That line about "if you think we live in the land of free, you should be black like me" is one of the most profound lyrics in all of music- not only just country.
I’m glad that black music and genuine black experiences are finally making it into country music. There have traditionally been no more than 1-2 black singers at a time in Country. I don’t think they felt free to share their unique life experiences with a mostly white conservative audience, either.
Listen to the animal scream shame on you I love Rhiannon too. But I don’t consider her mainstream. Maybe I’m looking in the wrong places but the most mainstream thing I can recall about her was her stint on the show Nashville. I’ve never heard of War And Treaty. I’ll look them up!
@@kentstank Darius is an outlier. He already had a music career prior to transitioning to country. And his transition wasn’t a huge leap, IMO. Hootie and the Blowfish songs were already telling stories. I’m not trying to take any shine from him though and I know it’s still hard for him. But I can’t act like he didn’t have an advantage over the rest no matter how small/big the advantage was. Also, country to tends to prefer men so he had that going for him too. Think about it. Right now I can think of him, Jimmi Allen, and Kane Brown. And the most successful up until Darius Rucker would be Charley Pride. When it comes to Black women country artists though I can’t of any who’ve had the same level of success as those four men. If you can please let me know.
1st - Thank you for reacting to Micky, love love love her. 2nd- Its Guy-ton 🤣 edit: I just sent Mickey Guyton message on Twitter with the link to your reaction
8:30 to 10:32 dude that is exactly what I think!!! I’m a teenage Asian American male, but I see how so many human beings are treated and I can’t help but hope that the people in the future will one day take a moment to truly listen and learn about the hurt and division they cause in this world. I’ve just discovered you, but I respect you. And Mickey Guyton is amazing and so underrated SHE NEEDS TO BE HEARD!!!
Women in country music aren't played enough and she's a black woman in country music and she's not been done right! She just keeps doing her thing. She's FINALLY getting some recognition.
I loved Black like me. The March on Washington was today. I do not believe we have come very far since the first march. We need to keep protesting and marching. Silence is violence and it's been way to quiet for the last 20 years. We need songs like this. The path forward needs to pave over old ideas. I can tell you for sure in November another rich old white guy will get elected president. #BLM
I love this song, I can never put myself in a black person's shoes, but it kills me to see how they are treated. I can't see why they are they are treated so differently. I stand with him 10000%
By people posting her music on their channel's and sharing the messages is pushing and helping her be heard more . getting her the notice needed to help
Black Like Me reduces me to ugly tears every. single. time. Because, I KNOW there is still no real equality in this country. Don't come at me... I said what I said and I meant what I said.
Then how do you explain the fact that my parents supported the civil rights movement and raised me not to see people for the color of their skin, but for the context of their character? And I've raised my children the same way and they're now raising their children the same. That's 3 generations so don't say America hasn't changed if anyone hasn't changed it's the people in power not the majority of the citizens of America! The politicians and media get more money and more power by having us divided. Plain and simple! My son is mixed and he went through racism but it was the harshest from Black people sadly. So everyone no matter their race can be racist. And if you can go protest for any reason you want and riot, loot, etc you're definitely free!
So now that Ive listened to these songs. I am even more in love with her. Black like me is a VERY POWERFUL song and more people should listen to it! That song is beyond amazing and speaks for itself! LOVE IT!
Black Like Me is my favorite. ❤️ I’m mixed and I grew up in a tiny racist Oklahoma town. I felt it. You should watch Starr Andrews skate to Black Like Me. It’s Black Girl Magic all day. And the army band did Black Like Me too. I loved it.
BillyYSC, you are correct; we all know WHY country radio and all the other radio stations are not playing Mickey's song "Black Like Me." They hate the truth...can't stand hearing the truth. More power to Mickey for NOT remaining silent, and speaking her truth. ✊✊👍🏼👍🏼🤗🤗🙌👏👏☮❤🙏🏽❤LOVE, LOVE MICKEY.👍🏼👍🏼❤🧡💙💟💛💚
Just seeing this now. Her name is pronounced Guy..ton. She’s incredible. It’s a shame you don’t hear her on the radio. I got her album on I tunes. She’s amazing. On par with Carrie Underwood, in my opinion. She just performed on the Grammys. She did amazing.
Thank you thank you thank you for getting to her! Next try What Are You Gonna Tell Her. I'd love to hear your reaction as a dad. (BTW I got so excited that this popped up that I ran to this even though I don't have unlimited internet so you know this little white woman appreciates you 😂)
You asked a question, "Why isn't this getting more airplay," and it's because this incredibly strong and beautiful singer is black and she sings about REAL issues. She is in a predominately white and male music space and she is pushing a ton of boundaries that I 100% support, but the space she is in, is filled with racist shit heads. She deserves SO MUCH MORE and it hurts that people cannot even be empathetic enough to allow this to play on the country radio stations.
She should get so much more attention but not only does she do country music but she’s also black and if that wasn’t enough but she’s also a woman and country music seems to keep women and minorities of any race down! Hopefully she’ll make it I love all of her music
No matter how many times I hear this song it's definitely played non stop for me this songs brings every emotion out of me Lyric line in this song, I felt it, I love her, I absolutely love her, so I love the song I cry every time 😥😥😥
Mickey Guyton just released her debut album (after 10 freaking years of the runaround and BS from the powers that be!) It’s called Remember Her Name. Check it out and show her some support, folks! 🙏🏽
I just came across you by watching Mickeys song “What are you gonna tell her?” and I’m literally obsessed with you already 🤣🤣🥰😍 Definitely check out her song What are you gonna tell her!!!
She has given a voice to black people of all ages. I love her heart. I love watching the reactions of black people when they first her this song. Tears actually rolled down my face as I watched the host react when he played Black Like Me. BTW, her last name is pronounced Giton.
Mickey has taken on the world and took on the industry. She’s so strong and doing it with grace. Her songs speak to all we’ve gone through and she has been amazing for years and went unrecognized. I love getting to know her over the years and just inspired
Billy, OMG I was waiting for you to get to that part in Black like me. I knew, I just new. First time I've heard of this artist. I greatly appreciate her expressing her feelings and she isn't condoning hate for others who aren't like her and haven't had her experience which is so uncommon anymore! 💜💜 Beautiful voice, beautiful expression, and these lyric videos are powerful. If we take these expressions with love and respond with love we would move forward toward equality for all of us much faster than the foot stomping I'm better than you temper tantrums people keep having. We're becoming a nation of Hollywood style diva bullies who think that toddler attitude actually accomplishes something. This artist is very very effectively and beautifully and respectfully communicating her experience and I hope everyone can see their way to responding with love to her and others. Thanks for sharing Billy!
Billy, The first song about heaven down here, this was the first time I've heard it. You know I'm going to go see if there's any other videos of it and of Black Like me. Both of these are powerful songs. Black Like Me could include any race that isn't white. My oldest son is half white (me, I'm sicilian, german, dutch and cherokee) and half Cherokee (father was cherokee). As a child, he was often bullied and teased. Now my grandson, who looks just like him, is often targeted. Anyone who isn't white is ridiculed. It's time that we stop all the hatred towards each other. Skin is just a cover for what is inside of each of us. If we were all the same color, what a boring life we would live. I love diversity. It makes this world so much brighter and interesting.
Mickey Guyton has so many good Song's Somebody else will Better than you left me Safe forever love Heartbreak song Sister Nice Thing's Unbreakable Hold on Drunk and I miss you (duet with jimmie allen) What are you gonna tell her( I'm a grown man and she had me crying like a child)
It is so so so sad, that "Black like me" is such an important Song in 2020...like, i believe in the good in nearly everyone, but i know damn well that people are rotten and closed off, and most of them are like this just because they want to be that way....it is disapointing. I am not religious but my grandma was, so i was raised to have an open ear and mind for everyone, with love and forgiveness in my heart, and the highest hopes on my mind. It is not that hard...but still, all these people are out there, thinking they are better than others...how insecure does one have to be...
how can you get upset when I was 15yrs old I learned to not care what people thinks or says about me less stress & I'm 64yrs old now, LovE ya brother Billy
So glad to see another man have the same reaction I had when I heard this song along with her other music. Another person to check out is Rissi Palmer, she is another country singer who is African American and has put out some very powerful music as well this past year. Both of these artist have earned worldwide recognition so lets give it to them! Thank you for your video. BTW... her last name is pronounced Guy ton. I look forward to more of your videos.
I am white I’m stating this cause if I ever met anyone I treat the same no matter color of skin or religion and this song is why we shouldn’t need songs like this my generation has always treated people equally and this song was perfect one of my closest friends is. Black and he has my back more then any of my other friends why am I saying this cause it’s possible to love everyone and that’s what I try to do everyday is to love everyone hate is to much work it’s so much easier to love everyone
Both of these songs gave me chills. I wish they could get air play, because we NEED to hear these songs, especially on country radio. And you are right, we as a society are far too quick to disbelieve another's experiences if they don't match our own. 2020 has shown how selfish the US is. Thank you for introducing me to these songs!
She speaks the truth. This cycle of hatred and racism has been going on for far too long. I’m a white guy that loves black men and women and I see how this world works and I see what is truly going on in our country. The cycle will never end until we let go of the past and we stop passing down the hatred of each other from the past. I know that it’s not easy because I’ve dealt with my own hatred for certain people in life but we won’t be able to move forward until we let go. None of you are alone as long as we trust and believe in each other. We’re all here for each other. Don’t forget that.
Glad you got to her music, her first song released to radio was "better than you left me" waiting for you to see what she looks like, Carrie angle underwood might get some completion. Seen her in concert and meet her and I like how she says her name is pronounced "its like a guy who weighs a ton" lol
You should watch her Grammy performance of Black Like Me. It's awesome. I would also love to you get on the Maggie Rose bandwagon. Her newest album is coming out soon, and the songs Saint, and For Your Consideration are great! Not to mention a ton of others... Pull You Through and Change the Whole Thing come to mind.
So I know this video is a year old. But.....I am happy to see you react to this amazing song and amazing performer. Wish there were more reactions on here for her. I like country music but the country music community as a whole is not a very open minded one. Or a very welcoming one. So I choose to let them stay over there worrying about their wife cheating on them.
That line about "if you think we live in the land of free, you should be black like me" is one of the most profound lyrics in all of music- not only just country.
Cory Simmons , I felt that line, deep in my core. I can relate so very much
I’m glad that black music and genuine black experiences are finally making it into country music. There have traditionally been no more than 1-2 black singers at a time in Country. I don’t think they felt free to share their unique life experiences with a mostly white conservative audience, either.
Yes and especially in country. Love the Bridges EP by Mickey and looking forward to her (finally) debut full-length album later this year!
The lyrics alone took me to church. Deep
Man you need to listen to What Are You Gonna Tell Her from Mickey Guyton. Unreal. BYSE will enter the chat

She has a lot of good songs
I saw her performance on the ACM’s! I’ll be shocked if that song doesn’t go to #1.
Mickey is the TRUTH.
Yesss!!! That would be amazing
She doesn’t get as much shine as she deserves because she’s a Black Country artist. She’s lasting longer than others who’ve tried.
Rhiannon Giddens does good too and war and treaty.

And you are right, we as a society are far too quick to disbelieve another's experiences if they don't match our own. 2020 has shown how selfish the US is. Thank you for introducing me to these songs!
Her new album is Remember her name
You should heck out her song "What're You Gonna Tell Her"
She speaks the truth.
Im big fan of this song and this is what led me here: Nunca - Mayans MC Intro Song - the lyrics are king!
Darling her name is pronounced Guy Ton - she’s special isn’t she ❤️♥️
You should watch her Grammy performance of Black Like Me. It's awesome.
I would also love to you get on the Maggie Rose bandwagon. Her newest album is coming out soon, and the songs Saint, and For Your Consideration are great! Not to mention a ton of others... Pull You Through and Change the Whole Thing come to mind.
This is the best truth in song form
Her name is pronounced GUY TON
So I know this video is a year old. But.....I am happy to see you react to this amazing song and amazing performer. Wish there were more reactions on here for her. I like country music but the country music community as a whole is not a very open minded one. Or a very welcoming one. So I choose to let them stay over there worrying about their wife cheating on them.
