I swap socks 2 to 3 times a day learned it while in the Marine Corps. I was in boot camp at Parris Island in '89 when we got our boots before we even polished them our drill instructors told us to take them to the head (bathroom) and pee all over them. Then told us to take off our socks and put on the boots. We wore them all day and they fit like a glove after that. I never got any blisters and have done every leather boot that way.

Straight up and real, I have spinal cord damage from a T12 burst fracture, hiking is 100% out for me. Im 48 and have been dealing with the worst foot pain you can imagine. Burning, tingling, throbbing etc 24/7. I have young kids and will never be able to run with them or pick them up etc. My left foot heal is 3" off the ground. I'm on 600mg of lyrica per day on top of synthetic pain killers (no euphoria just pain relief). In fact my right foot does not feel heat as heat. Hot water feels cold. Not safe. My nerves cause me to itch so much I can remove skin and not feel it. No fun. So, I wish a sock change would help me, I cant event tell when I'm wearing socks or not? So, as a real silver wolf I can tell you, be careful to your audience, some of them are going through a lot!

Howdy Blackie , I buy my boots one size bigger than what I wear (size 10 so I get 11's). In the winter I wear thicker socks but in the summer I like a loose fit so my feet won't swell as much and they're also cooler , even with wool socks. Everybody says "You'll rub blisters on your feet with loose boots". I've NEVER had a blister problem. Sweaty wet feet will cause blisters.

Great video. I concur with you 100 percent. If your feet hurt then everything hurts. I was in the navy for 8 years. On board ship we were only allowed 1 pair of boots due to space constraints. My feet were always wet. I'd wake up and put on the same wet boots. However we had lots of spare socks, socks are the big difference. Always change socks. Even today, I still use at least 2 pair of socks per day.

I have always tried to get the best footwear I can afford. I'm diabetic and disabled now and it is more important than ever. If I go out, even in my car, I'll carry a pair of sock and underwear. Once I'm home, those socks come off and anything else damp. Dryness is the key, I've found for me. Also arch supports and over the ankle hiking boots. I've had bad knees since childhood and weak ankles. As I've aged my ankles got weaker from sitting around. Now taking my walks with a pack has helped a lot but without the right footwear I couldn't do it. Moral of it all is "Don't skimp on footwear or socks." It is just as you said. I wish I had known it sooner than life taught me.

Correct Blackie, if hiking, ensure that your boots/shoes fit PRIOR to hiking.
For those of us who already have extra wide feet, our choices are more limited, but they are out there.
Get boots and/or shoes with wide foot boxes, they will help tremendously.
Custom made insoles or at least well made insole pads help.
Merino or Alpaca wool socks are excellent choices.

You are right Blackie, the condition of your feet can play a big role in your general well being. I noticed that its not the shoe with the softest leather that allows me to be on my feet all day. Its the shoe that although the leather is harder and tougher, yet it has the best arch support that keeps my feet happy all day even if I’m standing up most of the time. The condition of our feet can really be a pivotal deal breaker when it comes to long hikes.

Bodies ruined by sitting. I rode a bicycle till almost 21yo. Plus many years of marching band and drum corps. Now I work in a factory (standing only). And army after some college. I was an 8 1/2 Wide boot in the army. And a 10 1/2 wide in tennis shoes. Back in band we would double up our socks for long parades, plus colder climates. When I take a week off from the factory, I can feel it in my feet. Two weeks off and I might as well taken a year off. For the factory job I drink a bottle of pedialyte every morning before work. It helps with muscle cramps. Saves me from going home early, or losing two hours of sleep from cramps after a 12 hour shift.

Good thoughts. If you are on your feet all the time like an industrial setting, maybe building houses, pay the extra for good work shoes. Do it while your young so you are not gimping around when you get older. I put a cheap set of insoles in that are better than what most shoes provide. Also make sure your shoes are laced right. You might need to stop loosen them and then retighten them before going further. The US army has been interested in soldiers feet since before WW1. Dr Munson Lt Col of the Medical Corps developed the Munson Last which was used by the army from 1912-1960. A modified Munson Last is used by Red Wing.

Greetings Blackie from the state of Kansas. It's amazing what so many folks don't know about their feet and how to get along on them better. I learned as a young private in the Army back in the early 80's, the importance of powdering your feet, dry socks, how to wick a blister (so the fluid drains), and how to V-notch your toe nail if you have an ingrown toenail (a definite painful walk in boots on a long ruck march). Good advice you're passing along. Thanks. God Bless.

I also really like down booties cause of how open feeling they are.
