Know the Difference: Icecreams V/S Frozen Desserts | ISH News

Did you know that our market has basically 2 categories of desserts? One is the ultimate favourite of all times - ice cream, and frozen desserts! Now you’d wonder….what are frozen desserts? Be prepared to see an example of the same! What is this? Now you’ll say that this is an ice cream. No! It is not.
This is a frozen dessert. Let us look at the basic difference between ice cream and frozen desserts. The story in the ingredient box changes everything.
Frozen desserts have absolutely no milk, absolutely no dairy products whatsoever. The main ingredients in frozen desserts are edible vegetable oils and fat and the preservatives, and the flavours. I absolutely know what you are thinking-- where is milk! Sorry to burst your bubble! But there is no milk. They might use a bit of milk fat here and there, but no milk. They have fats that are not good for health and can lead to weight gain too. The very common examples of companies that make frozen desserts are Kwality Walls, Nature’s Promise, etc.
On the other hand, an icecream is a milk-based dessert. Milk or other dairy products are churned and processed. It contains no bad fats. It is like a full meal and feels very creamy in the mouth. The brands Amul, Vadilal, Pastonji and Havmor are purely ice creams! In a general overview, icecreams and frozen desserts taste the same. Per 100 gm of ice cream contains 5.6 g of fat, on the other hand, because frozen desserts use vegetable oil, 100 gm of frozen desserts have 10.56 g of fat. The amount of fat in frozen desserts is double that of ice cream. It is clear which is healthier! We will always find that the frozen desserts will be marketed by highlighting their flavours as the titles and not the category of the product. They will write ‘frozen dessert’ somewhere in a corner in smaller font size so that a person doesn’t catch sight of it. This is a very cunning technique to trick customers into buying their product.
Since these products do not have milk products in them, they can qualify as non-dairy products. But you will often find them in the ‘non-dairy ice-cream’ sections of the supermarkets, which again is wrong. Because even though they do classify as non-dairy, they do not classify as ice-cream. All the ice-cream products have to meet a certain % of milk in the product to be qualified as an ice-cream. Frozen desserts do not have any milk in them. We already know that there are a lot of brands that market their frozen desserts in the ice-cream category. This is not only ethically wrong but also illegal. Now that we know all the facts, make sure to check all the ingredients and labels before buying!
