    It’s a blessing that a major streaming service like Amazon saved the show, funding 3 more seasons and leaving creative freedom with the show runners. Still, I’m disappointed they did so little to promote The Expanse compared to other (worse, less expensive) originals that started during the same run. If Amazon had garnered a larger following of Expanse fans, it’s likely they would have signed up to complete the final book trilogy.

    People complaining about the ending being predictable sounds like they've already forgotten the lessons from GoT about "subverting expectations."

    • @bosyber
      @bosyber 2 года назад +3

      Yeah, this story, and maybe most good stories, isn't really about surprises, but about how humans as a population deal with their world and each other. So a 'predictable' ending doesn't change that their path to it is entertaining, and I'd say that with the premise they set up, it was the only ending that would really make sense, which makes it a _good_ think to me, not a bad thing. As you say, subverting expectation is oversold, especially if that's all you have, it just leads to nonsensical actions to get there to keep the audience 'surprised'.

    • @robertoesportes3987
      @robertoesportes3987 2 года назад

      In fact, coming to think of it, they have already subverted expectations from the moment humanity reached a consensus. The human being would never allow such a thing. Just look at what is happening in Eastern Europe today. It's strange to think that Avassarala didn't strike a blow right there when Holden gave Drummer the title of president when he resigned. Other than that, the series is very good. I'm a fan of any subject that comes to space. I love watching Kerbal Space Program gameplays and I just fell into this series, which respects the laws of physics and, above all, the human being, with all its flaws and qualities.

      I find it highly implausible, that Mars and Earth did not even bother to check the Laconia system for entire 30 years, even though what Duarte and his folks did is basically treason, and they (Earth and Mars) had reasons to suspect Duarte had the last sample of the protomolecule. In the show version this would be further aggravated by the fact they backstabbed 3 capital ships at the ring. So yeah, even if in the beginning Earth was too busy fixing what Marco did - Mars would never had that problem - their surface is not terraformed, so the damage would be minimal.

And hunting down few remaining Free Navy skiffs all 3 of them. We need to send a battle group after each and every one of them. Yeah, definitely we're too busy. And will remain busy for the next 30 years. Also, the traitors are broadcasting a scary "no trespassing" message... oh no... Of course we can't send a fleet. That would be simply impolite, rude even. @@zariumsheridan3488 Laconia has a sixth of the pre war martian navy, an immense minefield on their side of the ring. Earth has tens of billions dead and dying from meteorite impacts, mars is currently having a full review of its entire military, mass unemployment and a seriously depleted fleet.
      The belt still has terrorist elements and the transport union needs to coordinate control of 1300 star systems.
      It takes 30 years for the earth and mars coalition to return to pre war strength.
      More than that, the strugglings of other colonies shows that without sol support colonies tend to collapse. They expected Laconia to collapse on its own. They could not have known Laconia would have the capacity to build warships of game changing caliber.
      A long campaign into Laconia system just wasn't politically plausible.

    • @rendox
      @rendox 3 дня назад

      The tv show really undersold the amount of people that died at each event of the books. Eros had Millions living in there not hundreds of thousands. And Billions died from the three asteroids hitting earth. The asteroids impacts also blocked the sun and prevented food from being able to grow on a big part of the planet. That's why Prax finding an alternative soy like food source was a huge deal. The Martian dream died when people realized they could just colonize other planets, and that tends to leave a weakened government and population. There was too much to do, for anyone to care about a rogue ex-Martian movement that were behaving like isolationists.

    Another great Expanse vid. I’m a book reader too and I implore fans to read the books. The essence of the story is the same but there are some major differences with characters and character arcs that enhance the story.
    I know a lot of fans don’t like show Naomi (Dominique Tipper is still amazing) but book Naomi is almost a completely different person. Earth/Mars are more sympathetic and the writers are more critical of the entire Belt and how Belters treat Inners than the show. We get a more comprehensive picture of the true nature of interplanetary relationships that I felt was neglected in the show as well.

      Avasarala is in her early 90's at the end of S6, while the actress is in her early 70's. Remember Avasarala talking to Frank DeGraff in the first season? He was talking about something she did when she was 9 yrs old and he was an adult and contemporary of her father. He must have been more than 20 yrs. older than her. So the age thing is no problem.

      @@deanadewall8400 Your post makes me think about two things: 1) Out of the Rocinante crew, only 2 people reproduced, but only had 1 child each: Alex and Naomi (Filip Nagata). Although, didn't Alex remarry in the book and have another kid? So if he had 2 parents he replaced them. Naomi didn't & Holden could'nt because he has 8 parents and he's infertile after getting irradiated on Eros. (He has swimmers on ice, though due to his brief service in the military as per its protocol.) 2) Frank killed himself. He looked slightly older than Chrisjen. At a certain age elderliness starts to level off. I believe Ty & Dan used the anti aging thing as a neat plot device. Being 70 and looking 40 is a stretch. Being 70 and looking 50 is more realistic, but this is sci fi after all. Humans do die even if disease has been eradicated. Chronology catches up with them in the end.

    I find that book fans seem to be overrating the impact of picking up at book 7. I'm partway into book 9 now - I intentionally waited until the show was done to avoid spoiling the ending - and the only real differences that seem to have mattered so far are:
    - Alex is still alive
    - Show Drummer combined book Drummer & book Michio Pa.
    With those two pieces of information, you can just move forward with the story as is. Actually, even the second piece is kind of irrelevant, since you could just ignore the intermediary presidents and imagine that Drummer has reigned as benevolent dictator the whole time, and it wouldn't change the story.
    I say this because I find it to be quite a chore to read a book where I already know what's going to happen. The reverse, watching a show based on a book I've read, is a much more enjoyable order to do things in. And since the differences between the books & show seem to mostly fade into irrelevance over the time jump, it seems like a chore not worth doing.

      Thank you for clearing that up. That's kinda been my problem. I've started listening to the first audio book but I'm making really slow progress because it's just not that exciting when I already know the most important story beats. And compared to a tv show, which can still impress with audio, visual and acting, a book relies on the story being exciting.

      Imo, another possible hint that they might shorten the time window between the end of the series and the next trilogy is in one scene in the last episode when Clarissa (who is still alive 30 years later, albeit in worse health) is checking her health in an autodoc and sees that her average life expectancy is shown to be about 5 years.
      So, to me, that was a hint that the continuation might not do the entire 30 year time jump.

    Nicely done video. The book series is hands down the best I've ever read. Most series suffer from escalation issues - when the author has to up the stakes making everything and everyone bigger, better, and badder. This one does not, which is in itself a singular achievement. As hinted at above there is a 'rough' transition to the final three books. I started the first one twice before I was able to make the adjustments and once I did I was glad. Those last three books are a whole worthy narrative on their own. The endings for the characters are satisfying. And the TV series consolidated characters and arcs in ways that make it enjoyable on its own. I hope the authors get a chance to bring those final three seasons (not movies, please) to our TV screens. These books and the TV series will be around decades from now.

    • @normalmighty
      @normalmighty Год назад

      @@Niklaos The show did diverge from the books in quite a few ways. Characters died in the show that didn't in the books, or they dies at a very different point in different circumstances, and the show merged multiple characters into 1 at times, especially during the book 3 adaptation which was squeezed into half a season. Easier to explain how x established character got there instead of introducing the intended brand new character when it's all compressed that much.
      I would say book 1 is optional as it just adds details, and book 2 could be skipped if you wanted to, but I would highly recommend at least starting from book 3 so you're not confused about which characters are which.

    Its really ironic that if you think about it, books 7 to 9 are really the MAIN story of The Expanse. Everything that happened up to season 6/book 6 is almost prologue/setup. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear they tried to pull a Star Wars and make the later episodes, but then ended up having to write prequels first to fund it, and but then ended up getting stuck starting from the beginning of the prequels. I really want to see them make the next three seasons (or at least the next three books) because so much of what happens in The Expanse doesn't make sense without knowing what is really behind it all. The only thing I kind of fear is that so much of what happens in the books might end up being covered in exposition, because a lot of it is kind of hard to convey in action.

    I get, that for now they can't continue the story because of the 30 year time jump, but I think they could make a series in between book 6 and 7. There have to be lots of (little) stories to be told around the Rocinante's crew: visiting all the alien planets, solving conflicts between the different factions. It would be more episodic and less of a connected storyline but I think that could work.
    Maybe an animated series if it's too expensive to make all the alien planets look good. I was a bit disappointed of Illus in Season 4, it didn't really look 'alien' enough except for the artefacts of course, but none of the animals or plants mentioned in the books. Laconia looked nice though.

At least Alex gets a more fitting end in the books, I'm not sure why they killed him off at the end of the fifth series in the telly show, as it makes no sense at all. And my favorite character turns out to be a guiding force for humanity, which is pretty nice. It's hard to believe that it was over a decade that book one came out, a month before the fifth volume of the Ice and Fire novels, if I remember correctly. When I finished reading Leviathan Wakes back then, all I could think of was, where is this going next?!!?!?

And a tragic event forces them together. Maybe a terrorist attack on civilian transport that is damaged. And these characters are forced to work together to escape and we know nothing about how can they deal with the situation. And they later become instrumental in the rest of the books…
