As a mother of six adult children, i have one adult child who struggles with what is traditionally known as addiction... how much responsibility do we place on the people in his orbit or him? He is my child, i take responsibility for where he's at today, but i also recognise the choices he has made, and still makes. Im not going to waste his life blaming others. I'd rather spend my energy helping him find peace with the man he is!

I don't think she's saying that but that had a structured support program been in place at the time things may have been different. Effects are accumulative. Young developing nervous systems need to be given the resources to cope with the nervous system dysregulation that comes with instant fame, fans, media attention...etc They make enough money off these programs and subsequent sales so they are responsible for a sensible program of care for a period of time. If that was provided disaster may be averted and people may not reach for substances.

As Liam mentioned in his podcast, during xfactor, he was left, as a child , in a hotel room, told not to leave, WITH a fully stocked mini bar. This is what started his issue with alcohol (party for one, he called it!) and ultimately what then contributed to him losing his life. Had there been sufficient safeguarding from Syco, then this would never have happened in the first place. I know there are many contributing factors here, but maybe had he not been put in this situation, at such a young and impressionable age, things might have ended differently. More control measures need to be put in place for the underage contestants, as they need it most.

I think an important question to ask is WHEN Liam was first exposed to alcohol and hard drugs like crack and cocaine. If it was during his time on One Direction, especially in the early years when he was a minor, then YES, Simon Cowell’s company absolutely holds some responsibility here. Who was watching over these boys as they were travelling from country to country and hotel to hotel to make sure they weren’t being exposed to or offered stuff they should not have been?
They were exposed to way too much, way too soon, and Syco could've prevented A LOT of it. When you accept responsibility for someone else's child, it means ACTUALLY being responsible in the way that you care for them.

This care is supposed to come from your own care system, your beliefs, worldviews, people you confide in and open up to (professional or other) etc.... I've struggled with things under different employers, but I went to my wife and friends to talk things through. I wouldn't want the company I work for to provide some weird type of counselling for me. That would almost seem invasive.

That's true and I don't know if I'm mis-remembering but didn't dermot o'Leary spill the beans that the show was fixed for Katie to win - and then I think on the second occasion she complained about not getting the right music/ song and so the first time it was rigged for her to win and on the second go-around it gets rigged to see her to fail.
No one is responsible for taking drugs. Just the person who decides to take them. There are other solutions to fight personal issues. We all get educated about drugs. It is common for those in the movie and the music industry to take them. Sometimes they struggle with fame. Sometimes it is the working hours. Then, it could be other reasons or excuses. Addiction is real and there is help out there. It is easier to get help when you have the money to. Many people get clean. Many also give up. Stay strong! We have one life on this planet so we should make it count for something. Whatever happens to you, do not let that person dictate to your happiness. It is definitely easier said than done but it CAN be done ♡♡♡
I'm perplexed as to why Katie cant see how ridiculous it is to suggest that an entertainment company has a legal duty of care 14 years after they left the show. Sure, they were kids then, but now they're all grown and have to take responsibility for their choices. If you want to be famous, you should know what you're signing up for.

They don't have a legal duty, but they started this ball rolling. That show eats people alive and anyone with half a brain could clearly see, when he auditioned, Liam was different than the others. He was a lot more vulnerable. Many people have sacrificed their careers and walked away from those shows, in particular, Simon Cowell, because of what they...and he...do to you. Because of how bad they are.
I would argue that making the decision to go on the show in the first place is what gets the ball rolling. And yes, all reality / talent shows chew people up and spit them out. That's the nature of the beast and the risk you take when you sign a contract to be on a show like that. Liams parents would have signed that contract for him. I understand that emotions may be running high at the moment given the unfortunate events that occurred, but Katies argument is still ridiculous.
See the way it is that if they are continually successful making money having concerts across the world then it is them and their talent that got them there. But when it goes south like it did for Liam it is everybody else's fault. It's typical victimhood narration and people glorifying it

He was well enough to be a father. Not seeing your child everyday is probably why he went for more drugs. I look after my 2 year son every day and if that was one day taken away I’d be lost too.
He was in a different country to see his band mate play a concert and be on holiday with his girlfriend. He could have stayed home to be with his child if that’s what he was struggling with.
Two truths can exist. First, Liam potentially took his own life and that is his responsibility. Second, this show needs to take better care of its acts and treat contestants with greater care. There are changes that need to take place for these talent shows, but that issue may be separate from what is going on here.
I dont particularly care for the Talent shows and I never saw much of Howie Mandel's comedy act, but I am a big fan of him because he is always so introspective. He has dealt with mental health issues his whole life and he isnt afraid to talk about them in an attempt to destigmatize the topic. Hes a very smart man and he seems to more importantly be a very GOOD man and I am a fan of him because of that. Very glad to hear his voice on this very tragic topic

The problem with these arguments is that people today don’t take responsibility for themselves. It was obvious that Liam had issues long ago and he has a family to care for him. The parents have a duty to be an advocate for children in show business
Where are the families in all of this? The true duty of care should come from the family first and foremost. Liam Payne attempted X Factor twice. The thirst was real and he made it. Most bands have a 5 year life span. Everyone in the industry knows that.
If Liam Payne had died in the same circumstances at 41 or 51 or 61, would anyone still say this is the fault of a man he hadn't worked for in nearly 10 years? How much time has to pass before everyone would agree he's not responsible? The reality is, the only people who have responsibility for his wellbeing are his current management, his loved ones, the hotel staff, and himself.
No company has a duty of care for an employee 14 years later. The only person responsible is himself. He knew he had a problem with his mental health and addiction and he has a duty of care for himself to be signed into a addiction centre which he could have very easily done so within hours of him entering into his breakdown. He had this privilege due to the millions he had in the bank unlike the majority of people who have to rely on private healthcare or the NHS which takes months and months of waiting on a list. But Liam decided he was going to take a cocktail of lethal drugs instead which he knew would make his mental health a lot worse therefore the responsibility was his and his only.
I don’t think Piers exhibited much active listening. Katie expressed a couple of times it wasn’t her choice to go on the show. I wished Piers would have explored that subject and asked her directly who’s choice it was

They make enough money off these programs and subsequent sales so they are responsible for a sensible program of care for a period of time. If that was provided disaster may be averted and people may not reach for substances.

As Liam mentioned in his podcast, during xfactor, he was left, as a child , in a hotel room, told not to leave, WITH a fully stocked mini bar. This is what started his issue with alcohol (party for one, he called it!) and ultimately what then contributed to him losing his life. Had there been sufficient safeguarding from Syco, then this would never have happened in the first place. I know there are many contributing factors here, but maybe had he not been put in this situation, at such a young and impressionable age, things might have ended differently. More control measures need to be put in place for the underage contestants, as they need it most.
When they are young, it's the parent's fault. When they are an adult, it's their own responsibility.

I think an important question to ask is WHEN Liam was first exposed to alcohol and hard drugs like crack and cocaine. If it was during his time on One Direction, especially in the early years when he was a minor, then YES, Simon Cowell’s company absolutely holds some responsibility here. Who was watching over these boys as they were travelling from country to country and hotel to hotel to make sure they weren’t being exposed to or offered stuff they should not have been?

This care is supposed to come from your own care system, your beliefs, worldviews, people you confide in and open up to (professional or other) etc.... I've struggled with things under different employers, but I went to my wife and friends to talk things through. I wouldn't want the company I work for to provide some weird type of counselling for me. That would almost seem invasive.

No one is responsible for taking drugs. Just the person who decides to take them. There are other solutions to fight personal issues. We all get educated about drugs. It is common for those in the movie and the music industry to take them. Sometimes they struggle with fame. Sometimes it is the working hours. Then, it could be other reasons or excuses. Addiction is real and there is help out there. It is easier to get help when you have the money to. Many people get clean. Many also give up. Stay strong! We have one life on this planet so we should make it count for something. Whatever happens to you, do not let that person dictate to your happiness. It is definitely easier said than done but it CAN be done ♡♡♡

I'm perplexed as to why Katie cant see how ridiculous it is to suggest that an entertainment company has a legal duty of care 14 years after they left the show. Sure, they were kids then, but now they're all grown and have to take responsibility for their choices. If you want to be famous, you should know what you're signing up for.
They don't have a legal duty, but they started this ball rolling. That show eats people alive and anyone with half a brain could clearly see, when he auditioned, Liam was different than the others. He was a lot more vulnerable. Many people have sacrificed their careers and walked away from those shows, in particular, Simon Cowell, because of what they...and he...do to you. Because of how bad they are.

I would argue that making the decision to go on the show in the first place is what gets the ball rolling. And yes, all reality / talent shows chew people up and spit them out. That's the nature of the beast and the risk you take when you sign a contract to be on a show like that. Liams parents would have signed that contract for him. I understand that emotions may be running high at the moment given the unfortunate events that occurred, but Katies argument is still ridiculous.

He was well enough to be a father. Not seeing your child everyday is probably why he went for more drugs. I look after my 2 year son every day and if that was one day taken away I’d be lost too.
He was in a different country to see his band mate play a concert and be on holiday with his girlfriend. He could have stayed home to be with his child if that’s what he was struggling with.
Two truths can exist. First, Liam potentially took his own life and that is his responsibility. Second, this show needs to take better care of its acts and treat contestants with greater care.
There are changes that need to take place for these talent shows, but that issue may be separate from what is going on here.

I dont particularly care for the Talent shows and I never saw much of Howie Mandel's comedy act, but I am a big fan of him because he is always so introspective. He has dealt with mental health issues his whole life and he isnt afraid to talk about them in an attempt to destigmatize the topic. Hes a very smart man and he seems to more importantly be a very GOOD man and I am a fan of him because of that. Very glad to hear his voice on this very tragic topic

The problem with these arguments is that people today don’t take responsibility for themselves. It was obvious that Liam had issues long ago and he has a family to care for him. The parents have a duty to be an advocate for children in show business
Where are the families in all of this? The true duty of care should come from the family first and foremost. Liam Payne attempted X Factor twice. The thirst was real and he made it. Most bands have a 5 year life span. Everyone in the industry knows that.

No company has a duty of care for an employee 14 years later. The only person responsible is himself. He knew he had a problem with his mental health and addiction and he has a duty of care for himself to be signed into a addiction centre which he could have very easily done so within hours of him entering into his breakdown. He had this privilege due to the millions he had in the bank unlike the majority of people who have to rely on private healthcare or the NHS which takes months and months of waiting on a list. But Liam decided he was going to take a cocktail of lethal drugs instead which he knew would make his mental health a lot worse therefore the responsibility was his and his only.
