I think Tiamat’s Wrath is usually most people’s favorite volume in The Expanse. 8 and 9 are definitely my favorites, with 8 being the best. The authors really know how to start and end a series.
How close is the TV series to the book series? Because if it's roughly the same, I'll skip the book. I was so fucking bored watching the expanse. For me, it was like watching paint dry in space.😴
@@wheelz1325 Probably skip the books then. They stick very close to the books. Personally I loved both the books and the tv show but that's just my taste 🙂
Just finished it a couple months ago and totally agree. I felt like the series really took off in the second half, but I also feel like part of that was that the TV series “spoiled” the first 5 books for me a bit (the best Sci Fi tv series since BSG). I don’t think Book 9 will disappoint you!
Well of course it is great because these authors are not going to let you down and I agree that it does not get the recognition it deserves. I still have to read the last one. I am just an old sci-fi guy and this team scratches all of my itches. Love our channel! ❤
Good point! I have had more than a few bands let me down hard when I was least expecting it. That said I am feeling pretty certain in my convictions here. @@spencercorpuz
Considering how much Christopher Ruocchio loves audio dramatization/radio dramas he should really make a GraphicAudio version of the Sun Eater series happen! Those guys are awesome and they did an amazing job with Sanderson's books.
True but it does have a relatively successful TV adaptation right now. But I do agree that within booktube for various book groups it’s not on a lot of top 10 sci-fi series for some reason
I finished nemesis games, and then had to wait for the next book to be written. I got busy with other series and now I’ve waited WAY too long and you’ve convinced me I need to reread them all and finish the series! I still think Leviathan Wakes is a top 5 scifi book for me. Amazing stuff!
I need to try that series. I read part of the first book and was getting confused so I’ll probably start over. Debating if I should watch some of the show first to at least help me know who the characters are.
Big fan of the show and have the first few books on the shelf, but have yet to read them. If you haven't checked out the Ty and That Guy podcast, you should. It's Ty Franck, co-author of The Expanse, and Wes Chatham, who plays Amos on the show. They cover a lot of from the series and their favorite movies, and other topics. By the way, rad shirt! Suck it!
Update: I am struggling to finish Abaddon's Gate (near the end). It is not bad, I am just bored with it and the new characters. I definitely liked Calibans War much better. On a good note, it seems mostly encouraging from here. This is not a true complaint. I think it is more because the 1st book was so damn good, and the 2nd book was much better to me than most others suggest. I am so looking forward to finishing them all.
I think The Expanse books are the literary equivalents of Marvel movies. They are thrilling and captivating rides that maintain your attention throughout, but they lack any real depth. Even the covers say they are Hollywood blockbusters in book form. And this is not necessarily a point of criticism either; they are nice palate cleansers for me and I enjoy blazing through them in a couple of days, but they are certainly not Sci-fi's ASOIAF.
The Expanse was the first true sci-fi series I read as an adult reader. Because of being such a newbie reader at the time, I feel like I probably missed a lot and would get so much more out of it if I read the series now. Maybe one day I’ll get the time for a reread.
I read the first book and thought it was groundbreaking. And then read the second book right after and fell off. Can’t remember why. But maybe it’s time to revisit.
Im gonna have to get back into the expanse on your recommendation! I loved Leviathan Wakes, but i tried to read Caliban's War a year later and I was just confused on Avasarala's chapters. Im gonna give it another go
Not too keen on Avasarala after reading Caliban’s War couple months ago but I love pretty much every other main character. I’m interested to see where Avasarala goes as a character
I would absolutely love to get into one of these giant series. I'm just afraid that I don't have the patience or the ability to grind through that many books. I feel like after three books, how good can a series possibly be. I didn't start reading seriously, unless I was being told to because of schooling, until I was in my mid-twenties. I still don't read very much. I don't know how people read more than 30 books in a year. I don't think I've ever read more than 10 books in a year. I like reading, I just don't have the attention span for a series. I was really excited to read Game of Thrones, but now I don't think fat boy is going to finish before he dies. Which pisses me off, because I really enjoyed the first book. That's another reason to be hesitant to read a series.
Honestly the expanse 1is not a hard book to read. As someone who has bad attention spam the story have a lot of twists and turns and is really enjoyable. Book 9 is out and amazing so dont worry for the ending.
I want to read more sci-fi. The Expanse sounds right up my alley. I might be wrong but it sounds like the politics of Dune, mixed with the science of Star Trek, and throw in some Star Wars.
That’s right. But if you think about it: you guys in general don’t really talk about sci-fi too much: Silo (with its really good tv series now)? Banks - Culture? To mention 2, or PKD books as Do Androids Dream with Electric Sheep in context of the legendary movie Bladerunner? Neuromancer? So when we are thinking about Red Rising these are really better. Even Commonwealth Saga is.
@@mikesbookreviews anyways what I said is I don’t think it’s a fantasy reading community, a lot read sci-fi (the mentioned too some - Daniel Greene read the Culture and Commonwealth). What I miss are usually the vids. Because that’s what triggering the audience to read. Also I made a comparison on the last adaptation that a lot was missed with Rings of Power vs Silo/Reacher. While RoP was the worst show the 2 were the best and very good adaptations of good books too. They would definitely deserve the hype here. As much as shogun (and Tai-Pan for China) Neuromancer is just the base of all cyberpunk like Dune of a lot of things. That’s why.
TW still has my all-time favourite scene - the valkyrie going out in a blaze of glory.
It does not disappoint.

Woohooo!! Right there with you on this one-Tiamat’s Wrath was about as perfect a book as I ever read 💪
I just got a copy of Leviathan Wakes at the used book store and ready to start the adventure!
I’m starting Persepolis Rising today. I’v been loving the series so far, and I can’t wait to see how it ends.
Absolutely agree. And persinally, I liked book 9 even more!
Wow!
And you won't have to wait so long for the start of their new series. Time to get hyped!
But yea Tiamat's Wrath.. best book in the series for me.
Starting this in January due to your recommendation! Hoping to get some other booktubers interested in a read along.
TW was definitely one of my favorites in the series. Last book definitely does not disappoint so I'm looking forward to your reaction there.

Great series! Loved these book. Really felt the nailed the ending too. And it never hurts that my favorite character made to the last page.
Hey Mike, have you read the short stories in between the main books? If not, they are worth it, really fun and flesh out the world very well

The last one does not disappoint. I think I read it in two sittings.

Yes! Expanse is superb. And that shirt dude! Yes! dGenerationX!
My favorite in the series possibly. So good. Read it in 4 days 😂
Read up to book 7 last year and waiting for the matching paperbacks to drop slightly in price until I finish it. But absolutely loved it 🤘

I also have only one more Expanse book to go through. Kind of sad.
Defendant looks like the country version of Captain Ashford from the expanse
I thought 7 was alright. I’m having a hard time with 8. It’s not gripping me like 2 and 5 did.

You're wrong, sorry. Give it a go, it's one of the best modern sci-fi series.
It’s not really like any of those. Much more scientific/political sci-fi than space adventure.
Did you read The Churn Novella?
If I recall correctly, book 9 is the weakest of the final 3 (at least in my opinion), still very good though, just a little odd.
Are u planning on reviewing the entire series once u finish it?
Maybe.
How many are in the series? I got lucky and found books 1-7 in a charity shop for £2 each
9 plus a short story collection which is kind of essential for context
