I love the idea of making my own etudes, exploring what interests me. It's a very liberating way to approach growing as a musician.

Thanks. You inspire me. I would do well to make etudes for myself from some of your vids, especially the shorts. I am not currently interested in improving my piano skills. What I would be studying is composition. Maybe someday. For now, plenty of other rooms to build in my musical house.

I am a recent subscriber and I feel compelled to tell you just how thankful I am that I found your channel. Perhaps it is that we have similar musical sensibilities but of all the music guidance videos I have watched over the years, yours have been the most instructive. Obviously you have strong compositional abilities in your own right but your approach to transmitting your knowledge is quite unique. I look forward to learning much more from your videos. All to say, thank you and I wish you much success with your channel.

Re the literal meaning of the word 'etude' it may further assist our understanding of the form that it comes from the French, meaning 'study'. I presume many people would already know this, but I find it worthy of note because so many musical terms are Italian, yet this is not. Why - because of Debussy and Chopin - sure, but why did they use 'etude' instead of an Italian term? :-) Such background information might be interesting. Just a suggestion, :-) love the videos, thank you!

How can I know the modes better? Thank you.

modes are scales. begin by fully understanding and playing all the major and minor scales. then begin exploring the differences between those conventional sounds, and the sonorities of each mode. a subtle change, like having a Flat 7th (mixolydian) or Raised 4th (lydian) has real musical impact. Each mode suggests certain chord types. Depending on your favorite type of music, you may use the modes differently. Jazz uses them one way, Ambient Orchestral another. finally, i'll say it's very helpful to sing the scales and mode, to internalize the variety. this is a long process.
