- One week. 81 miles. Matt Keene and Ryan Cantey of Marsh 2 Mayport (www.marsh2maypo...) paddle the length of the Ocklawaha River in support of St Johns Riverkeeper (www.stjohnsrive...) and the restoration of the Ocklawaha.
The Ocklawaha River runs along the western and northern boundaries of Ocala National Forest, and is the most important tributary to the St Johns River. It's health has been severely impacted by the defunct Kirkpatrick (Rodman) Dam, which creates a life-threatening barrier to endangered marine life such as sturgeon and manatees. The dam is also a needless source of government spending, as its removal would eliminate the cost of maintenance and repair, and improve the quality of fishing, bird-watching, ecotourism, and recreational enjoyment on the Ocklawaha, Silver River, and St Johns River systems.
