Archie, you're a big help to many musicians buying analog gear. But, there's something very important that many of us do not fully understand. Can you please make a tutorial video on tracking vocals step by step using the mic preamp, analog compressor, going into the apollo? Gain staging using all 3 pieces of gear (preamp, compressor, interface).

32-Bit Float is one of the best things to ever happen for ribbon mics. No gain boosters/Cloudlifters. I've run my RCA 77DX and MXL R144 HE through my Zoom M4 in 32-Bit Floating Point, imported into my DAW (Reaper currently), and normalized. Completely noise-free normalization because 32-Bit FP doesn't use analog gain.
So, if you get a ribbon, I highly, HIGHLY recommend tinkering with 32-Bit Floating Point.

I'm a total newbie to microphones but I really want a beautiful one like this one. I love how it makes your voice sound - although I'm guessing you have a great voice anyway. My question is... is there a particular mic stand that you recommend for this mic? I would love to have something that could sit on my desk if possible. I teach online art classes. Thank you in advance if you have any advice! 😍

      And Those Ribbons are Not
Large, But they are cut very
Precise and with just the right
Connection and tension to register minute vibrations. They need a little more care than regular diaphragm mics
      But Have their own unique
      Characteristics in capturing
      Sounds. Having a Quality
      Pre-Amp is where they really
Shine to get the boost and
Then be able to run your amp
at lower levels to get Very Clean low noise Signals.
Rode Has a Really Good one
and Royer Specializes in Ribbons, but Cost a Lot More.
      Nowdays, Lower cost ribbons
can hold their own with those
      costing much more. My dear
      Friend Bruce Swedien dearly
      Missed, Loved his Ribbons and
had those he bought years ago because they were taken care of treated with care.
I still have a Pair of Mxl Royer clones Used for my Sax and
a number of other MXL mics
that all have given Good Service. Their Quality Control
is the only issue that ever has come up. Not Audio Quality.
      That Ribbon compliments your
      Voice and is a Keeper🎩

I am considering this for my upright bass whatcha think in comparison to the MXL r144?

NO! You cannot run phantom power through a passive ribbon mic. It will kill the mic! Passive ribbons cannot take phantom power!!!

    • @jas_bataille
      @jas_bataille Год назад +2

True, although there are pres, such as the Coda pre-amp, which whill take the 48V power with ribbons and the transformer in the pre will take it, buffering it to the mic and it will be safe. Otherwise, NO!!!

Tho in this case then, can you connect it thru an XLR to USB cable directly to your computer?
