    Hello.. First of all, thank you for sharing your findings and helping others with your knowledge.
    Thermal paste is applied to fill the minor imperfections of mating surfaces.
    Maybe the thermal conductor wire has interfered with mating surface causing the larger gap to begin with?
    Thank you for your time and sharing with us your expertise.

    I have added Dow Corning 0.5mm thermal dissipative silicon pads to my APU in my PS4 Pro consoles, and the temperature has never risen above 122 degrees fahrenheit even after running the consoles continuously (24 hours/day) for over a week. Thicker thermal pads attenuate heat transfer, so as long as I've used thin pads to conform the APU to the heatsink, all turned out better than expected. I've used Dow Corning thermal pads in varying thicknesses from 3mm to 0.5mm (in 0.5mm increments), and the 0.5 does the trick.

      For long-term stability and high thermal performance and almost no pump-out nothing beats Honeywell PTM7950 phase change paste sheets AFAIK. there is also a paste form but the paste needs a curing time of 24 hours before attaching the heatsink. I don't know the specs from the Dow Corning pads.
      MX4/Kryonaut and many other popular pastes work great on desktop CPU's but are not very reliable on gpu's and direct-die with high temperature at 80'c and above. It starts with great day 1 temperatures and rapidly declines after a few weeks/months.
      Hard to spread high viscosity pastes works best on those situations, and that's the reason why pre-applied factory paste is thick.
      Thermalright TFX, Shin-Etsu 7921-5, IC Diamond, Maxtor CTG9 are some high viscosity pastes.

    I love this. Ive been looking at lapping and modding for thermal recently. One tip that I saw was that when you lap Jayz2cents , among others, suggests putting your sand paper on glass because its reliably a perfectly flat surface. You can also check your progress by putting grease on a piece of glass and putting that on your cpu/apu so you can visually observe the contact patch.

    A simpler method to improve cooling on these consoles are to increase the pressure between the heat sink and the CPU and add more/a lot of cpu paste to make up for any imperfections. I added washers between the clamp and screw head of the cpu bracket. Carefully tightened it. Now my system runs very quiet and my heat sink is very hot as it should be.

      My PS3 wouldn't work until I put washers, because there was a gap between the heat spreaders and the CPU. I'll try putting washers in my PS4, too. A Latin American guy said not to do it, so I didn't, but I'm having second thoughts, because it fixed my PS3 that wouldn't turn on. I've been using it daily for 2-3 months, and it's worked perfectly, so hopefully, the washers will fix my PS4 issues as well.

    Interesting. I wonder if there are differences between production runs or if large amounts of thermal paste is a bad thing.
    I covered the components around the die with UV curing soldermask and applied a thin coat of liquid metal on the die and also on the heat sink. Then I just reassembled it - that was it.
    Ever since I changed to liquid metal, the PS4 Pro never ramps up in fan-speed, it just blows hotter and hotter air out its back. (If I move the PS4 around too much or take it with me to go see somebody it has started to ramp up when under heavy load a few times the past few years I have had it - I suspect the liquid metal (galistan alloy) bond goes bad and crystalizes after a while - as it works perfectly after a clean-up and reapply job)

    • @NSC-Modz
      @NSC-Modz  3 года назад +5

      OMG, i just saw your comment right now, I'm sorry. Yes, liquid metal is a good thing here, because LM could help to fill the free space between the bended die and the cooler. Only thing is bad is that the APU Clamp will lose the pressure with the time, that's why LM will not work for a long time on consoles, because this cheapy clamps lose the pressure with the time. LM is best for computers because the coolers here get real fixed. But LM gets hard with the time, so this could help to fill the free space on the sides where the APU is bended... Cheers bro.

    I found your video after I saw many others about how to change the thermal paste, and find out that many had the problems of overheating after changing it, so I found this very useful in case I decide to change mine cuz it has started to sound a bit loud for my taste. (I bought my ps4 pro on the 2016).
    However I have a question: which way is better to put the thermal paste? You expanded it, but for other people is better just to put a drop and make pressure on it to let it expand by itself...is that and important difference?

    I had the same problem on my Intel 4790K CPU and it would skyrocket to 100C instantly when loaded and throttle, And that CPU was EXPENSIVE! after some testing finding out the footprint on the heatsink was even worse than yours because it would only touch a bit in the outer corners and leave the whole center not touching the cooler so I came to the conclusion to start grinding away on the CPU die because it seemed to overclock well even when that hot. I still had warranty on it so it was awkward af. but I had the footprint pretty much perfect with lapping it down to the copper layer. But the result? well it dropped 40 degree C and also keeping the TJ below 80 (with Prime95) even when overclocked to 4,8GHZ, this is the CPU I still use today. I guess the CPU was an over achiever held back by heat so it was not sorted out for separate high-end samples and ended up in my hands eventually

    Hello please i have a problem. Basically my ps4 slim fan stopped working for a while so I removed it recently. before I removed it, although the fan was bad I could play games by placing a standing fan on top the open cover of the ps4 . Currently without the bad internal fan the ps4 overheats(even though i still place the standing fan on it). Mind you the ps4 body temperature is low. It just doesn't want me to play any game. Could it be the thermal paste or I need to connect an internal fan for it to work. Becaue i replaced the thermal paste and it still doesn't work. It allows me to enter the game menu but the second i want to play the game the ps4 says its hot and switches off. Please help me idk whay to do again

      Hi Sounds like overheating of course. Did you check the pressure? The clamps should have good pressure, otherwise it will still overheat. And better use the Original Fan, it makes more airflow...

    I have a question, What if i replace the thermal paste and add a Thermal pad? Will it not work?

    • @NSC-Modz
      @NSC-Modz  3 года назад +2

      Yes, if you use the right thermal pad witch should be very thin and from graphite or the special ones from thermal grizzly, but if your APU is like on this Video, than it will be the same $h't

    Is this PS4 Pro still working quiet? I tried a lot of solutions but they only work for short time so I'm thinking about trying this.

    • @NSC-Modz
      @NSC-Modz  3 года назад +1

      Sure, it's my baby :) working quiet and if i like I can adjust the fan speed. Get Kryonaut thermal paste and check if your APU is Ok. After this video a lot people's told me about the same problem. If your APU in convex, than just lap the cooler. Lapping the APU is just for freaks 😅 so take care pls

      @@NSC-Modz Thanks for response. I just checked and my APU is also convex. My copper heatsink is not flat, it is wavy, so first I have to lapp it to flat and then brush the middle of heatsink. I have MX-4 instead of Kryonaut, do you think MX-4 could work long term or I should order Kryonaut?

    Terimakasih video yang sangat bagus. Ini membuktikan bahwa apu dan heatsink tidak menempel dengan baik . karena apu memiliki benjolan ditengah. Rasa penasaran saya terjawab karena setiap bulan harus mengganti thermal paste, padahal tidak kering.

      It's working fine till now, but if you don't like to do this, than put a fan on the back for the Vram chips, this will help a lot. Just watch my PS4 Ultra Quiet Videos. ✌️
