Awesome build
Nice vid, I got a tip for you when using drill and hole saw. To keep it cool you get some plumbers putty and make a 2” wall around the hole you want to cut. Then fill with about 1/2” of water and drill with hole saw. You can also get a bowl of water and dip the hole saw in it occasionally if you see that it is getting too hot! Great job though and I really like how that stand was designed. Never seen anything like it in USA!

hey there, yes it's possible just do sufficient research and planning. this was my first aquarium build and the last time I worked on acrylic was over 25years ago

the glue's fumes are carcinogenic so you should have recommended working only with strong ventilation... (and the best glue is the two-component new-plastic-synthesis one which is harder to use though).
while that would be ideal, I only had a spare room in my apartment to work on this project. So what I did for each glue session was crank open the windows and exiled the room from the rest of the house while the joints set overnight. I used acrylic cement following Joey Mullen (King of DIY RUclips) videos, will look up new plastic synthesis to read more about it. cheers

No worries! Yes 15mm acrylic is thick enough for my 5.5x2x2, I have no visible bowing on any sides. Tank and fish are doing great

You can actually use a router to cut the 2 holes and save the $500 lol. Also u can use a freelance forwarder, 1cbm only 80 and your cabinet total CFM not 1cbm. All in all Ur tank took $1550 to make. I would suggest u to actually just get a custom tank made by a professional maker. Thou it's missing the fun part but it will be relatively cheaper with 12mm tempered glass. A less possibility of failing. The purpose of DIY should be to save on cost imo. Nice job thou pure delication.
Yeah I wasn't confident on the router route as have not worked with acrylic in over 20 years
I checked with a few local builders for 6 feet aquarium, glass would be 2-3k+ & acrylic 4k and up
But yes wanted to share the DIY process for others on their own projects

Thank you for the upload. i am planning to build a similar sized acrylic tank but could not decide on the thickness of the acrylic. Most acrylic calculations suggest a 19mm (19.2532) thickness minimum but you have shown here otherwise. How is the tank holding?
Thanks for watching! My tank is holding up just fine. 15mm is the minimum if you have sufficient top bracing, I have 3 (centre and sides) plus a full top plate so I have little to no bowing on the front panel. Good luck with your build! Share pics :)

Using the thick acrylic glue is never advised.

. @yousefshahid Because it shrinks as it cures, creating a stressed joint, and the possibility of failure down the road. In this case, with thin acrylic sheets, using thin solvent and the pin method is better. Even 2-part is better than thick acrylic adhesive.
Was there a lot of glue mess afterwards, drips? If i make a mess on the acrylic can it be cleaned off?
I didn't encounter this issue maybe because I used the thicker acrylic glue instead of the water thin type

Both works, I find Acrifix easier to work with as it's more viscous like a glue
MTC90 is very liquid like, have to be more precise

@@DIYSomethingSG Thanks for replying bud, I am big fan of your work saw all your DIY builds keep up the good work and I hope you do more projects, coming back to buying from Canada I used translate to access Tabao but unfortunately they don’t ship to Canada, but I am now currently researching Aluminum T slot from local design engineering firms who can cut and give you the parts similar to how you got from Tabao but the added advantage being you can customize whatever you want with these Aluminum extrusions but they are also prohibitively expensive I guess I am right now now in planning phase and will only start my build in a years time, so it’s all good.
@@sureshkumarsivasubramaniam1895 yeah personally I prefer metal stands as compared to wooden ones. pay a bit more for peace of mind over the years. that's good to hear you're in planning stage, that's the first step! :) I took my time doing the research and sourcing as well, and learnt a lot through the process. keep at it and do update!

I'm sure you can use silicon too, just that acrylic weld joins acrylic on a molecular level making it a much stronger bond as compared to silicon
How did you decide on the thickness of acrylic (i.e. 15mm) to use?

It also depends a lot how you brace your top, and mine is essentially 1 large brace with cutouts
Think I got it correct since I have no bowing of any sides even though a little bowing is tolerable

why you use 2 glues ?
The first glue I tried was water thin, I didn't apply it too well, had bubbles in the seams
The second glue is much much thicker, covered up imperfections better, no bubbles

150 gallon is 5x2x2ft

Why acrylic?
2 main factors. Weight - my apartment building has a cap weight for aquariums
Skill - not familiar with either joining glass with silicon nor acrylic with welding, but acrylic bonds at a molecular level, so more confident to DIY with acrylic
