I used to do a lot of running when I was practicing boxing. When people asked me why I'd run as a fighter, I'd answer "I can beat those that outrun me and I can outrun those that beat me". A sword is weighty/cumbersome enough that it would at least slow them down a bit during running. Risking it by running away is probably the best move even if you've got all the other advantages. And the adrenaline of running for your life will get you the fastest dash you've ever run.
The problem with belts is when you try use them as wraps your pants fall down, and then you have two problems: the attacker and the being arrested for indecent exposure.

The crazy person with sword is usually the aggressor. Tyranth was walking backwards while Shad was advancing. That gave Tyranth more opportunities to attack. Crazy people tend to swing and slash more than stab or thrust, too.
I once knew a guy that swore up and down he could beat a tiger with just his fists. some people just massively overestimate their fighting capabilities.
At best it might retreat(tigers generally avoid needless danger) but tigers are super skillful fighters and if it feels threatened and wants to stand its ground its game over instantly
As a mental health nurse who has to physically intervene and restrain people on a daily basis. Most people significantly over estimate their own capacity and knowledge of Martial Arts. People who think they know how to fight often just watched too much KungFu Panda.
I love the realistic counterpoint represented by Tyrant. I understand the intent Shad had for the video, but, as he himself said in the beginning (not exact words): Swords were weapons of war for centuries because they work. They are made to kill. It's true that the skill to use them nowadays are lesser common, that most swords on the market are actually mall/wall-hanging trash (which is dangerous in its own way), and that most attackers seems to be katana lovers who got something wrong on the head, believe they know "the way of the sword", only to die after trying to stop bullets with a blade. That said, most regular people do not have agility, or would even have the presence of mind to react properly. Running IS the best option... rushing is just sooo risky, I'd say it's a bad advice in most circumstances, and that's why I believe Tyrants "ugh" face was all about. I love the channel, Shad is a great guy, what he said isn't Wrong per se, but I'd have the same face if was in Tyrant's shoes. One thing I learned the hard way is: expect people to misinterpret what you say, and act as if they have lower IQ than you first think they have. That's why, the condition Shad put, is very important to be stressed: Only do this if you have no way to run, and you do this to create yourself a chance to run... and expect severe damage. In the interaction, what I've seen was a dead Shad lying in pool of his own blood in the floor... not even a pyrrhic victory.
The random add hit at 1:09 and was the USAA add that starts with a drum-roll. I looked away for a moment so when you said "Usually a katana", I thought it was part of a bit.
I literally had half of this same debate with dad tonight, about spears with sword or dagger/knife. About how spear has length advantage but also has that useless range in closer where they can't do much. Basically comes down to get past that effective range (usually parry/deflect the first hit) then get in close where they're weapon length is actualy a problem for them.
In principle this is true, and I'm not saying you're wrong, but in practice it is very difficult. With spears you can quickly choke up on the handle to reduce your striking radius and get more control, and you'll probably be back stepping as you are thrusting very quickly at anyone trying to close the distance with a shorter weapon. But ya, if you are going to have to confront a spearmen and all you've got is a sword, it's literally impossible to do anything to him without closing the distance first, barring throwing things at him lol.
@@brighamfish713 Sword vs. spear is a very VERY hard losing matchup (though, there are some details to consider, like the exact type of spear and exact type of sword. A greatsword vs. a short spear is an entirely different matchup... But it is still "sword vs. spear"). It's not as impossible as unarmed vs. sword (or unarmed vs. spear), but it's still hard. However, sword and shield vs. spear flips this: The sword and shield has a MASSIVE advantage (I'd argue a bigger advantage then the spear does vs. the sword alone). With a shield, it is SUPER easy to protect against the thrusts of a spear, and get in range with the sword. Also, interestingly, in my experience, sword and shield vs. spear and shield is actually a fairly even matchup. This mostly comes down to the fact that it's somewhat difficult to use a decent length spear with only 1 hand. The spear user is often forced to "choke up" on the spear to use it effectively in 1 hand. So, sword and shield vs. spear and shield often ends up being more-or-less a thrusting sword vs. a slashing sword, with equal defensive benefits for both weapons from the shield (because the spear often loses the reach advantage because it's being used in 1 hand).
@@alexsawicki I couldn't agree more. Spears trump swords in most scenarios, it's just how it works. I was just acknowledging that the principle of closing the distance is sound, just good luck doing it and not getting skewered 3-4 times while doing it. It's a losing battle, but you can't win without getting in striking distance first.
@@brighamfish713I've seen HEMA instructors pull off the tip parry and close. Matt Easton has done it with a dagger. The problem is that in order to realistically pull that off, you need to be SEVERAL magnitudes more skilled than the spearman, and even then its not a 100% bet. So yeah most times the longer weapon wins.
Ahh the blessings of being American, where my sword defense training comes down to the 15-20 minutes a day of draw, and dryfire of my CCW, range trips on weekends, and some practical self-defense (mma sparing with blue guns) every other month. So grappling, sparring, and "fencing"(me +5 buddies watching Nick Thomas/False Edge vids and clumsily beating the hell out of each other with singlesticks and sabers in garages) fill the roles of fun, fitness, and fellowship.
Being someone with decades of martial arts and bladed weapon experience, great advice, good job and you're correct: someone well versed and trained in martial arts has a high level of respect for the capability of what their skill set can do and very very rarely goes "crazy" and starts hurting or killing people, simply because of the high degree of respect they have for their art or arts.
As several martial art masters/teachers have told me over the years practicing: in real life scenario, the best way to defeat/survive an attacker is to remove yourself from the flight. Noone will ever shame you for fleeing (if you can of course). The best way to defeat you attacker, is to survive him.
Took me a couple of years to earn my black belt in a traditional samurai martial arts school. Disarming an opponent wielding a knife or sword is part of the exam. Even though we train to disarm we are always encouraged to use a stick and go for the head eyes, throat or groin. So I totally agree with the principles shown here. Don’t risk your life unless you’ve trained for some years and know what goes into a fight.
Moving forward into the attack was also a thing soldiers learned in the world wars - artillery barrages usually hit at the front of your line and then move towards your rear lines, so if you are caught in a barrage, by moving forward you get yourself out of the barrage and away from its direction of advance. Of course, the artillery barrage is presumably providing cover for advancing infantry, so you'll need to be prepared to deal with them, but it does at least get you out of the shelling. And the advancing infantry probably isn't going to expect you to advance forward out of the artillery, so you may have a momentary bit of surprise on them, which may be all you need.
Idea for next video - I´ve heard there were practices that incuded use of cloack in sword fighting. Perhaps some of those could be aplied for modern clothing?
I Remember a video where the Police took a fire ladder to pin down a swordman who was trying to harm others and himself. When they pinned him down and sprayed him with a fire hose , they disarmed him and arrested him. Swords wielding attackers are no joke, and keeping distance was the strategy the police used to apprehend him.
Shad could you do a proper series on this? It's looking like a mix of Fiore's dagger and spear type of defence where you get past the point and grapple
We had this self-defense discussion in my iaido-course several times now. First rule: run! Be faster than the other guy! Second rule: close the distance if you can not run and smack his face/groin/whatever hurts most I would asume as Shad did: you are most likely to face a crazy guy with only anime and/or videogame knowledge at best. Usually most trained swordsmen also get a good training in when NOT to use/carry/draw a sword (which is usually in general public!!). So if someone attacks me with a sword?... i will try to find a long broomstick then!
My jujitsu instructor used to say, “There are two kinds of people in a knife fight; people who die quickly and people who die slowly.” This implies three things: 1, You are going to get cut. 2, Be the one who can survive long enough to get to the hospital. 3, The best way to survive a knife fight is to not be in one. That said I know a bunch of practical knife and sword defenses, and everything Shad and Tyrinth said is valid. Guys if you want to collaborate sometime just say the word.
Another point of you wrap a jacket around your arm and rush the attacker, Shad did say you will very likely be cut but failed to mention it’s likely you will have a tendon or tendons cut through. Grappling is going to be so much more difficult in this case. In these scenarios if you manage to break their attack you must then try to escape. The longer the fight goes on the higher the chance you will be injured more or worse unalived
These thought experiments are so important. Nowadays you have no idea what some nut will charge into a crowd with and it may come down to you and a few level headed fellow citizens in the right place at the right time able to charge and contain a psycho long enough for authorities to get there. These techniques clearly show you won’t “win” per se. Or at least I don’t consider having some fingers chopped off, maybe multiple tendons cut, winning. But I'd say if me and a few people grappled an attacker at a mall long enough to prevent them from running into an arcade? We didn't lose either. This practical and real demonstration is worth a thousand "bullshido" videos claiming to teach people to throw logs at an attacker. It shows the risks and doesnt claim yo be anything more than last resort. love the vids guys! keep up the good work.
My brother and I were playing pool at a bar and he didn't believe me when I told him that if you were fighting with a pool stick you are better off poking the person with the point than swinging it like a bat. In a bar you don't have room to swing it, poking is a faster strike with a small area to block, and the pounds per square inch increase with a smaller surface area.
Just the other day I had a case where a guy was attacking someone with a katana. It happens. And I agree with both Shad and the other guy. This is a good video.
This brings up a thought I've had for a while. I've seen a lot of examples of highly skilled wrestlers manhandling people. I wonder what kind of success they would have in sparring someone with a sword? My thought would be it might be more advantageous to have something to block and parry but the moment you could get inside and grapple you abandon your other things and grapple. Because I've seen a TON of examples of people being so out of their depth because they don't know how to grapple, even being highly skilled in other arts.
If they're slower to react, they were also slower to run away from... Grappling is great - what then? If you incapacitate them and/or get the sword off them, then perhaps best case you've lost a few teeth to a pommel, elbow or headbutt in the process. That's well below 50/50 though, any other result = you're dead. If they're still active and control the sword, you can't let go, can't run away, can't do anything else until you get one of those results. If they're inebriated, your odds are higher, but you've got to be drunk or on drugs yourself to test the theory!

What a mechanical take on a topic that often causes friction between commenters. Well done. You must be an engineer.
aniway defending against a machete should be different than against a sword. i did some tirè machet for fun is a martial art that study how to figth with a machete and if you follow their advice here against a macete you are going to get yourself in a very bad spot
Machetes are worse than swords TBH.
Cultural tendencies or you can buy a machete at a hardware store real cheap while a sword...
@@francescosanson7148 yes, but a chair is still an excellent defense against a machete. Particularly a well built rigid chair.
Unironically, the best advise in the videos is "If somebody's coming at you with a sword, then move." Now, most sane people would continue moving at a fast pace as far away as they could - but gurus you do you.
Tyranth: “What Shad is saying a bit ineloquently here…”
So humble..
Alternative title: An Aussie's Guide to Surviving the Streets of London
Tyranth couldn't be more uninterested with this video
I get the impression he he just being cautious and does not want misinform. which is good. to counter Shad's enthusiasm and potential lawsuits from idiots.
definitely what the first reply said, tyranth kept adding on to what shad was saying because the whole side discussion for being unarmed is just unlikely to work
I know why I would feel the same. I am tired of Shad making content based on criticising other content creators when he himself has stated his struggles with the channel, make the best content you can for your channel without relying on controversy and conflict to get clicks. Hollywood ok go after them it's not like they are struggling (e.g. rings of power) but overall focus on your own content and make that the best you can without relying on other content creators
The ultimate sword defense weapon running away!
Unless you have some other reason to defend your self or others. l recall several videos saying to GTFO unless you really need to be there.
@@shawn6860 yea. "Running away" is bulldcrap. The goal should be to arm yourself with something that is helpful or run to a place that can help you. Being aware of your surroundings is very important. Of curse having a "dispenser " is better but not everyone can have it.
3:00 far as sticks go, that is one of the best ones you could hope for against a sword. It even has a cross guard. :>
Tyranth: *is a highly experienced swordsman armed with arguably one of the best sword designs in history*
Shad: "Nah, I'd win."
Thank you this was awesome.
You guys are so helpful!
What a great video. Very interesting and informative. I did let out a cheer when Shad had the stick, thinking yeah the stick has arrived and thanks to Shad the stick is my new favourite weapon.
The moral of the story, don't edge.
Just the tip.
Ty's contempt for the whole premise of this video is clear.
Because its largely pointless. You're pretty much 100% f'ed in this situation. Even the treatises and the masters themselves basically said, "Yesh you can try this, it might work, but you're probably dead."
What about distractions? Like throw your keys in the attackers face to make them flinch before rushing them?
Pocket sand!
It's better than nothing I guess. And sometimes doing the wrong thing decisively is better than waffling and doing nothing at all.
I remember there was an incident in the UK where a knife wielding terrorist was fought off by a guy who grabbed a narwhal tusk, giving validity to the “grab anything” advice.
Tyranth had the “do not sue us” face in this video.
Guy has sword.
Pick up stick.
Guy: “Oh no! Shad’s ultimate weapon! I surrender!”
Meanwhile in America:
Self-defence = shoot the aggressor
Knife-defence = shoot the knifeman
Sword-defence = shoot the swordsman
Gun-defence = shoot the gunman

Love your content, after 26 years in the military I developed a keen interest in medieval warfare (Countries leaders at the front). Last ditch defense seems plausible but I love Tyrant's "I'm not fully convinced" stance on the issue. (Always the sensible counter to Shad) Keep up the great work
The chair is a mighty defense against the sword, specifically a metal chair
I used to do a lot of running when I was practicing boxing. When people asked me why I'd run as a fighter, I'd answer "I can beat those that outrun me and I can outrun those that beat me".
A sword is weighty/cumbersome enough that it would at least slow them down a bit during running. Risking it by running away is probably the best move even if you've got all the other advantages. And the adrenaline of running for your life will get you the fastest dash you've ever run.
Addressing street wraps was a top tier move.
Belts work too as wraps.
The problem with belts is when you try use them as wraps your pants fall down, and then you have two problems: the attacker and the being arrested for indecent exposure.
I think you had great advice as to Run Away, or poke with a stick. Though I till think drawing your onw weapon would be best, you might not have it. But the use of your jack and grapple wasn't bad either. Still I ONLY want to see that used in fantasy.
Interesting concept, I also like the fact that you explained knives and swords are Different.
The crazy person with sword is usually the aggressor. Tyranth was walking backwards while Shad was advancing. That gave Tyranth more opportunities to attack. Crazy people tend to swing and slash more than stab or thrust, too.
not really true. Even sow when they are near you they turn in to stabbing machines. Have seen enough Videos of such situations.
I saw the first bit and thought in my mind, "You never want to grab the blade."
6:13, Tyranth casually and politely Dissing shad XD
I swear Tyranth always goes out of his way to be contrary and negative.
Yea he does. He's super pretentious and comes off as an ass
Tyranth has such a pissed off face, its so funny 😂
As a mental health nurse who has to physically intervene and restrain people on a daily basis. Most people significantly over estimate their own capacity and knowledge of Martial Arts. People who think they know how to fight often just watched too much KungFu Panda.
Now this kind of situation would be the perfect opportunity to use the Joestar secret final technique to end the fight quickly.
6:46 I think this is just an excuse for a big, bear hug. I’m guessing Tyranth is not a hugger. 😂
Shad: Perhaps you should be holding a Katana in this video. Audience: yes, that would be cool. Annoyed Tyranth: Naur.
The random add hit at 1:09 and was the USAA add that starts with a drum-roll. I looked away for a moment so when you said "Usually a katana", I thought it was part of a bit.
Here is the usual full support for channel growth.
So if someone attacks you with a sword, you should give that person a hug? Understood.
Thanks for the worst case scenario teachings!
Thanks for this video, Shad! I'm sick of being accosted by highwaymen and not knowing how to defend myself, so this is a godsend.
It wasn't a sword attack incident but i can't help but recall the use of nature's pointy stick, the narwhal tusk.
love that shad continues using the word "edge" so much
6:02 Ahh, "Hubluhbluhbluh"--the ancient traditional battlecry of the What-were-you-thinking tribe.
Huzzah! We have arrived to witness the glorious skills!
Im English, I could _really_ *_really_* use some actual defence advice
Advice no. 1: Move to a country where carrying self defence isn't illegal.
Always have one pocket full of sand, and a spray bottle of jalapeno pepper juice
God does punish twice.
More cardio, more paranoia/identification of dubious types.
Finally, move. Even in country there should be some safer areas.
Move to America?
Thanks, guys!
Right before that first chin hit... I was nearly shouting at the screen WHERE'S YOUR MASK?!? Tyranth gave you quite a shave!
The graphics for showing points of contact are really cool!
so what i've learned is the best defences are the "nope" and "Run away" techniques they seem to be the most important to remain compatible with life
Idea for next video - I´ve heard there were practices that incuded use of cloack in sword fighting. Perhaps some of those could be aplied for modern clothing?
Pocket sand for the win
I Remember a video where the Police took a fire ladder to pin down a swordman who was trying to harm others and himself. When they pinned him down and sprayed him with a fire hose , they disarmed him and arrested him. Swords wielding attackers are no joke, and keeping distance was the strategy the police used to apprehend him.
i apreciate the discussion on the topic of : " NO you HAVE TO FIGHT ... so now what ? "
I expected this to be a mockery of some of their previous bullshido video examinations; expected to see Shad weilding a log 😂
Perhaps run and find some place where the sword wielder can be surprised - around a corner, or in a doorway.
Gotta love that the wear and tear on Shad's right pauldron makes a very angry frowny face
Pocket-sand baby. Check-mate LOL
SOMEONE: The pen is mightier than a sword.
SWORDSMAN: Wanna try parrying?
John Wicks has entered the room.
This is a much more likely occurrence these days than people realise. And we all know why.
Shad could you do a proper series on this? It's looking like a mix of Fiore's dagger and spear type of defence where you get past the point and grapple
We had this self-defense discussion in my iaido-course several times now.
First rule: run! Be faster than the other guy!
Second rule: close the distance if you can not run and smack his face/groin/whatever hurts most
I would asume as Shad did: you are most likely to face a crazy guy with only anime and/or videogame knowledge at best. Usually most trained swordsmen also get a good training in when NOT to use/carry/draw a sword (which is usually in general public!!).
So if someone attacks me with a sword?... i will try to find a long broomstick then!
My jujitsu instructor used to say, “There are two kinds of people in a knife fight; people who die quickly and people who die slowly.”
This implies three things: 1, You are going to get cut.
Great content
Going to use this as a manual on what to look out for as a crazy sword wielding attacker 😁
Because I've seen a TON of examples of people being so out of their depth because they don't know how to grapple, even being highly skilled in other arts.
consider that the attacker may be drunk or on drugs which might make a suprise grapple more effective since they'll be slower to react.
crack head crazy sword man is so scary, taser wont work, mace doesnt work... geez.. thats terrifying.
12:47 jump scare and coffee spew
2:42 you don’t want to get attacked with a dull blade either. It’d create a ragged wound that won’t heal well and will scar badly.
