Amid growing migration crisis: SOS Méditerranée receives 'alternative Nobel Prize' | DW News

  • The winners of this year's Right Livelihood Award have been announced. The award - known as the alternative Nobel Prize - honors activists and organizations making the world a better place. It's gone to two people and two organisations.
    The people are Eunice Brookman-Amissah from Ghana, whose pioneering discussions on women’s reproductive rights in Africa paved the way for improved safe abortion access. And Phyllis Omido from Kenya, who fights for environmental protection.
    The groups are the environmental advocacy group Mother Nature Cambodia, and SOS Mediterrannee - for its rescue missions in the Mediterranean off of the coast of Libya. The NGO says it has saved tens of thousands of migrants from drowning this year alone. We take a closer look at their work.
    At the same time, Interior ministers from European Union members states are meeting in Brussels to discuss asylum and immigration. They're trying to make progress on long-stalled reform of the bloc's policy on the issue.
    EU countries have so far failed to find a common position. Leaders of frontline states including Italy and Greece say they can no longer deal with the large numbers of people arriving on their shores. Destination countries like Germany say they're also struggling.
    One of the countries saying they can no longer deal with the number of people arriving is Greece. The camp on the Greek island of Lesbos has become a symbol of the difficulties facing the EU's migration policy. Our correspondent Emily Sherwin met with some of the people there.
    For more on this we talk to Marie Walter-Franke, Research Fellow of Migration Management at the German council on foreign relations.
    And we talk to SOS Méditerranée’s executive director Caroline Abu Sa’da.

    The reason Europe is having this problem is because they have made it clear that everyone who wishes to come, can come. In other words the borders are wide open so,of course, if this will improve their standard of living, people will keep arriving, wouldn’t you?

    • @nevarran
      @nevarran 8 месяцев назад +1

      Only 10% of the boats are intercepted by NGOs. Hardly a boom.
      And I've seen plenty of boats reaching Lampedusa. You can go there and inspect them yourself. Find out how these "not sea-worthy boats" worth their way to the island.

    • @BernasLL
      @BernasLL 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@nevarran That statistic does not reflect the enormous rise in absolute numbers.
      Yeah, after the boom in business, entry-level obstacles such as client's fear for their life removed, smugglers now have a deluxe human trafficking line with a huge success rate and better boats who go in coordinated waves, as newcomers to the business take over the bigger demand dinghy low-cost travel (which still has a very good success rate, thanks to NGO taxiing).
      Tell me, if you start seeing a few of these come in actual millions-worth very comfortable ferry boats or yachts, will you still argue that there hasn't been a rise in the trafficking business?
      I don't know what the solution to this problem is. It's impossible to enforce the needed political reforms in authoritarian african countries, so they stop warring and stealing from their own people and develop beyond a need of constant aid, beyond uneducation fueled overpopulation, without somehow being called out for colonialism.
      But to deny the current consequences of the "solutions" found by NGOs is to deny reality, and perpetuate what we can both agree is a problem; people leaving their poverty ridden homes and making refugee programs in Europe democratically unsustainable (programs not meant for economical migrants willing to ignore the host's laws and attempt to dupe good-will programs).

    • @nevarran
      @nevarran 8 месяцев назад

      @@BernasLL There's no enormous rise. The numbers have been relatively steady in the last several years. And in 2015-16 there was a much bigger spike.
      And again, you're blaming the NGOs, whose role is next to insignificant. You can stop all the NGO ships tomorrow and nothing will change. There may be a couple thousand more people drowning in the sea per year, but the overall numbers will barely reflect that. And even that sounds like an overestimation, the majority of the boats they intercept would have arrived anyway.
