Music Visualization: Mute Math - Reset (HD)

- One day I heard the song Reset by Mute Math and I liked it a lot. Then I thought 'Hey, I'm learning After Effects! Why not make a music video?'
This video took me a few days to make. However, this wasn't nonstop working. I'd put in a few hours every day. I am quite proud of it, as it is one of the few videos I have actually finished. There is no plot, no anything; just shapes and colors to the beat of the music.
[TECH STUFF]
Rendering took 3 and a half hours in AE CS4. When it was done, however, the file size was 25.5gb. I couldn't do much with a 25gb file (I couldn't even watch it without lag), so I used DivX to compress it to 164mb with absolutely no noticeable quality loss (how DivX does it, I don't wanna know...). That's about 21 times smaller, for all you math enthusiasts (no pun intended).
Just sit back and enjoy the ride :)
UPDATE:
A number of people have requested that I offer download links to the video, so if you go over to Vimeo you can download it from there:

Growing up in the 70s and 80s, and not holding much hope for today's music----I found Mute Math, and am happy to see that true talent still exists!!! They are awesome!
I would put this song in a movie scene where the protagonists arm themselves with weapons and do a very difficult mission, but for them this task is child's play. Everything goes clean and fast......
I'm not sure I can thoroughly explain how much i love this. It's not just those weird squiggly lines that show up if you do this sort of thing on iTunes. This is truly art. I've always love Mute Math and this song, and even though some of these things seem like they might be simple to some people, the way it's put together is brilliant.
Hey, I must say that this is one of the most FANTASTIC things I've ever seen. I love the movement of the circles, and I like the lines. Wonderful job!
That is basically what happened with me. I was at a bus stop and I was listening to this song, and I didn't close my eyes but I started to "ignore" my vision (daydream) and this is what I ended up seeing, so I made a video.
I am absolutely, unconditionally, in LOVE with your mind.
♥
forever changed, but I am so grateful! ☺☻
This video is genius. You are so right about other videos and the lack of mood setting. I often search for my own visuals. Whenever I tell people "I can see the music"...they think I've gone batty. It's good to know there's a fellow artist who shares in my understanding of cojoining music and visuals.
Basically, this video is now a big part of the way I live, more or less. This video means so much to me. It's really amazin how you model what we're hearing visually. The video taught me many things I think, including attention to detail, and listening to tracks over and over, ...more or less. idk XD It's so inspirational.
totally epic ending to this. love the rewind there, totally fits the reset nature of the song
WTF?!! You have a video wit almost a million views?!! You keep suprising me bro. This is dope. So Trippy!
I hope you make more of these...this is exactly the kind of thing I see in my mind when I listen to music.
Wow man. I'm impressed. Thanks for "taking a bullet" us! It was incredible in HD.
that was insane.
one of the best music visualizations i've ever seen. and one of my favorite songs too!
i like this a lot...i love mute math and i feel as though you did a good job of having everything go with the beat of the music...it kept my eyes glued to the screen!!! lol
This shit was fucking awesome, it had me straight vibin'. Oh and when the beat stopped for a second I was like " whoa this is intense ! " keep up the good work.
i can not believe DivX compressed it that much! thats amazing!
Very unique, very nice... you've gotta start it and stick with it. Worth it.
this reminds me of a dream i had, which i was thinking about last night, and all of a sudden, boom, this video is here. the dream was almost identical to whats going on in this video, accept the background was white, and all the visuals were black. i just started listening to mutemath again too a few days ago haha. eerily awesome. great job man.
Very very nice! One of the best songs Mutemath made!
video is AMAZING . I wasn't expecting the video to be much, but it was AMAZING
This video deserves more views
that s amazing dude, the clips is running during the new year fest , you kick ass.
geatings from Paris !
This video literally blew my mind.
it jumps out at you just like 3D. awesome!
love this song and good job the visual effects!
you sire is a true genius. this was _the_ best Music visualization i've ever seen
This is a really creative music visualizer and I like how it matches the music. iTunes doesn't usually have that much creativity and correlation with the music
Dude, this is a really cool video! I wish there was more stuff like this.
Ey man. You've made some great choices here. Music. Art direction. Timing. You've inspired me to dabble into After Effects.
Wow.. This is AWSOME! I love mute math's songs, but not a lot of people post them up on youtube, so..
anyways good work!
X)
Really really fire. I hope you’ve taken your talents to the next level at this point
great work dude,
i appreciate the effort you put in to make a lot of people space out!
Holy crap, this was some veeeeery good stuff... good for you and thanks for sharing your creative talent
This is absolutely incredible.
This is pretty sick. When I listen to music and close my eyes I often see abstract images, shapes and colors like this in my mind, so this is amazing to me.
It's funny, several years ago when I sat down and tried to nail down what I saw when I listened to this song, a story unfolded in my mind, instead of abstract colors and shapes. I wound up writing that story and publishing it for the Amazon Kindle as "The Moon"
good work man, better than what I expected! Props!
This is fantastic to watch n listen when having a good smoke and/or on LSD Acid. It's two unusual experiences, I love it.
@liquos nice job on the visuals man!
Watching this 5 days before the year 2020 and I will be back many times after. lol
Wow your so cool
Cheerz, I try best I can. lol
Darren é muuuito fera, pra mim o melho baterista de todos
i watched this video stoned with my buddies its AWESOME. i love this video THANK YOU
Amazing job :)
I love this song and the work you did with the visualizations. Incredible.
Yo Liquos, u still alive?
Yup! Still around. I just don’t make RUclips videos anymore. Maybe I’ll come back to it one day.
@@liquos ight i'll just keep you in the book anyway
that was an unbelievable experience
watched it all the way through it was worth it :D thanks for making this!
lol u had me scared for a second, this is my all time favortie video on youtube
Crazy awesome visualization. The drums went ham on this song XD
dude, srsly, this is such great work. To watch this when you are so fucking wasted like this... awesome.. you have created life. gz!
good song choice reset is sick. went perfect with your video.
Looks great! The song sounds like a really long radiohead intro, which is fine by me.
holy crap... badass vid liquos! i think id die if i was high though. that water ripple part was tight, make some more vids!
it was a different experience ... thank you dear liquos... you made my highness even higher :)
Drum solo :D was epic
MMO-Champ sent me here
Lovin it.
@Reketh Funny thing is, I'm not a master at all. I just got real inspired by this song, and a great idea can often trump great skill. After Effects is one of those programs with lots of "make it cool" buttons. In a program like 3ds max, you may know how to make a simple scene with boxes and lights after a week of learning, but in After Effects you press 5 buttons and everything looks cool.
@thegalsnextdoor That effect was achieved by using a particle emitter (trapcode particular, in this case). It emits particles that travel left and change color and size as they "age". This makes a nice "trailing effect". I also added turbulence displacement, which basically makes the particles jiggle and wave around after a being alive for a certain time. I then duplicated this trail layer to create two trails overlapping one-another.
Thursday afternoon Monday morning podcast OVAH HYEAHHHH
This is absolutely awesome... Great work!!!!
Dude this is amazing! Props. Mutemath would love this
I really like this, man. Great job.
So this was amazing. Simply amazing.
You're amazing. Really great work, I love it. (I'm learning After Effects too and I now how difficult is, so I repeat: great work!)
Awesome... I really like the change after 3:53
Sweet stuff. Did you use the videocopilot to learn the linking audio to video expression? Sweet quality, your computer is pretty beastly to render in that quality.
this is so fucking awsome.
Trippy stuff, love it, and i really would love to have your ae skills!
Big up!
Great visualization!! Good job
Royal epicness!
thank you for the video, seriously appreciate the work put into this
You sir, are badass. I would love to see some more of your work if there is any.
breathtaking!
This is an amazing job, you have so much potential !
can't wait for a part two
PERFECT INTRO
Absolutely brilliant animation to an equally brilliant song. I actually caught myself saying "Whoa!" out loud at some point, that's how impressive this was.
Reminded me of the video to "Sound Mirrors" by Coldcut a little.
Why not try Drill'n'Bass or smth like that? Stuff by Venetian Snares is "liquid" enough to base a non-repetitive animation on it. Gosh, we need pople like you here in Estonia.
Keep up the excellent work, mate!
@themegapepita Yeah, go ahead. And this song is by a band called "Mute Math" - it isn't really related to math at all, unless you count any of the expressions used in it.
@liquos I look very much forward to it. I project your video on my wall as an exhibit each time have guests in my apt. and they all are very impressed!
I really wouldn't care. I didn't make this so I can show off my editing. I made it because I liked this particular song a lot and wanted to do something more with it. This is why "using a free song" (as many people have suggested to me) wouldn't work.
I love how people see pretty pictures and think there's no math involved. Guys, even if the author of this video didn't design all of these effects, there's some pretty serious math involved. Even just blurring effects are based on Gaussian distribution. The first patterns looks like a map of the regular cartesian coordinate plane to a wave function... which then formed standing waves... and that oscillating bubble toward the end? How is this not math?
Dude, this is super trippy!!
Davvero ben fatto! Complimenti!!
I've always loved videos synced to music. I think the problem with most music videos today is that they don't have any synchronization or "mood" with their music. Whenever I listen to music, I'd occasionally get really solid idea for a video. The problem is that I don't have a camera
I watched your video and I thought it was quite well done. It had some really great camera angles.
I'm not much Mute Math fan though; in fact, I only found out about this song from a youtube comment on another song
NO words!!
@liquos oh i just remembered session, heard that track looooong time ago. THanks for reminding me again haha
great work man this is awesome :)
nice video liqous... but my question is... why did u use divx to compress when you have sorenzo squeeze?
I agree with the first statement. Maybe contact mutemath? have them use this as their real video. It will be really cool cause i mean it's an instrumental. So a video made with only different color of lights would be awesome.
Amazing stuff! I got chills.
If I wanted to learn how to use After Effects (and I'm already very familiar with Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign) what books or websites would you recommend to start learning with?
Hey, I love your visualisation. Do you mind if I use a section of it.
I've put a link to your video and given ou full credit to the visualization.
thx
the whole things a Giant Mind fuck, And its so Amazing! Dude you did a Fantastic job.
This is AWESOME!
Nice.... no words...
Nice work! Very well done.
my fav part is from 2:24 - 2:56.. i wish i knew how to do this for my beats. I cant even find courses or tutorials to do exactly this. But, the whole vid is a dime.
dude, nice work. Which programs are u using? Doing some work in that area myself.
Glad you liked it.
Wonderful
i love the transition from 2d to a 3d wall, that is so sick
heartbreaker sires some amazing horses:)
This helped me through calculus. Thank you.
Man I remember when you posted this to the Wiremod forums (or I stalked my way to your RUclips from the Wiremod forums). Still blows me away.
So amazing track and video!!! awesome!!!
I get it, awesome work.enjoyed the journey
I love you for the video. AMAZING, just amazing.
