what a wonderful video! like you said, this topic is incredibly nuaced and as a fashion student learning about sustainability and the fashion industry there's still sooo much more for me to learn about the topic as there's people and systems that are not only ingrained but are taught from one generation of consumers to the next. As much as its the industries and these brands fault for contributing to the environmental and ethical issues happening in the industry right now; my professor brought in an interesting point that the way the industry is working right now with the topic of sustainability is like a "he said she said" argument. My prof explained it that there are companies who are wanting to integrate more sustainable systems within their production however it's the consumers who "aren't willing to pay the price" of sustainable. Then we have the consumers who are blaming the companies for "not providing affordable sustainable options." To be sustainable in fashion is to utilize nature in the ways we can however to become "fully" sustainable would also mean impacting water systems and taking up land for materials such as cotton which uses so much water to grow. Or bamboo which requires a toxic chemical to bleach and strip it to fibre we can use. it also means utilizes more technology (fully fashioned knitwear etc) which takes away jobs that a lot of third world countries rely on to keep there economy running. Again I'm still learning about the issue and its incredibly complex especially when there are so many systems to know to REALLY break down what the best possible options are to creating a sustainable, circular fashion system. Anyway, loved your video, it really got my brain working (as you can tell 😅)
Yes such good points! I know the industry will never just completely flip overnight so it’s always super exciting to see more innovative technologies and materials come out! May I ask where and what you study? I’m always so intrigued by sustainable fashion programs!!
@@inspiroue I'm at TMU for fashion design :) unfortunately its not catered to sustainable fashion but i've been able to take many electives and learn from profs who are knowledgable in the subject from an industry perspective which has been really insightful!
Thank you for sharing content like this…truly is meaningful that there are people who care about educating others and not using it to advertise more products. Love your content, style, everything 😍
@@inspiroue this is random but I also found out about VETTA because of you and ended up working there, which really changed my life and experience of fashion, so thank youuu💜

I always return to this video and I always come to the same conclusion: part of fashion sustainability and implementing circular economies has to be politicized and has to involve Marxist principles that directly combat the capitalist practices that led to conspicuous consumption. Fashion sustainability stopped being a bipartisan political issue years ago: when Rana collapsed--when Jeyasre was murdered. God rest her soul.
I watched a documentary on recycling and how they market towards consumers as of were the ones that need to be accountable when it’s the manufactures of these products producing unrecyclable materials and pollution g the earth. But I don’t think billionaires are a direct result of greed😂 some people experience a boom in success , than others for various reasons. Yes some of them are greedy and exploit countries but I do think people need to curtail their expectations on wealth. Because we already exposed their money comes form cheap production costs and extremely high retail prices. So having a gov to cap someone welath ain’t good because that’s controlling someone’s hard earned money and not all money is theft especially if it’s alot of it. That’s a communism move That’s not what any country should want.
why is youtube actually killing this video?
Wish I knew 🥹😭

So informative thank you for sharing your experience though and simplifying with examples 😊

Of course!! So excited to learn more - biomaterials are so interesting!
Could you do a full video on Aritzia’s greenwashing? As a Canadian girly it can be so hard to find quality clothes.
That would be SO interesting!! I will add it to the list x

Just but less clothes and wear them until they are worn out. Fashion is inherently wasteful.

You have to look for more small and local brands that for example use natural and biological textiles and dyes
Yes!! This is a great way to be more sustainable! x
I know next to nothing about fashion so this is incredibly informative! Thank you for sharing your insight and knowledge. ♥
