The original Tina Turner rugby league promo from 1989. Based around the theme What You Get Is What You See it features Cliff Lyons, Steve Roach, Brett Kenny and Noel Cleal.
As an American, I hadn’t heard about Tina’s NRL ad campaign until we lost her this week 🕊️ Reading about it now, watching these clips and hearing Aussies talk about the campaign, I can see how awesome this was 🇦🇺 what an amazing legacy!! Will be a part of Aussie culture forever👏 (with Tina’s Aussie manager, her role in Mad Max and this NRL campaign, she’s an honorary Aussie !! 🦘)
@@imalwaysright Both songs had Aussie Songwriters attached to them The Best was a dud for the original artist but when an Aussie, along with Tina reworked it, it became her hit.

On 24 May 2023 the Wonderful Tina Turner Passed away BUT her memory WILL live For Ever ! Thank you Tina for ALL your years dedicating making people Happy. You are simply the BEST! Rest In Peace
What a video! Tina was fantastic as usual, a wonderful WOMAN, and those guys with that energy, power, and kindness confirm the importance and appreciation of masculinity.
RIP Tina Turner, thanks for giving the game of rugby league the best promo ever there hasn't been one since that has come close to this or ever will for that matter.
Here due to Tina's passing. RIP Tina. I never really paid much attention to this promo as a kid.. but now as a woman I have a whole new appreciation for it. Some good looking rugged men in there
This promo makes me want to strap the boots on again at age 51. No other rugby league promotion has come close to this. Hopefully the NRL have a tribute to Tina Turner on Grand Final day 2023
This is the best league promo ever. I'm a Kiwi and this promo and the 1989 Grand Final between Canberra and Balmain were the reasons that attracted a huge NZ rugby dominated audience to watch league.
AFL or back then VFL must of reeling that they didn't get the chance to have Tina Turner as an ambassador for the game back then?! She single handedly help put the NRL on the world wide map here!!! We in Australia owe her so much, she was part of us especially back in the 1980's...Thank you for all you did here.
I grew up in this era where I witnessed the best and toughest players in league ever. This song reminds me of the good old days when rugby league was the toughest game of all! Love you Tina and definitely left a long last legacy with this league promo.
Epic sports promo. Probably the best ever. I'm a rugby union from NZ but this takes the cup. I grew up watching these legends and Tina was the best 🙏💯💪
same. the best eva. for eva. My heart hurts so much watching this as a kiwi league player daughter, and as a Tina fan. Loved her so much and to remember her for what she did for my beloved game, it's everything. xx
I loved this ad when I was little and will never forget the ad. I remember when u had a bad day watch this ad over and over again makes u more happier RIP Tina Turner Thanks for all the great memories
R.I.P Tina I'll always remember this song growing up watching nrl as a kid and how the players enjoyed her presence on the video and also with Jimmy Barnes singing "Simply the Best". Thankyou Tina for your songs you will never be forgotten.
Tina Turner thank you for this wonderful promotion, ad, voice for the ARL / NRL there will never ever be another promotion in any sports competition. This was true Rugby League at its best and with great players all round
RIP Tina Turner. This was the best Rugby League promo ever. I just wish the game was still like this in today's era. Takes me back to grade 10 in high school watching this. 1:17 : "the axe" Trevor Gillmeister.
Tina is an absolute legend here in Australia for that campaign, no promo for the game has even come close to how great that was. I was in primary school at the time and didn't care about footy but she got everyone interested in the game. We still talk about how good it was when she was the face of footy. And my partner - a complete NRL diehard - and I had hoped they'd bring her back one day and recreate that greatness. Such a shame that never happened, it would have been iconic all over again. RIP Tina Turner you bloody legend 💜💜💜
They should brig back Tina Turner's 'The Best' in all the NRL games - keep it as the Anthem of NRL long-term. It still hypes everyone up when they hear it and the crowd always sings along. So good!
When we were kids, they always played this for the NRL grand final. It was all over tv from 1989-1993, I think it is one of the best ad campaigns for NRL I personally think. She was amazing. In Queensland and NSW we love it.❤❤
The Amazing Tina turner. Australia was great back then. So much fun. It was a amazing. Went to see Tina twice in concert. Simply the best. The concerts went wild. Thanks for the memories you are the greatest single performer ive ever seen
RIP Tina, proud to say your anthems you shared with the NRL are a big part of the soundtrack to my childhood. Life was so much better back then, and hearing these songs always takes me right back there ❤
I live in Melbourne and follow AFL mostly but this ad was huge in Melbourne too- I like NRL just grew up with AFL. Best promo ever for Australian sports.
I'll join this chorus.. the glory days.. when rugby league was glamorous.. I'm a Manly fan.. 87 was great!!.. but every grand final in the 80's was awesome regardless of who played.. if anyone has footage I'd love to see that.. bring back Tina!! Bring back the 80's!!
Came here after the Mark Bouris and John Quayle interview. Arrived in oz in 88' and love this Rugba Leeg campaign absolute genius getting Tina involved.
Tina was living in London, and she had no idea about Rugby until she was approached by an Aussie ad company to do a commercial for the Australian NRL. After watching a video of a game she was an instant fan and agreed to record the TV commercial. But the parts of this commercial featuring Tina were actually shot in England, and the NRL players seen with her were in Britain playing in the off-season for English teams.
Amazing song and promo. I only learned recently that Tina's scenes were filmed in Fulham, UK where she filmed alongside Rugby players Gavin Miller and Cliff Lyons, who happened to be playing in England at the time.
Who is here after they found out Tina Turner died RIP TINA you are amazing may your songs live on. Can I say I found a lot of moes on these footy players looking back the best football years. Love you Tina 🇦🇺👃❤❤
Her voice wherever she goes...rocks the whole world...MUSIC lights up the universe. Tina Turner, you're not forgotten... 🎶You're Simply The Best🎶 R.I.P.🥀🥀🥀
It amazes me - with all the millions of dollars - that rugby league could never top this effort from 1989. This was a great advertisement for the game - it was catchy, classy and appealed to a large audience - men, women and children. Today, the NRL are happy to just appeal to a rough/simpler culture without trying to lift the game and the fans to the heights of the early 90s. Its a real pity.
They market towards bogans now which is the dumbest business model of all time! Bogans have no money. How often do you see them showing ppl at the games with no teeth?
Don't bag the bogans too much, they're the ones who dominate the TV ratings... why do you think the commercial news reporters/morning shows have dumbed down their vocabulary compared to channels like ABC or SBS, heck even those channels are being boganised.
I was a North Sydney Bears fan. My dad took us to all their games as a kid and we weren’t rich or posh, we just loved our team. We were the supporters who went to the footy regardless of the weather and the travel. The Bears were screwed over cause they didn’t have that working class image like so many league teams, plus they stayed loyal to the ARL at the time and where did that get us ? A foundation team that stayed loyal and got fucked off into oblivion as a result. The problem with Rugby League is that it’s a great product, run by small minded bogans. The Sydney Swans probably gained about 10,000 fans thanks to the NRL as well. I still love the game and watch it. I still go to the occasional Tigers game at Leichart but their is no passion anymore and that’s a bloody hard thing to get over.
Wow, ahh the memories of 1980's nswrl. As far as I'm concerned that was the best era of rugby league, the 70's and 80's. There was absolutely nothing like it, unlike in today's game to much interference with modern technology and video refs.
Such a simple concept for a promo and so effective. God I miss the 80's and 90's of Rugby League - used to be great watching the VFL/AFL on Saturday then listening to the league on the radio on SUndays thanks to Cenovis vitamins!!!!
This clip was at the start and end of the Canberra Raiders vs Balmain 1989 grand final video. It was a bonus on the tape I wasn't aware of initially. It added to the enjoyment of the game considerably and judging by the overwhelming positive response here, many others feel the same.
Have to agree. I think Simply the Best is too serious. Like a national anthem, you are not allowed to "Enjoy" it and have fun. This on the other hand feels more like its made to get you excited for a good time.
They don’t make adverts like this anymore! This was epic!! Long live the 80s
20 years later and its still the best promo
GhostOfBane 30 years later .. still the best ... nothing can beat it
34 years going strong
It’s the best they’ve ever done
