    Dave, you have no idea how long I have been looking for that recipe! I used to use "old woodsman's bug dope" on my hat brim and the cuffs of my pants and sleeves. The saying was it repels fly's, mosquitoes, ticks, vampires werewolves and bad in laws!

    Bug Dope:
    2 oz Caster Oil
    3 oz Pine Tar
    1 oz Pennyroyal Oil
    Simmer
    Applied: Topical on skin in small amounts.

    • @HorizonsleatherBlogspot2012
      @HorizonsleatherBlogspot2012 8 лет назад +23

      +6star --I would recommend 4 oz. castor oil, 1 1/2 oz. pine tar, 1/2 oz. pennyroyal
      But that's just based on how I have used carrier oils and mixing topical oils for many years.
      Your mileage may vary.

    Pennyroyal belongs to the mint family and has been used to deter insects for centuries. If the oil is applied directly to the skin it can cause a rash, which is why I can surmise the reason behind heating it with other oils to make it less harsh for the skin. Pine tar is also commonly associated with being an insect repellent, and since before World War II, soldiers sometimes used pine tar soap to repel insects. So, it does make sense that this bug dope could work, and the castor oil is light enough to make a decent carrier oil for the mixture. I would use more castor oil and less pine tar, personally.

    Pine tar is extremely fragrant. Like a burned-down house. I use it for some old rifle stock finish recipes. I'm thinking it is not just a bug repellant, but repellant to just about anything or anyone in general. For the record, Gunny wax rifle stock finish: equal parts (by weight) BLO/bee's wax/turpentine. Pine tar added for color and preservative properties. Experiment with ratio. Melt wax and add the others. It will semi-solidify into a paste for hand rubbing into any wood as a preservative. Or you can leave the pine tar out of the mix, and pre-rub it into the wood full-strength, then the BLO/wax/turpentine finish on top.

    If you don't get many ticks in the woods you need to come down here to central KY and test that stuff on our hordes of turkey mites or 'tick nymphs' and regular dog ticks. I don't go in the woods much in the warm months except to squirrel hunt maybe. Lying down in the hay field to watch the clouds pass? No more. Couldn't pay me enough.
    Back in the 80s we didn't have so much vermin. I was in North Carolina in the military at Camp Lejeune in 85 and first experienced what we call 'turkey mites.' I said then I hoped they'd never find their way north. They did. They'll find the bridges across the Ohio someday.

    Pennyroyal Oil is a good repellent, repels spiders and maybe ticks in addition. Could be irritating to skin so I dilute it with a carrier and several other EOs and put it in a small pump spray bottle, like one from deodorant or bug repellent. I have been sternly warned to never use by or around a pregnant woman.
    The other EOs I often use in the same or larger shares include a double share of peppermint, a quarter share of oregano oil, a share of citronella oil, maybe spearmint, double of cedarwood oil, and a few others. This works but smells bad, so I might mix in four to eight share of lavender and maybe others, if your not going to freak out if a bee or two checks you out. I might use Witch Hazel and or old type yellow Listerine for a carrier.. So for a small batch to fill eight fluid ounces (one cup), one "share" might be eight drops. Then add enough carrier to make the one cup.

    I thought pennyroyal oil was toxic? I know pregnant women have to avoid it.
    Pine tar contains creosote, which I think is a carcinogen, or thought to be so?
    Maybe it's the amount that matters and small doses would be ok?

    • @nochitlins
      @nochitlins 8 лет назад

      Yeah, that tar is pretty much creosote without the volatiles driven off. Saw a show about some folks in the Siberian Taiga that make tar like that from the local trees to use as repellant. They seemed pretty adamant about its effectiveness, but it doesn't strike me as an altoghter wholesome thing to be rubbing on ones skin, 'natural' though it may be.
