Go listen to the searing drum intro at the beginning of Van Halen's classic, "Hot for Teacher," from their hit 1984 record and rejoice that it was a paper route that decided the musical fate of the brothers' Van Halen. Born in Amsterdam on May 8, 1953, to Jan van Halen, an accomplished jazz saxophonist and clarinetist, his wife, Eugenia, Alex, his brother Eddie, and their parents moved to Pasadena, California, in 1962. Though the brothers were trained as classical pianists, Alex first gravitated towards the guitar, while Eddie first picked up sticks on a $125 Japanese-made St. George Kit, with Eddie delivering papers to pay for the kit. When Eddie was away slinging papers instead of licks, Alex stepped behind the kit, honing the craft that helped launch Van Halen into the pantheon of rock gods. When Eddie heard Alex's mastery of the drum solo on "Wipeout," Eddie turned his attention-thankfully-to the guitar. He thus set the earliest lineup of one of the most influential music acts in rock history, with Alex's drumming drawing inspiration from the likes of Ginger Baker, John Bonham, Keith Moon, Buddy Rich, and Ray Phillips, which all formed to create a wholly unique and singular sound.
The "Brown Sound" created by the band is often attributed to Eddie, but Alex insists the name is after his distinct snare drum sound, though Eddie’s virtuoso guitar playing is a sound unto its own. The band has sold over 56 million albums in the United States and more than 80 million worldwide and earned entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.
The offered custom Ludwig drum set with pedals, hardware, and Paiste cymbals used during Van Halen's 2012 tour in support of their album A Different Kind of Truth is presented. Alex, who uses and endorses Ludwig drums and Paiste cymbals, used this kit during the 60 shows on the tour. The tour kicked off with three warm-up shows at Café Wha? In New York City, Henson Recording Studios in Hollywood, and The Forum in Inglewood before the tour kicked off in Louisville at the KFC Yum! Center on Feb. 18, 2012, ending on June 26 in New Orleans. The Asia portion of the tour was canceled due to Eddie Van Halen's emergency surgery for diverticulitis and rescheduled for 2013. The tour grossed $49.9 million with over 485,000 attendants.
The complete custom drum kit was designed and constructed for Alex by John JD Douglas, Alex's longtime drum technician and liaison for over 20 years, and was played during the 2012 tour by one of rock's most influential drummers. The tour-used drum kit comes with an LOA from Douglas, who states that the kit, constructed by Douglas, was sold by Alex to David Frangioni/Frangioni Foundation through him, attesting to its authenticity.

For 75k starting Alex better bring these to my house
Definitely! And bring beers!
😂
How did you come up with the $75k starting point?
is it still bidding? link? I don't have that money but I'm interested
Driving Eddie's Ferrari 🏎️
"I'm no AVH behind the drums"
Proceeds to kill it...👍
Will I be able to load this drum set into my 2003 Subaru Forester? Of course the back seats will be down!
I don't think they would fit in my Ford Expedition EL(extra long), even without the drum cases and the rack🤣🤣🤣
Alex was the first rock drummer that inspired me to listen to rock music
I was never a fan of Alex's tone, but one things for sure when you here them you know exactly who it is!
Personally. Do not like much of the tone . Especially the snare . That sounds lousy . Almost like another tom tom . Not a fan .😮👎
What is not to like? The man was a monster. He was also the Leader of the Band. Alex was the guy. Eddie was always a waste, and Dave was so badass it was the perfect friction. It was great, it had an end, all great ones do. I was a big fan of old skool VH and also a huge fan of solo Hagar... I actually got on stage with Sammy when I was 17 years old and he threw me into the crowd. Love that era. When Sammy joined VH, I felt like two of my favs just perished. Yup. But Sammy survives and does great music with many projects.
Very True and very Rare! I find that Stuart Copeland also has a very Signature sound, and its cued off of the Snare Sound
@@jamesbarrick3403 Alex was definitely a great drummer, just a personal preference on drum tones....but like I said as soon as you hear him play you know exactly who it was, so he definitely had a signature sound
Funny to hear " I'm not a fan of Alex Van Halen's Tone" actually makes me mad😂 I'm serious I'm curious what tones you do like and what Player achieved it?........
Great video, amazing kit from an amazing moment. That´s rock history, man!
He tunes his toms high. They sound really good.
Big drums tuned high is an unbeatable sound
they are not in tune with each other AT ALL
@@quadzmotooffroad2904 could you elaborate? Thanks
Once a kit like this is mic'd though it always sounds bad ass in a concert venue.I never cared for his bass drum sound & not a fan of this head style either, but there's no denying once you hear those bass drums & snare blasting through a pa system, you can instantly tell it's Big Al for sure.
This is why they probably fired a ton of soundmen over the road...they didn't get the SOUND THE BROTHERS WANTED...
Ludwig needs to come out with an AVH kit.
Maybe like the one he used at Cafe Wha? in 2012 or
A kit like his tour kit from 1991 to 93.
Both set us had one bass drum.
But I'd rather see AL out doing seminars about his drum parts and his swing and sound.
I love AL.
Ludwig is a corporate entity that no longer cares about great ideas like that.
@Frank Burdo Drums 🇮🇹 They like making $$.
The big 3 that stayed with Ludwig during their heyday were Ringo, Bonham and Al Van Halen.
Ludwig should just go back to making exclusively 3 ply shelled drums. They are the best.
Or the stainless steel kit on F.U.C.K that's my favorite kit of his.
@@chrismoody9855that one was actually a chrome wrap over maple. In fact, it was for sale at some music store a couple of years ago… $64,000 … and that was just the drums. No cymbals or stands
The vertical striped black & white vistalites was my favorite AVH kit. Fair Warning Tour '81.
Beautiful set and great drumming!! Thank you for sharing!
All I wanna do is play drums now. Cats like this are the greatest
The drums are beautifully tuned.
LOVELY kit isn’t it ! Well Alex needed the booze flow built into the drums themselves….Just remember those old days where he would pour all those cans of Colt 45 or Schlitz Malt into himself and without proper civilised pub guidance it would go all over the toms and snare and RUIN them😢..He needed a nice little refrigeration unit to keep things nice and civilised…..lol.
Also on long tours it would RUST the CYMBALS .
So much for.. Alex being the last to play it.
Now this guy..lol
My Hello Kitty 3 piece drumkit sounds better than this...😮
Hi David this is great! You should have more videos like this.
You did a fine job. Alex would be proud. Very impressive playing.
Beautiful kit.. love the tones..
I see a lot of instructional videos of how to play the beginning of Hot for Teacher, but I've never been able to find a video of Alex actually playing the whole intro live. I found one where he played a little of it, but normally he starts out with the main shuffle pattern on the kicks with ride and snare. If anyone knows where a video of Alex playing it in its entirety, please share.
FRANK BURDO DRUMS 🇮🇹
Ship them to me.
Why do all of these rock star drums sound like they were fitted with trash can lids and plastic bags?
🤣 Beer taps on the Bass drums! AVH is always coming up with something outside the box
for the visuals of his kits! I remember the Mini frig in the bass drum a while back!🤣
If I had money to blow, I would surely buy these. Alex is one of my heroes. I wish he would come out of hiding.
I don't think this is a live gig kit, probably a photo kit. AVH had Simmons pads inside the shells and the only live drum was the snare. Everything else was Simmons.
His classic snare wasn't terribly ringy. It was iconic enough to know this.
Alex could show up, give clinics. It would be amazing.
Hot for teacher was played on Simmons pads. The sound of his snare drum comes from Alex.
Hate the finish.
WHERE IS ALEX?
This is amazing! Fantastic drums and cymbals. This drummer is really good too!
Why does anyone want to sound like someone else all the time?
I know what you mean. My approach to that is use that sound you love as a baseline. A starting point to developing your very own. What really drives me insane is how you’ll see where dudes bought the orange Bonham vistalite drums… then put the inverted Ballentine beer symbol on the front head like Bonham did
@MyVideos-fm7ug yeah it drives me nuts too...we are all individuals and we should treat ourselves as such. To imitate someone else to be like them is insulting to your own talents, be different man...its like all the George Lynch wanna be's who use all his guitars and same with the striped Eddie Van Halen guitars..comon be yourself be unique. No one can be someone else.
I love the big sound of this kit. It sounds full
I can't afford that price! (Still paying child support.) Is there an option for just a 4 piece ? 😄😁😆😅🤣😂
I have a busted Speed King pedal for sale 😂
@@specialkonacid6574 😀😃😄😁😆😅🤣😂
Nothing says rock and roll like a bass drum the has been converted in to a keg of non-alcoholic beer! I absolutely love rock and roll more than anything!!
I dont even play the drums but i would set this up in my garage and worship it
No info on drums including wood type, shell composition, number of plies, etc.
My Radio Kings are better.
Only Alex should play this drum set. He should buy it.
How much for one of the cymbal wing nuts? Asking for a friend 🤣. Big Al was a fucking beast😎
i wanna see the drumkit poison used.
it always makes me laugh at some of the poser glam bands of the day, these massive kits with doubled basses and racked cymabls and five hundred tomtoms... yet they play the basic 4/4 rock beat....
compared to a real drummer with a hihat, snare, and kick...
The two extra bass drums for visual is stupid. I always thought he played all 4. Later I found out he was only playing 2
One thing Alex wasn't known for was a ringy snare drum. He taped the A under the the head for a reason.
I just made that same observation just now. I’m glad to see that someone else noticed that as well. It’s all about the tape underneath the batter head. Even standard duct tape works just as good as gaffers tape. And all gaffers tape is, is weather stripping
Very good
Alex will regret this. What a foolish thing to do He needs an intervention IMO.
At least you played those octobans more then Alex ever did
The octobans sound great !
Will you take 2k for it?? ; ) JK... (Prolly best I just stick to my 4 piece lOOdwigs.)
This is one of the worst sound kits I have heard in a long time
Do you play at all?
I am not a good drummer. I have my moments... lol. I would pay good money if somebody would teach me how to play HOT FOR TEACHER. I will go on record that is the very best drum riff in all of rock n roll music. Yup I need to learn that.
I love it! I want it! I love it! The sound, his groove….,,🤤
Speed king pedals? 👍
Only costs 10 times more than a Roland.
So jealous 😍😍😍😍😍🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁👍🏻
Is the snare all the way off he layed low rasp for dure
Hell they don't sound any better than any others
Not my sound. But beautiful kitty
Man, you're a good drummer dude!
Never been an Alex fan. He's no Eddie.
Very nice 👍
When I saw the 1980 Invasion kit in Cleveland years ago I actually thought about sneaking back there for a quick picture with my right hand high in the air .... my wife said " you'll get arrested " i said this is like once in lifetime.... so i didn't but i thought about it 😂
Infomercial. ?
Sound like Ludwig's
I'll give you 750
sweet kit !
Thats GREAT.. BUT THE SNARE SOUNDS LIKE A HIGH PITCHED TOM WITH BROKE SNARE SPRINGS...AND THOSE TOMS ARE SO TIGHT...THEY ARE RINGING LIKE A BELL. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET THAT ACTION ON THAT KIT.TUNED LOWER, WOULD BE BETTER.😉
You're a great drummer
NOT QUITE MY TEMPO...
I would buy this drum kit….. and throw away years of playing guitar….now if I could just get 75k out of my guitars…. Yeah…. Probably not
When you say Alex Van Halen's drum kit, You really should be saying one of his many drum kits...
Where the deep end go
Needs more cowbell
Anyone have any idea what general pitch Alex's snare is tuned to.? E, G, F, F#. ???
Turn the snares on wth
Can someone tell him to tour with Wolfe Sammy and Michael ?
I like the big sound on this kit.very iconic sound.Alex and Ludwig thay both rock 🥁🤘thanks for the tour
Never noticed before but it sounds like the snare is off on the snare drum. I doubt it is but it seems like there's more "ring"
than crack to it...
That snare drum needs seriously needs some tape underneath the batter head. Then, it’ll sound like Al
He was playing a Tama Rosewood Mastercraft
Alex played big! All those cymbals and drums are massive! Great vídeo.
Guy’s a great drummer, love the “Jamie’s Cryin” tom roll….!
Amazing kit, Big Al. One of my favorites drummer ever, great video.
Too many drums,do you really need that many?
It’s really a 6 piece kit . 2 rack toms , 2 floor , double bass , and a snare . That’s the main kit . Timbales and octabons are secondary percussion items.
Custom made Octobans????? Yeah by Tama!
Sweet ! Still nice drumming!!
really no reason to buy anything other than ludwig if one can choose.
As last played by Alex...until this video
Are those Ludwigs the Legacy Maple or the Classic Maple?
Excellent looking and sounding kit, but you make it sound like Al had died.😢
Pretty nice. Had mine for decades . 24 inch
Waw..incredible kits🥁🔥
I can't even imagine how much they want for this.
Great sound and playing too.
Mirror image kit in thumbnail breaks my brain.
That was a really poor hot for teacher lol. I can't help but tell the truth. I've heard 12-year-old drummers on RUclips play it a zillion times better
nice chops. wrist of fire!!!!!! nice
Beautiful played 🎶🥁🎶
Was the snare on or off?
is that Hal Blaine's kit next to it?
Cool.❕🔲
Observations. That guy while not Alex is a very good drummer. Lol. I don’t want to sound like an ass because I truly love VH and Alex. I also play drums, but the kit sounds like crap to me. Too ringy and hollow. I do love the Paiste 2002 series for sure. Just being honest. The studio either changes the sound, Alex is magic, or the recording is crap. Lol. Or all the above.
Yup. That is the Ludwig sound. But through a PA they would sound great! Also, the guy playing them is not a hard hitter. You have got to hit drums like these hard. Play the rims with the batter head. Like Alex does. This dude is way to tip tappy.
Those complaining about the drum sound seem to forget that these drums are being recorded with one mic in a large room full of drums. In the studio, each drum is mic'd, the room is mic'd, the levels are set, it's played with other instruments, and the song is mixed.
what kind of BD peddles dose he use ?? anyone?
Looked like Ludwig Speed King. But, I've also seen Tama Iron Cobra one time.
