I lived on Moorea for almost a year. Our house was in Afareaitu. I lived there in 1962 and one of the best things you can do to endear yourself to the people there is to speak Tahitian. I am fluent in Tahitian but that's not necessary. If you can just say "Ia Ora Na"=Tahitian greeting. Eaha to 'oe huru? How are you? "Your land is beautiful"! E mea nehenehe roa ta outou fenua! I have spent a total three years on about twenty different islands. That would be thirty if you count the time I spent on the Samoan islands. For them you would say Talofa, pofaa pei mai koe? The Polynesian people are among the friendliest people in the world.
This is the perfect information for this video! We hope everyone visiting or reading these posts gets to read this one! We loved the people and found this to be very useful while visiting! Thank you George! Where are you now?
While we were there during that time, there was rain. Mostly just afternoons but some days it was rainy all day. Regardless, this is still a fantastic time to visit especially if you can make it on a whale watching tour! Safe travels! Thanks for asking JoJo!
Above and beyond what I expected!!! Thank you so much! I love how you kept it organized with the different categories. One of the best 'costs' vids I have seen. I'd suggest you make this a regular feature of your travels. As someone who will be traveling full time in 2 years, this type of information is priceless for working out a budget. Thank you sooo much, very appreciated and again, well done!!
Roger that comment is all too kind! I hoped you would find it useful and ideally we do continue this trend with future travels. Wow this really makes doing these videos so worth it! Organizing wasn't the most fun but again information is power and I'm glad you are with us! Cheers friend! Safe Travels!
Great info! I'm moving there for 2-3 months (for whale season; I do underwater photography) & I've been in French Polynesia twice now (island hopping), but never for an extended stay.
Thank you! We hope luck is on your side as well! Obviously the island should be pretty empty when you get there (with all of the closures) and that means you'll get a lot of space to yourself! Have fun!
Very informative and supplemented with so much gorgeous footage! If I'm ever making plans to head to French Polynesia, I'll be sure to reference this video!
This question will probably be answered by a local in the near future. We hope to hear more about what happened here as well! Anyone that has information on this subject please share!
Hi guys! You have me super excited to try this now!! What months were you there for & how was the weather? Thanks so much for all the helpful tips & advice!
Awesome Tina! We were out there in the months of October and November. The weather was pretty consistent with afternoon showers, and only some days it would rain all day. It was a pretty good time to be out there especially considering you get the chance to see the humpback whales! We hope you get the chance to get out there! Safe travels!
@@MikeandLauraTravel Great, thanks so much! We have a French Polynesia cruise booked for next year & Moorea is an over night stop! Actually, heck... we might just cancel our cruise & live there instead! It would cost close to the same & we could do & see soooo much more!! I never thought that something like this could be possible to do, so I really appreciate the time you took to make this video! I can't WAIT to swim with the whales, it's on my bucketlist too! One more question, did you use local currency while there for that long, or USD?
@@tinawimberley5035 We used local currency 💵 often while on the island but mostly because we wanted to be very aware of our spending. Most places take credit cards, but the card readers can have some malfunctions and leave you in an awkward place if you don't have the cash on hand at the same time. Like the grocery stores and what not. Hope that helps!
if you prepay stuff, they will likely get you to pay in USD vs CFP - and that is always in the local's favor. Really appreciate the nuts and bolts of this video; would have been very useful to find it before we went there this year. Enjoying your low key video style.
We are interested in taking a family trip to Moorea but have serious food allergies to fish and dairy. Can anyone comment on the food labelling in grocery stores? Are there any dairy free options like almond or soy milk? Also is there some packaged food with ingredients listed in english? Any information would be great appreciated. Thanks!
Most of the foods will be labeled in French. There will be a good opportunity for coconut milk and there are soy/almond options but they're not always as prevalent as coconut. Fish is pretty easy to avoid. They have all sorts of meats at their main market. Mostly frozen meats but hopefully that's what you're looking for! Thanks NyB
Thank you for the great information. I plan to visit Tahiti next year, but not sure if I go ??? Already booked accomodation in. Papeete. Visited the place more than 20yrs ago, so things definitely changed, still looking for travel partner.
Very worth it! Mostly because, the French Polynesia still has some of the best snorkeling of many other places. The beach most well known and visited may be a resort beach before you get there, however I'm sure you'll find great places to swim while you're there! Good luck finding a travel partner! Thanks Urszula!
Where did you get your scooter from? I'm going to Moorea for 1 month and messaged few companies and can't find anything for that price. Thanks that you share your tips, really helpful video
Here is a link to where we rented from. rent-a-bike-moorea.e-monsite.com/ be sure to check for a weekly or monthly rental price. Prices always vary, but we hope you get the price you're looking for! Thanks for asking Katarzyna!

Hi there, do you remember which Whale Swim company you guys used? $180 seems a pretty good price for 8 hours compared to what I’ve seen recently. Of course, prices may have increased since you were there! Thanks for your vids!
I wonder how you managed tp get such low staying prices. I can't find anything like that for the beginning July 2022, and video was recorder just bit over 1 year ago. For example, the bungalow shown for $130 is now more like $230. I guess it might be due to "low" season, I'm searching for July. Other explanation is you booked them way upfront, while I'm trying to find something just one week ahead
Ok, I just read several horror stories from people on tripadvisor, & basically pleading with people to NOT drive scooters around in Moorea. How did you guys manage & did you see/ hear of any accidents from people riding scooters? We were planning on renting one the whole time we are there & so we will be transporting our groceries back & forth also (in cloth bags over my shoulder). I would really like your take on the whole situation, as now I am scared! Thanks!
Ok! We completely understand! So... Renting a scooter is a fun idea! If you have driven a scooter before then you should be in good hands. The speed limit is between 30 and 50 mph around the whole island and there are only a couple of "really busy" turn offs. The grocery stores specifically can be a little busy during normal business hours. I remember it was a little tough trying to get a weeks worth of groceries on to my scooter. Carrying bags can throw off your balance and make riding your scooter difficult. Depends on what you will be shopping for. As far as the rest of the island, it was very calm roads with no traffic. We didn't see or hear of any tragedies on bikes while we were there, but we have experience from driving on the crazy streets of Bali in Canggu and on the island of Nusa Penida. Both of those were insane experiences and driving a scooter on Mo'orea is nothing like that. In short I would say drive near the sides of the road so that drivers can pass you and just drive as slow as you need. Take every caution not to jump in front of other traffic including other scooters and absolutely be careful when buying groceries and carrying them along. We hope this helps you make up your mind. ** Maybe rent for a week at first to decide whether or not driving a scooter the whole time will be the best fit! 🤙 Thanks for asking Tina!
Hi Mike and Laura, thanks so much for these really informative videos on Mo’orea! Beautiful footage and really great insights. We really enjoyed the open mic night video too, amazing music Mike! One question I’ve been wondering about as I watch through these videos, how did you find the mosquitos on Mo’orea at this time of year? I noticed you’re outside in the evenings and had some accommodation with the open air kitchen and bathroom, so maybe not too bad? We’ll be travelling there with little kids. Thanks!
First off, thank you Daniel! Second... The mosquitos were definitely out, but the locals here all use mosquito coils. If you're not familiar mosquito coils are those little spiral incense style coils that smolder for hours to repel mosquitoes. They are pretty helpful and don't create a weird or bad smell. I would suggest bringing mosquito spray or finding it while you are there. I'm not so sure you can fully avoid getting bit, but it shouldn't be too bad. Again thank you for the positivity, feel free to ask for any other information! Safe travels!
We're getting down to the wire for our month long trip to French Polynesia. How on earth, did you pack for 1 month of travel with Air Tahiti's baggage restrictions!! I have no idea how we're going to fit all our stuff into 2 tiny carryon size bags!!
I like this question phoenixnmhesq! If idolize the epitome of beach vacation and that is a major goal for your experience, then the over water bungalows will give you all of the feels. Think to yourself "if I go there and get to the beach and see these things off shore, will I be content or always wish I was in there". The experience for us was really something special. The hole in the floor to see the rays and fish swimming below... I could go on and on. But, if you have a good amount of allotted time to spend and could give Moorea more than a few days, renting a place for yourself is a lot of fun as well. The simple answer is yes, but don't feel like that is the only way to enjoy yourself on such a beautiful island! Thanks for asking!
You'll need the exchanged currency. There are ATMs on Moorea but if you want money before you get there, you'll need to find one on Tahiti! Safe travels!
The weather plays a large role in what we decide to do for excursions and It would definitely depend on the exact time you'll be there. Even booking a week in advance might be better than booking too early 🙂 hope that helps! thanks for asking Laurie Hall!
We had found places with laundry appliances and wore the same clothes often. Obviously, mostly shorts and T-shirts but we had one nicer pair of clothes and a couple long sleeves. The usual temperatures are hot, but don't underestimate the weather, it can give you the chills as well. When are you guys headed there?
Hi. Trying to get a hold of Laura. Have some questions about Zebra English. Curious if there are still students booking with the latest news and if she'd be able to refer me if interested.
www.viator.com/tours/Moorea/Swim-with-Whales-Sharks-Rays-and-Dolphins/d5182-51487P2?pid=P00047554&mcid=42383&medium=link Here you have it! We hope you have an amazing experience!
How much would you say to bring for someone that will have to eat out for every meal?? I’m going next month and just want to make sure I have enough to cover! Also, do you think that it would be wise to stop at the duty free store at the airport in Papeete? Thank you for all of the info!! It really does help!!
It really depends on what kind of restaurants you will be stopping at but, if you were to stop and snag some fresh fruit from the side of the road or at a market and eat that for breakfast it could save you some cash. Otherwise there are a few great cafe's that aren't too expensive... And as far as lunch and dinner goes (combined) I would plan on a minimum of $30-40 a person. So in total probably $50 a day on the safe side, and if you save a little more on a few days or something you could even snag some food at one of the resort restaurants. Those places are quite a bit more expensive. I would definitely suggest the duty free for any liquor and other treats. You'll find the goods there and it will definitely be marginally cheaper if you're looking for the best deals. Glad to lend a hand! We hope you have a blast Nicole! P.S. If any of this info doesn't match up, feel free to shoot us a message to let us know!
None of that... However, check COVID-19 regulations and updates. They may have changed since we were last there. Thanks for asking Maxim! Feel free to ask about anything else!
We always had good service through Google Fi. It was $0.20 a minute though. We always just used WiFi and went through FaceTime or something like that. The WiFi there isn't very good. Pretty much everywhere had poor WiFi so, you could go that route but it may be blurry video and slow connection, but it works! Thanks for asking Yu!
That's a great question. If you feel comfortable riding a scooter 🛵 than I suggest you go with the more fun and adventurous way around, by renting one. I also want to suggest checking the weather during the beginning of October (like common expectations of the weather during that month) to identify if it might be rainy the entire time you are there or not. We hope you have the best time! We are jealous 🤩!
@@meandmerat8744 depends! You can take the fast ferry, which takes 25 minutes. The slow ferry takes 45 minutes. Whichever one you take, be sure to bring some Dramamine with you, even if you aren't prone to seasickness.
Terrible everywhere... Unfortunately the best wi-fi is in the over-water bungalows and that's not saying much. There are some cafes where the wi-fi is better than other places but depending on the weather, that signal could go out the window. Hope that helps 🙏
Hahaha 😂 right!? That's the point! Most people won't... I didn't realize that phrase would sound arrogant LoL! Either way, hello to you JayPiper UnCut 🤙
Right! Sometimes I slip up and say Moh-oh-ree-ah. 🙏 But we're always happy to have the actual pronunciation where people can see. Thanks Miller Foster!
You pronounce every vowel :) So it is Mo-oh-ray-ah. We're actually going back there for another two months in a few weeks. Since so many have trouble pronouncing this island's name, we are going to go around and record how the locals say the island name. Because they taught us how to say it! Stay tuned, my friend!
That is incredibly sad to know... People need to understand this more than ever. We need to be mindful of the habitats we visit! 😞 Sadly we will see a lot of decay around the world for many reasons. Thanks for helping spread that awareness Ron Hadley.
We run a travel blog! We were also very thrifty while we weren't on excursions. Cooking our own meals and that sort of thing. Thanks for asking Miller!
ok, hang on a minute..... You opened your video with... "If you don't recognize me"? In the infinite universe that is RUclips, your channel has less than 2k subscribers and you have the ego to say, "If you don't recognize me"?

Was the over-water bungalow a good buy? I know you didn’t pay, but if you had?
I thank you for good info., and doing great job guys. My question is, do I need French Polynesian currency in bora bora or just US$ will do?
You'll need the exchanged currency. There are ATMs on Moorea but if you want money before you get there, you'll need to find one on Tahiti! Safe travels!
Have you had the opportunity to visit Paul Gaugin's grave on Hiva Oa Island 🤔?
Unfortunately no... You'll have to share that experience when you get the chance Elizabeth!
Thank for the information.
✌️Gladly! Thanks Eleonor!
Great info
Thanks Kundu! 🙌😎🤘
Would you recommend pre-booking excursions or waiting until you get there?
The weather plays a large role in what we decide to do for excursions and It would definitely depend on the exact time you'll be there. Even booking a week in advance might be better than booking too early 🙂 hope that helps! thanks for asking Laurie Hall!
it's the most beautiful island only until you land on Bora Bora... the airport shuttle is a boat ($150Ea.)
Bora Bora is definitely on our island list. We'll have to check it out for ourselves 😜. Thanks G Lasser.
@@MikeandLauraTravel Moruuru 🤙
How did you pack for a month? We are going for a month also, and with Air Tahiti's guidelines, you can only check in carryon size luggage!😢
Mandy! Thanks for reaching out. Here's the best way to reach out to Laura! Email Laura@mikeandlauratravel.com
Do you have a link to the excursion with the whales?

Here you have it! We hope you have an amazing experience!
Thank you!!
@@SteveAbernethyCFA it was a good tour although we saw no whales, so, yes.
No whales!? Dang! We hope you get another opportunity! Thanks for your support Barbra!
Hope you find the link helpful too Steve! Cheers!
@@MikeandLauraTravel thank you so, so much!! This helps me out a ton!!
what was the name of the overwater bungalow where you stayed
That was the Sofitel! 🤘 enjoy
Did you guys need any precautions/vaccinations, pills for dengue, malaria, arboviruses etc. ? Thanks.
None of that... However, check COVID-19 regulations and updates. They may have changed since we were last there. Thanks for asking Maxim! Feel free to ask about anything else!
How good is the cell service there? My carrier Tmobile states that they have service yet, you never know how reliable.
@@MikeandLauraTravel
Thanks! Will just need phone calls and email. Thus, its sounds like that will be okay?
That's right! Video calls were not so reliable but that sort of data should be very easily received and sent! Especially at any of the resorts!
Great vid. Going to Moorea for a week in Oct; 2 people. For transportation would you recommend renting a car for the week or a scooter?
That's a great question. If you feel comfortable riding a scooter 🛵 than I suggest you go with the more fun and adventurous way around, by renting one. I also want to suggest checking the weather during the beginning of October (like common expectations of the weather during that month) to identify if it might be rainy the entire time you are there or not. We hope you have the best time! We are jealous 🤩!
Awesome reply, Thanks!
How long is the ferry ride?
@@meandmerat8744 depends! You can take the fast ferry, which takes 25 minutes. The slow ferry takes 45 minutes. Whichever one you take, be sure to bring some Dramamine with you, even if you aren't prone to seasickness.
How's the weather?
Always warm, and seemingly always sunny on Mo'orea! Cheers Kwansik!
Why are scooters so expensive?
Honestly we don't have the exact answers for that one. The costs on the island in general are high 🤗 but worth it!
How was the WiFi?
Terrible everywhere... Unfortunately the best wi-fi is in the over-water bungalows and that's not saying much. There are some cafes where the wi-fi is better than other places but depending on the weather, that signal could go out the window. Hope that helps 🙏
$55 for a scooter???! Well I'll stick to the South East Asia the rental of a scooter is roughly said $55 for a month...
Yeah! Undoubtedly expensive. There are a lot of pros though! Safe travels Benzinio!
How are we supposed to know you? Your channel only hast 2.27K subscribers.
Hahaha 😂 right!? That's the point! Most people won't... I didn't realize that phrase would sound arrogant LoL! Either way, hello to you JayPiper UnCut 🤙
moh-oh-RAY-ah
Right! Sometimes I slip up and say Moh-oh-ree-ah. 🙏 But we're always happy to have the actual pronunciation where people can see. Thanks Miller Foster!
Well, he just blew that. Thank you for correcting Mike's pronunciation.
I think you may have, in fact, been in Mor-ay-u....RATHU than More-ee-uh
You pronounce every vowel :) So it is Mo-oh-ray-ah. We're actually going back there for another two months in a few weeks. Since so many have trouble pronouncing this island's name, we are going to go around and record how the locals say the island name. Because they taught us how to say it! Stay tuned, my friend!
Moo re ah
Mo - oh - re - ah ;) Surprise, you pronounce every vowel!
Maybe buying a cheap car a use it during a month ..
That's a good idea! A car would definitely be great during the rain!
Moorea has been ruined, Lived there for a while twice. sad sad. wrecked.
That is incredibly sad to know... People need to understand this more than ever. We need to be mindful of the habitats we visit! 😞 Sadly we will see a lot of decay around the world for many reasons. Thanks for helping spread that awareness Ron Hadley.
Ruined in what way - could u be more specific please? Thinking to go there.
All this is mucho dinero. How can people like you pay for all this?
We run a travel blog! We were also very thrifty while we weren't on excursions. Cooking our own meals and that sort of thing. Thanks for asking Miller!
should show pictures instead of your face all the time ...
Good feedback! There is a large learning curve when doing this stuff! Safe travels Maimitti 😁
@@MikeandLauraTravel yeap you learn all along with experimenting - glad you are not cross with me !- your shooting are super though !
If you are giving advice on living there, you might want to learn how to pronounce "Mo'orea".
This is how you pronounce Mo'orea. You pronounce every vowel. Believe me, we double and triple checked with every local on the island.
"Mo-oh-rey-ah"
You bet---makes me crazy!
ok, hang on a minute..... You opened your video with... "If you don't recognize me"? In the infinite universe that is RUclips, your channel has less than 2k subscribers and you have the ego to say, "If you don't recognize me"?
Hey McKenna! We actually run a website that sees over 100,000 monthly visitors and many come from there. That's why we say that. We hope you have a good day going forward and we hope you spread positivity! The world needs more of it 👍
You are deceitful purveyors of financial services click bait masquerading as travel vlogers. I understand you need to have an income stream but why hide behind a travel vlog. Mike and Laura you are better than this
I'm not sure I completely understand your statement. Please elaborate!
