    Oddly enough Anjelica Houston received an unfair amount of backlash when she was cast as Morticia. 90s audiences said her facial features were too broad and masculine to play her. She was frequently compared to Carolyn Jones who played Morticia in the 60s Addams Family sitcom, and had softer doll-like features. Now Anjelica Houston's iconic portrayal is the STANDARD for the character of Morticia!

    • @3vart_
      @3vart_  2 месяца назад +4

      Wow, that is interesting. I never knew that she got backlash at first. I definitely would say that Anjelica's Morticia looks more like the original comic than Carolyn's, but I assume the people who gave her backlash for it only knew Carolyn as Morticia and not the original comic.

    The love and lust was what I found attractive about the Addams couple. The old ones not the new one. Gomez was never attractive to me. His love for her was what was attractive.

      so true, ride or die wife guy. There's something counter-cultural about the way Gomez and Morticia love and respect each other

    Just wanted to add that I've long thought Luis Guzman was an undervalued and underappreciated actor, so I was very glad to see him cast in the Wednesday series!

    Gomez is meant to be an awesome person but not attractive...Morticia is a stunner in every iteration, I guess to make us wonder what he did to make her love him as passionately as he loves her.

      That was always my take -- that Gomez was at best average-looking but that the two of them connected on a deep level.

    I think nostalgia also plays a role .i don’t think most people know about the comics and grew up with the sixties and nineties versions .I know in my case I only knew them from the tv show growing as a kid and the movies as a teenager. I didn’t even know they were based on a comic . So to see him be ugly seemingly out of nowhere is jarring for them and they probably think the tv show is what he’s supposed to look like Originally .In my case when I first saw the current version I thought they got him wrong until I found out about the comics.

    • @3vart_
      @3vart_  2 месяца назад

      Yeah, I can understand people being surprised about that because not a lot of people know about the comics.

  • @bloodangelsheart
    @bloodangelsheart 2 месяца назад +14

    I understand that original gomez was meant to be ugly, but the ugly husband/beautiful wife is such an over done trope. Not only that, Mortica wasn't conventionally beautiful in the comics either, she's boney, spiderlike with thin hair slicked to her skull. The whole point is she looks like a corpse. But non of the live actions portray this and I don't hear an out cry. The Adam's family is supposed to be different but by having standards to keep gomez the same as his comic part and not Mortica makes it the same as any other family comedy.

    • @3vart_
      @3vart_  2 месяца назад +3

      Yes, that is true that Morticia wasn't conveniently attractive either, but in most of the adaptations, they do still make her accurate for the most part. She's usually is still tall, pale, and skinny. I made the video specifically about Gomez because it's more obvious that they changed his character design.

    • @0deadx21
      @0deadx21 23 дня назад

      The only comic accurate Morticias are the animated ones, because right from the get-go she isn't very realistic for a human. Stick figure-like, skeletal, tall and thin neck, hair that looks adherent to the skin. It's no wonder the live-action versions all look like Elvira clones.

    The fact that people can't grasp that Gomez is not atractive to most shows how some people can't see a woman like Morticia and a man like Gomez together.
    They're in love because how dark their likes and compatible their personalities are, not because of merely physical appearances.

    Great take on Gomez! The great thing about the Addams Family is that they evolve with the times, and every actor brings their own interpretation to the role. As you say, John Astin and Raul Julia were perfect for their versions, but that shouldn't keep other actors from adding to the legend. I think part of Guzman's burden was that he was cast opposite Catherine Zeta-Jones, who is definitely a conventional beauty. Guzman plays Gomez with a lot of warmth-you never doubt that he loves his kids, though he does embarrass the hell out of him. But yeah, that wig...
    Keep making videos! The word is out on Eva.

    • @3vart_
      @3vart_  Месяц назад

      Thank you so much! I agree Luis Guzman definitely can add to the legend of Gomez. I did enjoy the parts that he and Katherine Zeta-Jones were in. I hope they will be in more of the next season of Wednesday so they can have more chances to explore their characters.

    I didn't mind that Guzman was cast as Gomez in "Wednesday." When I first watched the show, I was actually happy that the show runners were sticking to referencing the original comic strips.

    In the Wednesday adaptation, did they give Gomez enough to work with? I haven't seen that one, but I would be willing to accept him if they gave him the personality he deserved. But based on Jenna Ortega's recount, they didn't give her much to work with soo... maybe they were looking at the aesthetic and went from there?

    • @3vart_
      @3vart_  2 месяца назад

      That's true. I can agree that his personality could've been shown more in the series because he was only in it for two episodes. I understand if people don't like him because of that. That's probably because of bad writing on Wednesday's part.

    Fantastic analysis, though you skipped over one of my favorite Addams Family appearances -- their one-off guest episode on _Scooby Doo_ (which was also my first introduction to them). I only started watching reruns of the B&W live-action series *because* I had been introduced to them via that animated series. And I never knew that there was a series of print cartoons that the TV series had been based on before this video! Thanks, and keep up the great work!

    I've always thought that the most successful Gomezes have been very not ugly, but they've always seem to have something unconventional, kind of goofy. I love that Raul and Christopher Lloyd have the same eyes.

    Gomez can look however, the way he lives his life is what makes him attractive. This was the point in the original and still worked even when they yassified him, and works again in Wednesday. I just want the show to focus more on him.

      @@3vart_ I grew up on the tv series, and had a fondness for Gomez. Astin has a definite eccentricity which plays well into Gomez. It is that eccentric aspect that he's probably most famous for, and he used that when he was cast in a recurring role in the wacky, wild and wonderful tv series "Night Court", where he played a man who had spent time in a mental institution. He had a catch phrase in this role, and it's the last line of this clip: ruclips.net/video/M8KdtJOCzOU/видео.html
