I want to see you live. arent you in southern Cal. let us all know please
Thank you so much for inspiring me to learn this song. You are a great guitarist and a great singer also, your version is just as good as the original!
I had my headphone on but was not watching the first minutes. After listening to the orginal you came up and i went like: "He Sounds a bid unlike himself there , better see if this is "89 or perhaps "95..." Nice work.
awesome one-man performance! (I was asking myself "when am I gonna see him without the shades" - never thought it would come whence on a quest for Anderson's Valhalla !)
Excellent ! It's Good to see someone else has the same interest in Ian Anderson's Acoustic Guitar as I do ! Outstanding ! I wonder if he knows how to play Cheap Day Return, Dun Ringill, And Baker Street Muse ?
This is another brilliant performance Jack. This obviously shares a few things with Salamander so, maybe if I can get somewhere with that, I may have a crack at this too. Watching you play just inspires me to do more. The bit at 2:56 where it builds up and then hits the full power with the lower strings gave me goosebumps! Great stuff.
Amazing. I just screwed with my coworker (also a Tull fan) by saying, "Hey, check it out, Ian's on RUclips", and he did a double take. You nail it that well. Awesome!
KICK ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wish I could here your vocals more because this is a stunning performance of a great song...How about and acoustic version of Heavy Horses?
I love your work, you are an inspiration. I'll never be able to play like that, but I do like to dream. good job, Ian is proud that his vision is continued.
Jack, sounds fantastic. You gotta help me out though. I'm working on learning this song. Sounds like you're using an alternative tuning. Thanks for the help and great tune!!
has Ian Anderson commented on that. I was very impressed.. especially at the start. Your guitar was superb I noticed the electric sound you imitated and you spaced the notes out superbly.. I really like the high riff which had that tull spooky and ethereal quality and the singing good though I could see your slight difference from the original in rhythm made pronounciation difficult sometimes. Do you perform to an audience? what are your other favourite music stuff?
Did you know my friends and SIU alum Rich Whitley who co-wrote Rock and Roll High School or Steve Hammel who worked for Dick Orken (Chicken Man)'s Radio Ranch in LA and FOX TV's radio ad branch in LA? Steve cast v/o talent in LA.
Excellent rendition. Thanks for mentioning alternative tuning to nmdodge coz when I saw U play a D shape on 7th fret in the intro, my brain almost shut down. I play this song with a dropped D on low E string only & get a pretty close rendition & saves me having to lug a 2nd guitar in alternative tuning around to gigs but your alternative tuning is right on the money. Would like to hear you play "Only Solitaire" off Warchild.
If Ian ever dies (which I hope is never) you my friend need to play the part in the movie " the life and times of Ian Anderson" " Fish, Sheep and rock and roll" I love all your videos...
Excellent work dude! This is one of my fave Tull songs, but unfortunately one of many that I can't find a tab for :-( So I'm totally with those guys below me and would sure like a tab for this. So far, I've been gonig at it for three hours and figured it out until just before the cool hammer/pull-off-thingy after the first line of text :-( Couldn't you do another one that's just a closup of your left hand, preferably in slo-mo :-)
Hey Mark. You remembered my request. NICE GUITAR WORK. Did you ever here Ian's live BBC version of this song from 1975? You did as well as he did. TOUGH SONG TO SING AND PLAY.
Wow, I thought this might sound weird without the full band backing... but I think doing it this way makes it sound like some ancient folk ballad or something (I mean that in a good way!). Hey Jack, great job!
I think you lived on Elm the summer of 75. I lived in Mae Smith that summer. Then I moved to the Quads, then to Lewis Park, then to the corner of College and University, then to Freeman St. and eventually to Makanda. But the clincher is fall 74-75 I lived on the first floor of Baldwin Hall. I really don't think you'll remember me. Does the name Mona or Ramona ring a bell?
Unlike you, I remember very little about my life, and especially the 70's which are very hazy to me, but I believe the Elm Street house was green. Maybe it wasn't even Elm St. I Lived in the Quads, however 75 - 76 and would like to see the video....where's this other channel? J. Annanances
I've found this song tonight and there's just no chance of getting it out of my mind... I'd have a great request: could you possibly tab it and send it to me? My hearing of music may not be that bad when it comes to getting into the mood but figuring out notes is not my best side...
Inspiring performance. If you would share your tab with me I would be eternally grateful. By the way, I do have a copy of the 1971 Tull Songbook. I never got as good as you but I am still trying.
HaHaHa! You even got some of Ian's facial expressions! Great job man. Are you related to Ian? Long lost twin or something? Seriously I love the guitar playing.
I am not Mona but I thought you might remember her. I have no memory of you living at the Quads. Some of the people I knew who lived there were David Schuster, Dave Horowitz, Barry Cohn, Mark Becker, Gary Pinsel, Mark Plotski, Neil Schlotski, a dealer named Hollywood, Jodi Herron, Debbie Kyler, Nancy Stockton and my roommate Mona.
This is still the best Cold Wind cover of all time, as well as his brilliant Salamander. Cheers 14 years later.
I’ve checked out maybe a dozen acoustic covers of this song on RUclips, and no one else even comes remotely close to nailing the complex guitar on this song. And the vocal ain’t bad either. I’ve come back to this version so many times over the years. Well done, Mr. Hicko!
Hi, it's DADGAD, just like Salamander except capo 4th fret instead of 3rd. Thank you for watching.
It doesn't matter how many times I watch this, this is so damned good, Jack!
Great rendition! I love this song
It sounds like your playing Ian and Martin's parts at the same time. Very cool
This is the best Tull tribute.
Very good rendition of a difficult tune! Great Job!
LC
I wish I could play like this!! o__o
How nice!!
You sir rocked it! I have listened to many people try to do justice to the song, but you took it to a whole new level. My cap is off to you
i know i commented on this a week ago but it's still awesome! You play and sing with real attitude. I love the scary Ian Andersony
'who you looking at?' glare at 02:28!
You are truly a minstrel Jack. Absolutely stunning performance. Bravo!

No one dares to try Tull songs like this one. Bravo! (Best album EVER, by the way.)
fifteen years later, still the best cover of this song! I tired to do it. Failed. Tip my hat to you sir. Well done :)
Jack Hicko, you are awesome one of the most prolific tull fans up there with andrea versici. you get it. keeping tull alive and well. thank you .. where is Jack Hicko. I want to see you live. arent you in southern Cal. let us all know please

After listening to the orginal you came up and i went like: "He Sounds a bid unlike himself there , better see if this is "89 or perhaps "95..."
Nice work.
Yes, agree completely, this guy does credit to Ian's work.
awesome one-man performance! (I was asking myself "when am I gonna see him without the shades" - never thought it would come whence on a quest for Anderson's Valhalla !)
you're an inspiring guy Jack......got me trying to play this tune, one of my favs.
A masterful performance
Fantastic cover! I doubt Ian Anderson himself could play this as well nowadays. One of my fave Tull songs.
amazing mate...you captured a soul of this song on the acoustic guitar...congrats...
Excellent ! It's Good to see someone else has the same interest in Ian Anderson's Acoustic Guitar as I do ! Outstanding ! I wonder if he knows how to play Cheap Day Return, Dun Ringill, And Baker Street Muse ?
JACK - Excellent - Minha flauta está implorando!
This is another brilliant performance Jack. This obviously shares a few things with Salamander so, maybe if I can get somewhere with that, I may have a crack at this too. You are outstanding. Wow. You play a mean guitar. Thank you.
Awesome. That is very very well done!
You even look like Ian Anderson! hehe Nice work! Cheers!
....absolutely fantastic.
Why do people insist on singing , but no one can come close to genius like Ian. You may come close to playing like him, but light years away.
Pure talent!
Hope you'll tour here in montreal :)
You're fu..ing awesome. I love your version!
I love your work, you are an inspiration. I'll never be able to play like that, but I do like to dream. good job, Ian is proud that his vision is continued.
Great version
Jack, sounds fantastic. You gotta help me out though. I'm working on learning this song. Sounds like you're using an alternative tuning. Thanks for the help and great tune!!
FANTASTIC GUITAR AND VOCAL ( Thats a fact Jack)

This is awesome... thanks.

cheers.
Dude you fuckin rock...that is all there is to it.

Shit, I almost prefer your guitar to the actual track
@mussie302 Once you sort of get Salamander, this just magically falls into place and is MUCH easier, except maybe the "bluegrass Martin Barre" part!
nicely done, sir.
thought i might like to learn this but now, now, after that, whats the point, that was brilliant, loved it
Perfect, really!
I think you lived on Elm the summer of 75. I lived in Mae Smith that summer. Wow oh wow ,just heard the Cover to end all covers ,better than Tulls version ,well done m8 ....class act!
Unlike you, I remember very little about my life, and especially the 70's which are very hazy to me, but I believe the Elm Street house was green. Maybe it wasn't even Elm St. I Lived in the Quads, however 75 - 76 and would like to see the video....where's this other channel? J. Annanances

GREAT cover Jack! By the way, I even think you look like Ian Anderson!
Who are the two (idiots) who disliked this? Not only is this song a masterpiece, but it was executed brilliantly!
Shame it's a moment out of sync Dude, this is a fabulous cover of the song that truly redeemed 'Minstrel'.
Love the Ian Anderson faces too :o)
Dan, you sounds as good as you did when I listened to you play on Elm Street in Carbondale...maybe even better. You probably won't remember me.
The Baron Zeep house?
this is seriously some great shit
! i enjoyed it and now i will learn it by myself :D
very well done jack!!! i'm jelous. LOL
Pretty good!
Impressive
Inspiring performance. If you would share your tab with me I would be eternally grateful. By the way, I do have a copy of the 1971 Tull Songbook. I never got as good as you but I am still trying.
great stuff! Instantly favourited! Are you in DADGAD? I play this song in drop D but it's very similar to Salamander which is DADGAD.
HaHaHa! You even got some of Ian's facial expressions! Great job man. Are you related to Ian? Long lost twin or something? Seriously I love the guitar playing.
cool!
Oh HELL yes! Thanks man...
Found it -- I think. Marc Eskenazi did part of it?
Hi Mark, thats great guitar on that. Any chance of tab or something?
