R 1 3 N C 2 4 At the front of the stick, we have the range selector paddle. This allows the gearbox to jump up into high range. Using the same gears, but on a different ratio. We then have a splitter toggle which enables us to split the gear we are in, effectively it is an overdrive for each gear. So, to make up the 18spd, we have the following. 1 - 1st gear (splitter back) 2 - 1st gear overdrive (splitter forward) 3 - 2nd gear (splitter back) 4 - 2nd gear overdrive (splitter forward) 5 - 3rd gear (splitter back) 6 - 3rd gear overdrive (splitter forward) 7 - 4th gear (splitter back) 8 - 4th gear overdrive (splitter forward) 9 - 1st gear high-range (5th gear) (splitter back) 10 - 1st gear high-range (5th gear) overdrive (splitter forward) 11 - 2nd gear high-range (6th gear) (splitter back) 12 - 2nd gear high-range (6th gear) overdrive (splitter forward) 13 - 3rd gear high-range (7th gear) (splitter back) 14 - 3rd gear high-range (7th gear) overdrive (splitter forward) 15 - 4th gear high-range (8th gear) (splitter back) 16 - 4th gear high-range (8th gear) overdrive (splitter forward) Then we also have Crawler and high-range Crawler which gives us the final two speeds to make up the "18spd". Crawler gears are rarely used; as such, we don't typically use them in the shift stack when explaining the 18spd. But, for those wanting to know where they would slot in, low-range Crawler would be the first place and high-range Crawler would be between 4th gear overdrive and 1st gear high-range. As for the reverse, we have 4 speeds for reverse. Reverse Reverse Overdrive Reverse high-range Reverse high-range overdrive But we don't include reverse gears when stating how many speeds the gearbox has. It is also important to note that based in the weights you are carrying, you do not need to go through the shift stack with all splits. For example, when I am driving the B-Double at 62t, I typically shift the following way (on level ground) 2nd gear 4th gear 4th gear overdrive 1st gear high-range 1st gear high-range overdrive 3rd gear high-range 3rd gear high-range overdrive 4th gear high-range 4th gear high-range overdrive It isn't the fastest way to get to 100kph, but it is less shifting and doesn't see the motor constantly running its rev range.

As you said, you have to be comfortable with your own company and have confidence in your ability to deal with the unexpected to be a long haul driver. The Aussie landscape to many people is boring and monotonous. For me I love it because I take time to notice the small details. The extraordinary colours at sunrise and sunset are a real treat. Hi johnno and Michael such a cool fun video of your trip and showing Michael the long haul side of trucking in australia so wishing yous safe miles and looking forward to part 2 cheers from tim in queensland australia ( keep on trucking )
G'Day Jonno. When you stopped for a shower @ 26 minute mark, there was a noisy banging noise at idle. Sounded like a big end bearing to me. I spent many years riding as a passenger (hitch-hiking in my 20's) and picked a lot, like flashing your lights after a truck has passed you in the same direction. Flashing also to indicate you are going to pass. Blinking left, right, left, to say thanks for the flash etc. I wonder if Mike noticed you doing any of that... I drive a Tesla (car) these days, and I can't wait to see Tesla semis on the roads here. It might take a while before you could do a drive like yours though ! Regards, Greg.

Hey Johnno, what a great part 1. A snow Mexican down under 😳, Michael seems to be a very enthusiastic guy 👍. I've always found explaining gear changes to be harder than actually changing gear......Looking forward to pt 2. 🇬🇧
I'd really like to know the names of the roadhouses that featured in your video. I crossed the Nullarbor in 2013 and cannot recall any roadhouses having those facilities. They must've been seriously upgraded in the last eleven years.
@RoadTrainAdventures Thank you for that; my campervan trip also took in Ceduna and Port Augusta but I must've missed those roadhouses unless they're new/revamped since 2013. I've driven the sealed A1 highway around entire Australia and the Stuart highway Darwin to Adelaide and, as I'm a retired UK truck driver, called in at every roadhouse to check out and take photos of the road trains.
I think the American truckers that see this will know exactly what you meant when you explained the gears. Never saw this colab happening. Oi, where's my mini sprint car frame that I ordered that was on the back lol.

At the front of the stick, we have the range selector paddle.
This allows the gearbox to jump up into high range. Using the same gears, but on a different ratio.
We then have a splitter toggle which enables us to split the gear we are in, effectively it is an overdrive for each gear.
So, to make up the 18spd, we have the following.

5 - 3rd gear (splitter back)
6 - 3rd gear overdrive (splitter forward)
7 - 4th gear (splitter back)
8 - 4th gear overdrive (splitter forward)
9 - 1st gear high-range (5th gear) (splitter back)
10 - 1st gear high-range (5th gear) overdrive (splitter forward)
11 - 2nd gear high-range (6th gear) (splitter back)
12 - 2nd gear high-range (6th gear) overdrive (splitter forward)
13 - 3rd gear high-range (7th gear) (splitter back)
14 - 3rd gear high-range (7th gear) overdrive (splitter forward)
15 - 4th gear high-range (8th gear) (splitter back)

Then we also have Crawler and high-range Crawler which gives us the final two speeds to make up the "18spd".

But we don't include reverse gears when stating how many speeds the gearbox has.
It is also important to note that based in the weights you are carrying, you do not need to go through the shift stack with all splits.

Did the Nullarbor earlier this year. Where is the Oyster Barn? Asking for a friend…😂
It's in Ceduna opposite the BP.
@@RoadTrainAdventures thanks…
Anytime
So noice. Looking forward to Part Two. 🙏
Thanks heaps. It may be a few weeks.
New subscriber looking forward to the journey feller…
Awesome. Well it's great to have you along.
Great video! it reminds me of the time in 2021 when i drove a trucky to the mines in mackay with a 1976 kenworth k100.
Oh very good. K100 isn't the kind of trick if line to stay in too long. No room to move or live.
@@RoadTrainAdventures
you're right, mate
it was tough in the KW, but I really enjoyed the drive from Newcastle to Mackay😀
keep up the good video work 👍👊
Thanks heaps. Part 2 will be out soon.
Do you go through Jamestown or Belalie East to get to Caltowie?
Jamestown
Looking forward to Part 2
Part 2 may be a few weeks away.

Very nice. Thanks Tim. Part 2 might take a few weeks before it comes out.
Hi from Yorkshire, uk. How long do you stay out for at each time.? Thanks.
Thanks Wesley. I'm usually out between 2 to six weeks at a time.
@@RoadTrainAdventures proper trucking. Gl m8
I love being in the truck and on the open road.
Bit of a difference having company johnno. Looks like a fantastic trip so far, can't wait for the nullabor part, i think he will be very surprised.
Yes it was great having someone do camera. The next part should be great too. I haven't even started editing that part.
@@RoadTrainAdventures That’s ok when it comes up it comes up woo hoo. Where are you heading now, did you go home?
I did get home for the weekend. I'm in Adelaide now with a single trailer. I've delivered now picking up an item for Melbourne airport
@@RoadTrainAdventures stupid question why didn’t they just put it on a plane in Adelaide
I don't know. Maybe the cargo plane doesn't go to Adelaide
Love the vid Johnno i see you've come to my town for wok in the box lol two comedic duos havin fun makes the trip enjoyable
Yes while we made a little fun about how clean the showers are.
Great video well done decently bring back memories I had 18 speed road ranger overdrive
That's the best gearbox
Thanks Greg. No that knocking sounds is the sound the compressor makes in a Cummins.
Don't know who your passenger is (not seen his channel before) but that was a good video, looking forward to part2 whenever you get it edited!
Thanks Kyle. That may be a few weeks depending on time.
Sorry to watch your vid a bit late. And i m not in membership at the moment. Ill be back next week i gues. This was a very nice vid with the freindly guy. Totaly diferent and good to see this guy interview you. Cant wait for part 2. Keep i m betwen the mostard and apple juse and the shining side up. Ore somthing like that. Stay safe Johnno. By the way... Its abouth the same gear shifting as i drove from back in the days. But not shifting withouth the clutch. I think i told you before.
Yes that's all good. This was fun to make
Loved it !
Very nice. It's great to have you along
Can't wait for part 2
It should be out for Saturday
@@RoadTrainAdventures can't wait
Not too long to wait. I'm putting the final touches to it now. Looks better than part 1
@@RoadTrainAdventures awesome
G'day Road Train Adventures i like ❤👍 you Truck 🚚 Videos from Australia and good Kenworth T909 Truck 🚚👍 and good Journey across in Australia
Awesome. It's great to have you along.
Hey Johnno, what a great part 1. A snow Mexican down under 😳, Michael seems to be a very enthusiastic guy 👍. I've always found explaining gear changes to be harder than actually changing gear......Looking forward to pt 2. 🇬🇧
Awesome. Thanks Bob. Part 2 is out now
Brilliant.
Awesome. Thanks for coming along.
The Big Galah eh, I was over there a couple weeks ago.
Oh no and I missed you
Really enjoyed part 1 Johnno. Micheal seems like a really nice guy. Looking forward to part 2. Stay safe out there. Cheers👍
Awesome. It may take a few weeks until I can get the next part out.
Gday mate love the content keep it coming, keep up what you do 👍
Awesome. Thanks for coming along.
I'd really like to know the names of the roadhouses that featured in your video. I crossed the Nullarbor in 2013 and cannot recall any roadhouses having those facilities. They must've been seriously upgraded in the last eleven years.
The roadhouses in this video weren't on the Nullarbor. They were Port Augusta OTR and Ceduna.
@RoadTrainAdventures
Thank you for that; my campervan trip also took in Ceduna and Port Augusta but I must've missed those roadhouses unless they're new/revamped since 2013. I've driven the sealed A1 highway around entire Australia and the Stuart highway Darwin to Adelaide and, as I'm a retired UK truck driver, called in at every roadhouse to check out and take photos of the road trains.
Part 2 of this video has the roadhouses on the Nullarbor.
@RoadTrainAdventures Thank you; will watch that, it'll bring back great memories
Very good
what makes it even cooler is non of that DEF crap
You got it. No problems there.
Great video 👍
Very nice. Thanks Christopher
Awesome video
Thanks Jonathan
great video mate keep up the good work
Awesome. Thanks Jason
Haha. Downie live. Love his videos
Thanks Ian. Wow so many of you folks Downie too. Very good
I think the American truckers that see this will know exactly what you meant when you explained the gears. Never saw this colab happening. Oi, where's my mini sprint car frame that I ordered that was on the back lol.
Ha ha. A good surprise then. Can I keep them coming?
great driver.i wasnt aware Robbie Williams twin brother drives trucks.
Ha ha. Wonders never cease.
@@RoadTrainAdventures haha def a resemblance there
For sure
No worries take care did you get a new truck I see on a post that they got two new ones I think that's what it said
They offered me a newer truck but it's not the new truck.
Okay are you going to take it is it a 909
@malcjeffhavelbe2888 Yes
Nice
Thanks Geoff
