Cowboy Coffee and Campfire Cooking! Green Beret Bushcraft Camp Part Five

  • Part Five of the Green Beret Bushcraft Camp Build using traditional gear and hand tools only! During this episode I use a natural spring for water, show you my favorite fire lay that I call the "elevator fire lay", show you how I make my coffee, and cook some oatmeal for breakfast.
This series is about a return to more traditional bushcraft skills and enjoying myself doing a solo overnight camping trip, while building the bushcraft camp with more traditional bushcraft gear. I have chosen to use vintage camping gear like an Oilskin Tarp, a selection of leather and waxed canvas items, and some hand forged items that are truly one-of-a-kind like my marlinspike. In addition, there are some items that would be considered more modern mixed in there.
The focus of this series was not teaching the skills by the numbers; it was meant to show "skills in context" as they would be used in a bushcraft camp setup.

When I brew my "Cowboy" coffee I keep a little cold water on the side. Add grounds when water is warm, let come to rolling boil for 2-3 minutes. Add the cold water and that will pull all the grounds to the bottom. My old man used to grab a cold rock from the lake to do the same thing as the water. The boiling pulls a little more acid out of the beans ... smooth cup o joe.

I see you measure ingredients like my favorite RUclips cook, Cowboy Kent Rollins, I like it and that coffee looks mighty tasty (that’s not saying much coming from a guy who drinks instant Folgers). Glad to see your co-star Ripp Sleeve is still hangin’ in there too, hope he makes it to the end of the series. All jokes aside, I’m diggin’ the format and think it’s pretty cool to see the basic stuff like coffee and breakfast, I get to learn something from it as well as get ideas for what to bring and do when I’m out in the woods, so thanks for that and looking forward to the next episode.

Where we go hiking/backpacking there are plenty of lakes and streams in the area we frequent. Only thing we have to worry about is purification and not drinking water sources that are contaminated with mercury (etc.) from mining. Whenever you find a water source like the spring you found, it really simplifies life. ;) Great video. Thank you.

The Australian ‘swagmen’ used to use their bush pots as their primary water container when walking from jobs, including during the middle of summer when temps in the sun get up to 117 degrees F. The main issue that stops people from doing this these days is that we don’t want to have to carry the pot in our hands all the time, but if you could come up with a way to make a large bush pot with a screw on lid that sealed properly so it could be carried in the top of a pack without spilling I reckon you’d make a fortune, that would another function to the already very versatile bush pot. The Vargo ‘Bot’ (bottle pot) is an example but it’s too small for carrying a decent supply of water and would need a bail handle etc but would great, as long as your next camp site where you would use the bush pot for cooking is also near water to replenish your supply until your next camping spot. But a 32 Oz bottle of water on your belt and another 120 Oz bush pot full of water with a sealed lid in your pack to replenish your bottle from every hour in summer 👍🏻

In Europe we call this style "turkish coffee", and for a full cultural appropriation (or how I see it, appreciation :P ) we call the cream "caimac". Since I learned how to make it a few years back, I've donated all my other coffee-making devices and I'm left with a simple pot and the stove. Love the brew and it also gives the process a sort of ritualistic aspect.

    Mr. Joshua
    Greetings from across the ocean!
Where I live we add a glowing piece of charcoal or wood to the coffee...it will whistle and dance for a couple of seconds and send the grounds to the bottom... it also gives a little flavour, and if you add just a liiitle pinch of salt...it just brings up the flavour of the coffee (it's a question of taste, bacause I do not put sugar or honey to my coffee, so the slightly salted flavour is ok).
Thanks for your work and your teachings... there are too many sofa coachers and tv stars coachers on the loose out there... and this can be quite dangerous for the "green-horns" in bushcraft or prepperedness!
You never know when those little skills will be necessary...people who laughed at me yesterday might be begging at my door tomorrow...
In this moment I am confined to my house because of the Co19... neither me nor my son are allowed to go out shopping...so we will have to eat, drink and ass-wipe with the "reserves" crazy-dad piled-up... we will be out of bread today... I can live with my "sailors' cookies" but my son likes bread very much... As I think I still have a bag of flour and some yeast I promised him I'll bake some bread tomorrow... and if we are short of butane (which I prefer to keep for hot baths) I 'll cook it in the charcoal outside! Tomorrow "crazy bushcraft dad" will be the belly-filling hero!!!

Thank you, warrior. Like seeing a Zippo. I was never a smoker, but appreciated lighter talent. Gandolf smoke rings from a pipe, too.

I usually prefer a birch stirring stick myself but that maple stirred coffe looks good.
    Gotta try that new technique.

I've been watching your videos for a long time, and this is the first time I've ever seen you with your hat off. And it was just for a moment! You should take your hat off more often. ( 2:56 ) Freakin killer hair, and the cut looks great on you. Thank you for your service and all your doing now.

The sound of that bottle fillling up with that tasty water is so damn satisfying. There is a trail near Grandfather Mountain called Profile, its gnarly hike to the top and there is a pipe fed spring near the top. Nice reward for the tough hike to the top

I'm with you Josh with the raisins in oatmeal. I am thinking about mixing it and sticking dried banana or trail mix in it . That construction noise must have been a right killer lol.

Great video...I like that fire setup. You could put the coffee grinds in at the first and let them boil with the water.

Cowboy coffee- for people that say coffee is too acidic. If you actually boil it for 2-3 minutes, it breaks down the acid. Also, leave a little room to add a little cold water. That drives the grounds to the bottom. Depends on how big your pot is, how much you add. Picked up those tips from a chuck wagon cook that has a youtube channel (Cowboy Kent Rollins)

Howdy, new sub doing some backtracking here, checking out the many interesting videos you've made, very good material you cover, very thoughtfully taught. I had to do a double take on this one, seems we are both Chock Full O Nuts fans, never heard anybody admit it before; it is great tasting coffee, been a fan for decades. In our brave new world, finding certain items is getting tougher, brands like our coffee is hit and miss these days. As a matter of fact I'm drinking the last of my CFoN as I type this, the last trip to the store our brand was still MIA. Next time you look for raisins, get a bag of the stuff I use, it has raisins, dried cranberries, dried cherries, and dried golden raisins; this mix is just amazing in the mornings. You can thank me later. Best wishes, keep the shiny side up.
