About 10 years ago I was bitten by a small red ant, just below the belly button. I can tell you that the pain was excruciating,, I was out hunting in California, Capay Valley and I had a two and a half hour drive back home, by the time I got home pus had collected at the bite, the area felt hot and had a red ring around it, I felt pain radiate to my arms and neck. The pain lasted several days, and finally went away 3 months later, because hot water would trigger the bite site. I don't know what kind of ant species it was because I smashed it, but it was red and not very much bigger than a garden/ house ant.

I can think of some politicians you should use as specimens....Great video, very interesting and you do a good job explaining things. Definitely subscribing and hitting the bell. I had no idea these ants existed. Are the very aggressive, like the fire ant? Sure hope not..lol

From my understanding they can be a bit aggressive. Though I dont think anywhere near as aggressive as Fire Ants thankfully

They love sand, they are larger than fire ants and pure red, no black. They thrived in the Tule river in California. I been stung on the pinky toe once and imagine just kicking the coffee table for 30 minutes strait.

Sounds like one of the worst spots to get bitten!

I can’t imagine eating one live ant, much less 250-400.

Oh yeah. We encountered these camping in Mammoth valley. We call them the "piss ants" because you can smell them and they make audible hisses amd threats when they see you. However, they are not that eager to fight. Just go around them.

Wow. Really amazed. Having lived in my state for over 50 years I still come across animals and insects that I hadn't seen. Didn't know the horned frog was that far west nor did I know about the ants venom. Guess I can say I learned something today!

Yea! We have 4 species of Horned Lizards in Cali. Most are found in the south, but the Pygmy Short-horned is all the way in the Northern most counties

@BiologistDillon That's cool. Like I mentioned, I am still seeing things in Texas that I never seen before. I used to get out in the woods and lakes and amazed of the things I still find that are native.

Just fyi Florida harvester ants are the most toxic of the bunch but at least they aren't super aggressive.

Totally. I think the paper shown here had them at an LD50 around .12 or so. Crazy how potent their venom can be

@DillonTheBiologist This was a great video , I knew about Red Harvester and other harvesters ants but I never heard of the California harvester ants prior to your video . That being said, I messed up my comment it was supposed to be a reply, lol.

Maybe they have a near-death experience? Those that do have them[NDE] have strange experiences. Maybe they are so worn out that they really approach death with the addition of so many ants?
BTW Harvester ant stings are very painful, ask me how I know.
I live in the desert SW the ten year drought seems to lead to fewer ant colonies as there used to be 5 ant hills on my 1 acre property, now there maybe one.

It seems similar to a controlled Near-Death experience based on the reports. Wish I knew more but there doesnt seem to be as much information on the interwebs about the mechanics specifically.
