  • Steve Moriarty provides an overview of the essential laps used in gem cutting, tailored for various stages of the process, especially when working on large stones like a 744-carat Morganite. He starts with the master lap, necessary for supporting topper laps, which are his preferred choice for cost-effectiveness and versatility. Steve highlights the use of a 360-grit diamond topper for initial cuts on large gems, advising to use the coarsest grit necessary for efficiency while cautioning against the deep scratches it leaves, which complicate polishing. For finer work, he often uses a 600-grit diamond topper, balancing speed with the quality of finish. The 600-grit lightning lap is his go-to for pre-polishing most gems, offering a finish akin to much finer grits and leading directly to polishing for 90% of stones. For particularly hard gems like sapphire, he might opt for a specific 1,200 grit lightning lap to avoid gouging. The bat lap, a harder-than-average tin lap, is used with diamond polish, typically 50,000 grit for a finish satisfactory for most applications outside of competition. For opal, amethyst, and other quartz, Moriarty uses cerium oxide spectral laps. He emphasizes the importance of selecting the right lap for the task at hand to achieve the best possible finish while efficiently progressing through the cutting process.
