  • Our hike began on a clear, sunny morning as I parked in a free layby in the charming village of Hollinsclough. My 11-year-old son, Kayden, and I were ready for an adventure. As we set off, the village's quaint atmosphere enveloped us, and we soon passed a delightful little café, its windows offering tempting glimpses of warm pastries, cakes and fresh coffee.
Continuing on our path, we made our way past a farm on our right, where we were greeted by the curious gaze of cows in the nearby fields. Their inquisitive nature added a touch of rural charm to our journey, but they posed no issue as we trekked by.
Our ascent up Hollins Hill was invigorating, rewarding us with breathtaking panoramic views. The landscape unfolded around us, a patchwork of rolling hills and valleys painted in various shades of green. We took our time along the top of Hollins Hill, savoring the scenery and snapping some photos to capture the moment.
As we descended Hollins Hill, we followed the route that led us past Stoop Farm. Here, the fields stretched out before us, dotted with wildflowers and sheep, adding to the picturesque setting. The tranquility of the countryside was soothing as we made our way to the base of Chrome Hill.
The climb up Chrome Hill presented a bit of a challenge with some enjoyable scrambling sections. Kayden relished the adventure, and we encouraged each other up the steeper parts. Reaching the summit felt like a real accomplishment, and we took a well-deserved break to enjoy some refreshments. The view from the top was absolutely stunning, offering a 360-degree vista that left us in awe. We captured a few more photos, the landscape sprawling out behind us.
Our descent from Chrome Hill was steep and required careful navigation. Originally, we planned to tackle Parkhouse Hill next, but Kayden’s knees were beginning to feel sore. So, we opted to bypass it, choosing instead to take a more direct path back to Hollinsclough.
On our way back, we encountered a large herd of cows being moved into a field. We paused, giving them the space they needed and watching as the farmer expertly guided them. This gave us a chance to catch our breath and take in the sight of the rolling hills and open skies.
A delightful surprise awaited us when we spotted a low-flying Apache AH-64E helicopter. The sound of the rotors and the sight of them maneuvering gracefully above was truly thrilling, a moment we won't soon forget.
Once the herd of cows had passed, we continued our hike back to the road, our footsteps leading us back into Hollinsclough. The village welcomed us once more, its peaceful charm undisturbed by our adventure.
Back at the car, we were both ready to head home, our bodies tired but our spirits high. The drive home was filled with chatter about our hike, the stunning views, and the unexpected excitement of seeing the helicopter. A well-deserved shower awaited us at home, a fitting end to a day filled with exploration and bonding.
