Yeah and I actually watch these videos unlike Isaac or the NLSS because I actually want to see whats going on rather than letting the game be background for this mans pogged banter.
NL, the computer line for best moves is right under the move. For the pawn to g5 best move, the line was nh5, gxh6, etc. You kept looking at the actual game line.

NL may occasionally lose a game, but his ELO is still climbing upwards, he's too new to the sites rating that it hasn't yet got him to where his rating should be. Which I feel is currently around 1800 but could definitely be 2kish with some studying, which he doesn't have a ton of time foe right now
In the analysis there's a tick box to "show lines" that will have arrows for your and your opponents best moves in a position. Its a good tool for working through a position to see why certain moves are best.
That's true, he's likely better at chess than most of his subscribers, but that's not the reason he gets no backseating. People who are better than him understand that explaining why a move is "good" or "not-as-good" can be really difficult. The only way to really do it is with the intended person actively paying attention to the boardstate you're referencing, which is why Gotham could do it. Imagine if Gotham went anonymous and started backseating NL in the comments, it would just not work at all and NL wouldn't even register the comment. Most people better at chess than NL are intelligent enough to realize that. Most of them also know that x move is better than y because "it just is" and don't want to bother explaining it.

Both of these games were great! Even the one that you lost was well played, you just got into some crazy territory and the opponent got the upper hand. Especially since that opponent was rated 1600+, and you had real fighting chances in that game, I think it's clear that you'll be reaching 1600 yourself soon enough! As a side note, seeing a move I preferred end up as the "best" move in analysis is some of the most powerful endorphin stimulation known to man. I might be bad at chess compared to you, but the occasional validation from the computer analysis is still a hell of a drug. Please keep the chess series going forever NL
Just poppin' in to say that the collab with Levy was awesome, I've been learning a bunch from your videos, and have started to have moderate success winning some games as a new player (~500). Hope the chess content sticks around for a while! Edit: He went in hard on that second game
Small hint for 22:46 - generally you don't want to put your pawns on the same color as your bishop because it blocks your bishop and makes it a good target for the opponents bishop. With e4 you let your opponent to close the center which makes your bishop bad and his pawn on c6 is bad anyway. After d4 in these structures you have to be careful to not let the opponent's knight to c3 or f4 as the too much pawns on white squares led to these weak black spots.
That second game was awesome. Locked in position, and NL moves pieces on both sides of the board to slowly grind the opponents defense down until they make a mistake.
Feels like NL's first time with a complicated mid game in the second match. You can see how uncomfortable he is but that just means he's in unexplored territory which is a good thing. You can see the gears turning in his mind lol, this is great content.
Great content! I really like how you put Levy's lessons into practice. One small piece of advice, I think you are playing the complicated positions too fast. Sure, you don't want to run out of time, but you ended both games with okay time on the clock. I think at your level (which is kind of my level too, I'm not talking down here) you won't usually use 20 seconds per move, you'll probably make most moves a lot quicker and then spend up to a minute or more on some really complicated stuff. That might be where some of your instinct to trade comes from too.
Hey NL! In the analysis screen, the engine suggests moves to follow what you do. Just underneath text like “h4 is best” in the upper-right-hand corner, the list of moves is what the engine considers best after that move. So you can change moves and follow the lines of moves it thinks is best.
that face when the computer dislikes one of your moves so much that it says the best move on the next turn is just undoing it even though nothing happened in that part of the board since :/ feelsbadman
15:30 QA4 blows them out. Prevents the pawn capture by pinning their A pawn to their rook. Then you get to capture their pawn, they capture back with either the rook or bishop and now you're up a pawn.
Moving the king to h1 at 38:43 is the way to get out of it is because the queen is trapped in that position. There is only one safe square to move the black queen to and it is g3 and there is still no safe place to go because your next move is always rook to f3
38:45 My theory is that engines like giving checks because it severely limits the possible responses that are actual legal moves from that point on. In any given position you can play dozens of different moves, and the computer has to look at each and every one to find out which ones are the bone head ones. The moment you check, it's suddenly only a few moves, sometimes even only a single one.
I feel like the important lesson from the first game is the one he skipped over, which is moving queen to G2 instead of D2 on turn 23. With your Queen in that position, you effectively block the rook from having any position on your side of the board while also defending your queen with the bishop without sacrificing any defense on the G5 pawn (actually making that a better trade for you if they decide to take)
Northernlion, just look at the moves outlined underneath "best move". It shows what the engine thinks is best. Also , if you click it you get the full variant in the variants overview. You can also toggle "show lines" at the top of the overview to see the lines analysis thinks are best.
