    Some of these older CFL lit LCD TVs are real gems. I have a Panasonic 26" from 2005 or 2006 that unfortunately doesn't have ATSC built into it but still has one HDMI port, and it has really nice picture quality with better black levels than I've seen from some modern LCD TVs. It even has a light sensor to automatically adjust contrast. Some of those older TVs actually retailed for lots of money then, I think my Panasonic was $3000 or so for 26" when now a 24" LCD TV is $125 or so at Walmart. I recently came across a 19" Sharp Aquos from 2004 (!!!) but sadly didn't pick it up, even though it was only $10 (figured it didn't have ATSC either...) and its retail price then was $5000. One of the weirdest but coolest TVs I ever came across was a 32" Toshiba from 2006/2007 or so with ATSC, but with a TV Guide menu system both for OTA TV, but also cable. It had a Cablecard slot integrated into the TV so you could use its own TV Guide menu system with cable. It was really neat but totally useless now unfortunately, and it made a lot more menus to look around in for an ATSC channel scan, but it felt like you'd be a big baller in 2006 if you had that TV.
    So while newer TVs are cheaper and generally have more features, some of these old TVs have a lot better picture quality than you'd expect and they're priced at essentially nothing now. Some plasmas like the Pioneer Kuros are starting to get more expensive again, but almost nobody looks at the old LCDs when they can be quite worthwhile sometimes. You can only cheapen a product so much, and going from $3000 to $100, some stuff gets lost sometimes.

    • @NorthcoasterHobby
      @NorthcoasterHobby  2 года назад +1

      This is interesting information. I remember a friend of mine had a TV with a built in ‘TV guide’ brand channel guide. The picture quality of these older televisions seems much better in my eyes. I’ve had 2 new RCA TV’s fail, as well as the Toshibas. That’s why I will pick these TV’s up when I find them for such a good price. Thanks for your comments and for watching. 📡📡

      @@NorthcoasterHobby I find newer TVs are more simply built and somewhat easier to fix, but they seemingly do break much more often. The older Toshiba 32" TV even had a cooling fan. Very tough built, but more complex for sure. A sort of hobby of mine is fixing broken LCD TVs, as long as the screen isn't cracked (then you're screwed totally, but can resell boards on ebay) usually it's just buying the board for it on ebay and plugging it in, though backlight repairs are very difficult and require a lot of care. I have 2 55"s, one 50" and one 65" that I've repaired for under $100 after getting them for free. The 65" cost $0 to repair by simply reflowing the mainboard in a toaster oven.
      If you're capable of doing all this FTA satellite stuff, imo you're definitely capable of repairing these TVs. I still haven't gotten an FTA setup yet, waiting til after Christmas. Also my HOA almost certainly won't allow a big C-Band dish and my yard/house situation probably isn't the best for satellite (next to too many houses and trees) but I want to give it a try and see what happens. I've been watching some FTA channels (without knowing it) for years via IPTV so having an internetless backup would be cool. Anyway, all this satellite stuff imo is super complex, and it's been a whirlwind of hours of research just to get a basic handle on it. I think if you can do this you definitely can repair TVs this way.
      If you come across a Pioneer Elite or Kuro locally and have spare cash, pick it up. They have picture quality almost as good as the modern high dollar OLEDs at a much lower cost (but higher power consumption.)
