I've always read Corin's surname as "Nemets". I suppose he's a Canuck with either Czech or Slovak ancestry. His surname would mean "German".
And yes, his real name does sound vaguely more alien (in English at least) than the name of his Kelownan-born character. :-)

Absolutely. He wasnt a bad character by any means, just... the least good, if anything. And that tells volumes about how good this show was.
There must be an alternate universe where he became an important and vital part of the team long-term. In the 9th season episode where they brought back Martouf and Dr. Fraiser, a Jonas comeback would have been nice, too.
I think if SG Universe ran one more season they could have brought him back... since his homeworld was involved in SGU S2.

Unnatural Selection is exactly the dark O'Neill story that I was talking about. Jack's sarcasm and affect of ignorance was always a suface-level element of his character. Underneath that facade, he was always very ruthless in his willingness to let the ends justify the means.

I love how it came to bite him in the butt when Fifth became their worst nightmare and main antagonist of the galaxy in S8. Him and Reese's case were certainly a food for thought.

    • @Aurora-313
      @Aurora-313 9 месяцев назад +23

I think O'Neill's leadership and style are best summed up by this exchange:
O'Neill: If you don't do what [the Trust] want, they'll kill ya. If you don't do what WE want, we'll let 'em.
Kinsey: That's as good as firing the bullet yourself! I thought Stargate Command didn't do that sort of thing!?
O'Neill: *nonchalant* Well... we're under new management.
I think some of my other favourite episodes with O'Neill's darker side on display are when he teams up with Maybourne. Either Chain Reaction or 48 hours.
Chain Reaction because any opportunity to screw with Kinsey is welcome. And the audacity of pointing (absolutely not waving!) a gun at the man in his own house with Congress down stairs is *chefs kiss*.
But 48 Hours shows how lethal, stealthy and terrifyingly effective he is when the chips are down. Classic case of "beware of an old man in a profession where men die young". The power is out for maybe... 5 minutes? And he takes out every single guard in a rogue NID compound to interrogate a Gou'ald prisoner.

Jack is jack. He has done some nasty things in his past and learned the mission comes first. He has operations where only a few came back and there was a time he crashed in the middle east and had to survive through the pain. He knows that dark part of him and it served him well. But he doeesn't want to be that person, but he knows for his team to survive, he has to be that person, to make those decisions.

I do think it was a step-down from the peaks of SG-1, but considering the context, it was still a good move and was well done. It didn't drag the show back up to those peaks, but it kept the show from the dregs that you'd expect a 9th and 10th season in a show (even one with as much potential as the Stargate) to be delving into.

One of the strangest bits of foreshadowing I saw involving SG-1's end was in interviews both Browder and Black having just gotten to deal with the Command pilot were hoping to not jinx the show by being the final reason to cancel it. As said, they had just finished wrapping up Peacekeeper Wars at the time, so that sting was very fresh.

The hard truth is the SyFy network doesn't let a show live longer than five years. After five seasons comes the renegotiation for contracts, and SyFy's stance is "We could use the same money for a new show rather than spend more keeping up an old one..." and the show gets the ax.
Mind you, the first five seasons of SG-1 was on another network.

    • @Grivehn
      @Grivehn 9 месяцев назад +6

Also agree. They managed to make them really threatening and properly powerful. What they offered were no tricks and falsehoods. For all intents and purposes, the Ancients as well as the Ori are gods from the view of the mortal realm. Especially to a galaxy full of medieval farmers.
Even the Asgards said they only got a glimpse of the Ancient's knowledge and thats what propelled them forward into the galactic powerhouse they became.
Bit of a shame their 3rd season was cut short and made into a movie instead, but even that was still a fine send-off for that arc.

@@BogeyTheBear Yes, I pretty much lost interest in the Ori after a couple of episodes because there was no logical way for SG1 to win. They were fighting effectively the Old Testament god but pretending they weren't so the Christian fundys wouldn't get mad. Then all that stupid Merlin stuff and the show just completely gave up on being sci-fi at all thematically. It had to be dumb McGuffin to turn it around and let SG1 win without really earning it.

SG is truly something else. Your videos helps me to re-live a lot. Thank you
Roland's Stargate movie sparked my interest in science fiction, Egypt, and space. I would watch it repeatedly on VHS at my grandma's house, trying to identify star constellations in newspapers in order to find an address while describing everything to her, big fan of scifi.
Then Stargate SG-1 came along, and my mom and I would binge-watch the five episodes we had recorded on VHS throughout the week every weekend. I even resisted watching the episodes right after school, saving them to watch later with her.
Years later, after spending three hours talking about Stargate SG-1 on a first date at a bar with a certain girl, I knew she was the one. Eight years later, we're still going strong, and we're getting married soon after having our own adventure going to unknown by moving from Europe to New Zealand.
I already bookmarked SG-1 for re watching thanks to your videos. I'll have SG theme song on my wedding party.
If i ever could meet anyone from the cast, i would really want them to know and to thank them for being my guides trough everything nice in my life.

I honestly wasn't aware of any concerns around changes to the cast in the later years. IMHO, the show had done such a good job evolving that it seemed totally natural to expect fresh blood. Like in the real world somebody like O'Neil is either going to get promoted or retire, he wouldn't be going forever. The fact that we knew he was off doing other things made it easy to say goodbye and welcome the new cast - especially when they were coming from another excellent sci-fi show.

One thing that gives me a little hope is the Fallout show, it is essentially in the same place as stargate right now, a established and cherished canon that the best way to continue the story is to just continue the story. In addition, Fallout does not require you to bring back older characters, it would help, but is not required, the universe itself is a character, same with stargate. Since its getting high claim for continuing the story amazon might be looking for another series to fill out that mantle. Oh look you own stargate!

I did however, somehow think Commander Shepherd and Jack O'Neill were either somehow related or shepherd was the "passing of the torch" from Richard Dean Anderson. At this point though, I knew that Jack was starting to age.. and he had lived through so many things. (ancients knowledge downloaded into his head, aged to like 100 years, been cloned and your clone destroyed planets, alien drug-bracelets that made you like superman. Basically, he's woken up one day as a clone and ends up sacrificing himself, another day he wakes up as a teenager and then apparently just gets to live out his life as a teenager with 100 in all stats.) He deserved retirement at that point. What else is there left for him to do? Become god and recreate the universe? Oh for crying old loud...

For a "Series Finale" it doesn't wrap up anything and leaves a feeling of wanting more without the feeling of closure. So I can understand why some people dislike it. For me personally, it is one of the best episodes of the series and was a great season 10 finale and an pretty high on my personal favorites list. Thankfully, we did get the Ark of Truth to wrap up the Ori storyline. Though it still sucks we never got that O'neill centric movie!

I found it quite underwhelming. What a sad and random ending for the Asgard. It didn't help that I'm not a fan of Bridge's character or Vala, and found Mitchell quite boring.

I think because SG-1 had done so many great big action-packaged stories in Season 7/8/9/10 up until then it was a change of pace. Personally, I think it was a good ending considering they didn't have the time to make full use of the story they had planned and not know if they had a movie at all to work with.

This was an absolutely awesome review and I honestly feel indebted to you for doing it. I have long felt that Stargate as a franchise and SG one in particular or the best American Science Fiction series ever. And I think that’s because it really tried harder than it had to. It could easily have costed by for a few seasons on recognition, Rodenberry Andromeda or other late 90s./early 2000s filler content. But instead, they really put their heart and soul into it. The show was internally consistent, and as you pointed out, it was about change. Status quo was never status quo very long. The franchise had an amazing and unprecedented knack for course correction when they inevitably did screw up from time to time.
And I am personally gratified by your high praise for the so-called “Fargate” seasons. I know a lot of people didn’t like them, I know a lot of people didn’t give them a chance, but I always felt it was a fantastic way to rejuvenate the series, And when it abruptly ended, I legitimately felt cheated that we were not going to get to spend more time getting to know, Cam, Landry, Lam, and all of the new directions the show would inevitably have gone in.
To be honest, I still feel cheated by that 17 years later.

Great job, as always! I have to admit, I didn't watch the series on Showtime. When I did get to watch S1, I thought it was okay, but it didn't jazz me enough to continue on. But, the years passed and it got spinoffs and such. Friends told me it was good, so when it got a blu-ray boxed set release, I bought it, watched it, and didn't regret it.
That said, it really is annoying how SciFi just killed the show. I felt it could go on for another few seasons at the very least.

And I replied "there was only one" he said "no not the feature film the two movies that were made after the last season" I still remember now almost running home to Google it! By then continuum and ark of truth for sale in WHSmith in my local town and I managed to buy them that day. I was extremely happy that day. 😊😊

Great retrospective as always. This comment is going to be a series of bullet point... mostly good.
Although there were many great episodes later on, my favourite season was 5. All of the main cast were great but I also felt the replacement, Nemec, Bridges, Browder, Black and so on, did amazing jobs. I warmed to Jonas Quinn quicker than Vala in the village square. You said it perfectly yourself, they weren't carbon copies or 'lite' versions of who they were replacing. I also can't commend Browder and Black for enough for not only escaping John and Aeryn, but resetting their great chemistry from Farscape. Judge's acting ability also can't get enough praise.
They also had so many great guests and recurring recurring guests. You emotionally invested in them. Tony Amendola and Carmen Argenziano were great individually but those few moments where they interacted were gold.
The King Arthur / Ori. I liked the Ori as antagonists, particularly their aesthetics. I found the Camelot arc was very overt including, as in one of your clips of the sword fight, some very overtly cheesy music rather than the well-balanced and effective scores. I also really liked the character of Tomin. The visuals of Vala hammering on this dough as he walks in through the door. Not hobbles, not limps, not scuffs...WALKS.
With 200, all the references were funny but I loved the 'younger, edgier cast.'
Sci-fi fans are really fond and accepting of guests who have been on other shows, Morena Baccarin was a joy on Firefly and it was great to see her here. I so also have to agree with you that Adria and Vala relationship was never given a chance to deepen.

I love it when Jonus and Jackson where on screen together. I had hoped they would find a way to keep them both, but well. He was supposed to have come back for more episodes, but outside of the one that didn't happen either. However, I remember seeing why the show was canceled. You see the problem wasn't Scifi channel, but NBC, the company that owned Scifi at the time. You see, NBC is a major broadcaster in the US, and at that time all of them were suffering due to people migrating to cable channels. However, they were able to cut cost and find success with two different types of shows: the single-camera show for which they had Modern Family and reality TV. At that time, SciFi had 3 expensive science fiction shows running concurrently: SG1, SGA, and Battlestar Galactica. SciFi was told that they had to cancel one of them to save cost, and replace it with an Earthbound show with lower cost. So, since SG1 was the oldest, and had been dodging cancellation for years, they chose SG1. Interesting fact, while BSG was SciFi's most successful mini-series, it never surpassed SG1 in the ratings for the TV show.
