Just saw it. The way they told the story with the visuals, the artists, the rock stars and especially the songs, is very moving. God bless these artists for sharing their gift of voice and I wish them nothing but the best.
a must see for any blues/soul/rock lovers. These women are a HUGE part of this music history and sound that get very little acknowlegment.
As a black woman this documentary was so powerful to me, just to see how the voices of my people help make music what it is today. We set the standard, and I am glad that all of these beautiful women are getting the recognition that they deserve because I feel they represent all of us, especially when the industry can make black people feel so unwanted and so left out. I so am thankful to Londoners for being a bit more....free with their appreciation of women of color. Beautiful documentary. If you don't have anything positive to share than please keep it moving. This is just how I feel and what I got from the film and I loved it.
You just made this an absolute must see for me! Thank u!
privatethoughts85 Awesome!!! I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do and share!!!
Well poshmilly that is as Brit a handle as can be, so lets just say you have a predisposed slant toward Londoners and keep it moving.
meesalikeu Have you seen the documentary? Brit artist were excited for that soul sound. I have a predisposed slant towards *anyone who appreciates someone's skill or talent despite the color of their skin. How can you not love that in the 60's?
+PoshMillyT Absolutely & I just saw Darlene Love before that. You should come over here to Nyc and see her Christmas shows. Gotham City definately knows how to appreciate!
NPR did a story on this today with Mary Clayton and how she got that first gig with the Stones. Then they isolated her part and it was the most powerful thing I had ever heard. I was driving a tractor trailer at 70mph on I 495 outside of Boston at the time and I had to pull over, totally amazing.
Deeply moving documentary. Didn't expect to cry, but... well. It had a profound impact on me. 5 out of 5 stars.
I cried too...
my wife and i watched this last night.what a brilliant film. beautifully told, shot and edited. you can stream this on Netflix and if you've got access, you really should.
Yes. This is an amazing story. Like Bruce said “ it’s 20 feet to the front but such a long walk “
I learned so much. At 62, I am so embarrassed that I was unaware of the women behind the voices in so many of the songs that I loved. I am so grateful this film was made so that these women are given the recognition and appreciation and visibility that is so very long over due!!
Just watched this on the plane back from Canada. I now have the up most respect for you ladies featured in this documentary. Iv see lots of you up there on the backing line ups since I was a kid. My god ! you all deserve to be shinning brighter than the stars you have helped grow huge. You sisters deserve this documentary you have opened my eyes and I will now be tracking each & every one of you down in concert whenever Im in the USA. You all touched my soul with your beautiful voices.
Very touching documentary.
Cissy Houston (Whitney's Mother) lead a group called 'The Sweet Inspirations' and they sang backup for many of the greatest recording artistes. Cissy is said to have been perhaps the most sought after background singers, and if you listen to Aretha Franklin's 'Ain't No Way' I think you'll have an understanding why.
Greatest singer... Dionne Warwick, Whitney Houston's older cousin. I'd always thought DW was WH aunt until I checked just now. She was so good
This documentary was so good. There are so many backup singers and I feel that they touched on as many as they could. Judith Hill is the new generation and should have been in this. It just shows that the stories continue.
Fantastic and enlightening documentary about these hard working, under appreciated, and talented performers. Finally getting the recognition they so richly deserve!
The sign of a true professional singer is when he/she acknowledges the musicians and backup singers, instead of hogging all the applause.
Growing up during American Bandstand, Rock Concert, Midnight Special years, I was always awestruck by the sheer talent these women had. I am so pleased that they are getting the recognition they deserve finally. I cannot share this trailer enough when someone mentions one of the songs they enhanced. Keep sharing.
Finally watched on Netflix and this documentary was amazing, informative and a little sad. Why sad? Well films like these give you the good the bad and the ugly side of the business. Of course the ugly side makes you sad for people who were taken advantage of or just did not get the recognition they deserved, or simply just gave up and now living with regret. Overall this film was great and I highly recommend!
Just watched this via Super Channel! Loved every minute of it! Wow! Amazing Singers! What Would Music Be Without These Voices??? Definitely not what it is that's for sure!
They deserved to be recognized. They have been overlooked for too long. We always acknowledge the people in the front but overlook the ones who make them look good
by far one of my TOP 3 documentarys ever!!!! WATCH IT!
what are the other 2?
This is why I adore Judith Hill. She already has all these connections and calibre as an artist--not a singer; an artist--yet she is able to respect and be around newbies of the game such as Sarah Simmons, Michelle Chamuel, Amber Carrington. You can see that she is a true artist bec she doesn't see other singers as competition but as collaborators. Love, love LOVE her Desperation song performance on Jay Leno!!
There’s a POWER OF THESE (BLACK WOMEN) that Stand on STAGE WITH These ✊🏽🤘🏽all others such fire!🔥
That Lisa Fischer. I mean. Wow. Just wow! They all had their talents, but she just took things to some other kind of level man...whew
I saw a preview of it last night with a Q&A with the director afterwards. Let me tell you, my eyes were opened. I will never listen to music with backup singing the same way again. I will be seeing this again once it's released. Must see, especially for lovers of music.
LEGENDS! About time these fabulous singers are given their due recognition! =)
Brilliant documentary. Heart felt, inspiring but also so frustratingly sad. I loved it !!!
what a beautiful film.
This is a wonderful documentary. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Inspirational in its own way. Never give up on dreams!
Kids these days don't know about talent... In my day! Music was the shit and fire! Remember these beautiful voices
Yeeeeaah, in my day we all wore leaves and ate rocks, yeeeahhh. Probably a baby boomer.
@@BigDaddy-xx1gk Story for the actualy poor quality of music, happily there are always exceptions.
Man I really want my own hot black back up singers
hahaha...don't we all?
Yah, daddy. Me want too.
Lisa Fischer's instrument/voice is one of PURE beauty...
Such an bunch of amazing and talented down to earth woman the struggles but they just love to sing...wonderful to watch brought back so many memories..brilliant!🤗❤
This is such a great film. Best part of this trailer is making Claudia laugh about her Playboy pic!
It is brilliant. Very touching and inspiring.
Watched this lastnight "FANTASTIC" ~ 2 Thumbs UP!
BIG Praise & Hail to these Ladies ~ Packed Full of 'GIRL POWER' :-)
6:34 am singing "leaaaaan on meee...... Mmmm I'LL LET YA CARRY OOOOOOOON"....
Hopefully my neighbours won't misunderstand that.
Lennear gives me the chill on that Stone song.
mick was comfortable with all the backup singers knowing "their place"
He's the typical British snob
Cheryl Crow began as a back-up singer. Michael Jackson's I believe - on tour. Faith Evans and Kelly Price in the RbB world, though Kelly was known for writing too. Generally though, some back-up singers have their own careers and albums but aren't, sadly, paid much attention to by the public unless studios or artists back them immensely.
Lot of comments assuming only African American women are backing singers and all under appreciated. The likes of Merry Clayton were hugely appreciated. Backing singers could go on to front of stage, eg Reg Dwight (Elton John), Whitney Houston, Sheryl Crow, Luther Vandross.
Many are happy to stay as backing singers, like musicians who remain session players. There's far less pressure, you can stay home apart from occasional touring, you can earn regular money by backing many stars and playing your own stuff locally, etc. Like many domestiques in cycle racing.
The big money was in writing and recording. Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, Mick Taylor, Ronnie Wood, Ringo Starr, even George Harrison, were in relative background and earned a lot less money than MJ, KR, JL, PMcC but were often assumed to be as wealthy.
fantastic, let the shine on all contributors - we all shine in our own way!!!
We watched this for our group movie night. Every time Jagger was talking everybody was just like, "dude! Really." When he did the hot thing I was like, "Jagger doesn't give a f********ck."
this film blew my massive mind.
how amazing are these talented women, soooooo fabulous~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They should have Patti Labelled backup singer Debbie Henry on here, man she tore Shower The People and You Are My Friend a brand new one. That woman can sing her tail off it's on RUclips.
Patty Austin is one of the very few studio singers that I can think of that made it even marginally that 20 feet! The phenomenal talent by these singers (and they are not all females) is sadly overlooked. Rod Stewart is one of the few headliners that features his back up singers on the front line.
Anticipating this film very much. Very glad it was made.
And the Oscar Goes Too! Congrats You Guys On the win
And many more) deserve their chances to shine!
Loved this film!!!
I heard that too. luckily, I was in a Dakota pickup in a fairly rural area and just soaked it up. Intense.
Guess who just won an Oscar?
Not Dirty Wars...
Fucky McGee?
Oh she's there. A force of nature.
What a wonderful time
I have the DVDs Standing in the Shadows of Motown & The Wrecking Crew. This one is NEXT. Sounds like a Musical Must see & Hear
This movie was awesome
If you haven't seen this. Well shame on you. Your missing one of the best documentaries on Rock'n'Roll I have ever seen.
Lisa Fischer did go solo dropped an album and won a Grammy
Merry Clayton!
Inexcusable to not have Clare Torry appear in this movie… her backup vocal on Pink Floyd's "Great Gig in The Sky" is arguably THE finest performance by a backup singer on a Rock and Roll song ever….!!!
a mention even would have been nice…
maybe its because she's not Black… which this film seems to focus on… Black backup singers,,,,
I love all the gals in this film…. they are all fantastic…
but this was a tragic oversight!
cheers
charliewired
that song is good - I agree… but Great Gig in the Sky edges it for me… As far as everyone in Floyd is concerned Clare Torry sang that back up …
& while she might not have the career that these ladies do… admittedly
what an amazing one off/single "genius performance"
I also I really like the back up vocals in Dinah Moe Hum too but
I don't know who sang them...
Actually the back up vocals on Dinah Moe Hum were done by Tina Turner and the Ikettes!!!!
No wonder they are epic!
I gotta check this movie out
I am looking forward to this film.
I Love Her, from Sweden
My husband and I loved this documentary. I had no idea these women sang backup on such a wide range of songs. Their voices are extraordinary, but unfortunately it takes more than a great voice to be a successful solo artist. Luck and timing play a role and some performers just have that something special, a magnetic quality. I wish all of them the best and am glad their stories are highlighted in this film. I look forward to buying some of their music and the movie soundtrack.
I went to see this and it was A+ absolutely excellent
Wow everyone know Mary Clayton and Lisa Fisher because of The Rolling Stones amazing song Gimme Shelter Mary's vocals are awe inspiring as are Lisa Fisher' her and Jagger out in front on the stage playing at sexual tension just adds to the vocal range of Jagger and Fisher and Mary Clayton I don't think ever toured with the Stones.
It's about backing vocalists not lead vocalists.
*Spoiler Alert!
oh man. I really wished this film was completed a few months later so we could see Judith Hill's reaction to her time on The Voice.
I was really surprised to see on IMDB the "cast" of the movie and see Judith Hill because, well I already knew that she worked with Michael Jackson and everything but then I see her on the Voice, like starting over and sadly (but I think it's better) she left so early but now I see her on this trailer and it's amazing! She doesn't deserve to a show like the voice.. this is what she deserves.. and more. Big opportunity for her and now I really expect her album or a single soon
Amazing Film !!
looks so good
Madonna doesn't acknowledge her background singers, Nikki and Donna. She stopped working with them 20 years ago, but they were part of her greatest songs, shows and career peak. Recently she had a throwback tour, and she didn't invite them on stage as guests, not even once. She doesn't even mention them on her IG.
Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer --- it's about time they got the recognition they deserve.
All three always had lots of recognition
It was so good
Excellent documentary. I'm a Springsteen fan, but he seemed an odd choice to use in this documentary; I don't tend to associate his sound with that of these gifted back-up singers. When I think of musicians that have kept that sound alive, I think of Bob Seger whose backup singers include some who've been recording and touring with him for nearly 40 years - Shaun Murphy and Laura Creamer.
You mean "wife beater Bob"?
loved it!
For god sake, why isn't this in Netflix UK, I might just unsub from Netflix none of the films/shows I want to watch are ever on there smh.
hola unblocker is your friend
sleepzzz29 Care to explain?
Raheem D It's a web browser extension that allows you to watch regional programs. I'm Canadian, and we aren't allowed to watch US netflix or UK, or listen to pandora or spotify, but the hola unblocker lets me do all that. I love it
saw Lisa Fischer last night, stunning.
I'm going to see it this wknd!
Those 1970s Mary Clayton albums are as good as any soul records. Check em out!
Thank goodness - these women (and
LOVE Judith Hill!!!!!!
LISA FISCHER IS JUST TOP TIER VOCALIST
Good voices are everywhere. The main reason why these ladies didn't become lead singers is 1) no desire to be the lead 2) lack of the necessary charisma to be lead 3) lack of a different "sound". Diana Ross is the benchmark female lead pop singer.
Lilith Fair I'm waiting for your counter argument, seems you don't have one.
But Diana Ross has none of those qualities though lol
Lilith Fair Seems you overly defensive. Insults - the first recourse for those without an argument. And I have the documentary on bluray.
Lilith Fair So I was right, you don't have a reason.
MORON>>>!!!!
really? should mick jaggers face be the icon for this amazing film? especially since he was edited as the only one say that background singers just ooooh and aaaah. there is no doubt about his talent but gimme shelter would definitely not be as good without merry clayton!
It seems to me that Jagger appreciate and respect those girls the rest is only a posture.
if she hasn't, judith hill should go independent and release some singles now while she buzzing. then work on an album and release it. she's a star and too bad the big labels don't recognize it.
looks cool
absolutely love this film! See it!
2 questions;
1. Who's the guy at the start of the video?
2. Is he good?
Springsteen? Nah 😂
I'm an English singer and songwriter living in Ireland. A few original songs, such as I COULD COME HOME TO YOU, STRANGE OLD DAY!, HOPEFULLY, EMILY and others are on RUclips, along with musical theatre and pop ballad covers. Any feedback appreciated. Thanks. Andrew Hawcroft
but history is repeating itself though.
Can't believe this film beat the act of killing for an Oscar
+Rodolfo Sial they were both fantastic, but yeah the act of killing was incredible!!!
+Rodolfo Sial It proves how fucked up the oscars are, I guess the director is a friend of a friend..
Timing plays a big part ...It was time for these girls to be acknowledged.
lol i was like ITS THE GIRL FROM THIS IS IT :D
I wonder why Ronnie Spector was not included in this movie? May she Rest in Peace.
They're mentioned.
LOLOL! You got jokes!!!!
very interesting!
Finally, the credit they deserve!
genial
Is Clare Torry featured? Looking forward to it either way.
anyone knows the titles of the first two songs in the trailer?
This will not be missed by ME......
