Legendary Mehdi Hassan sahab. I had the honor of attending his live concert in Chicago during his 1982 visit. After the concert my uncle and I were able to meet him back stage for five minutes. I will never forget that once-in-a-lifetime moment. May you always rest in eternal peace Hassan sahab.
As a child, I would meet him every evening at Asr prayers. His son had a car repair shop at our apartment complex. Never realized how big an artist I had met so many times. He would shake hands with us and caress our cheeks with such elderly love.
I can very well recollect the moment, at 3:15 am IST on 4th May 1998. I was studying for my Engineering third year when from a long distance, my attention could not escape from listening to a heavenly voice. Gazal was "Chirag-e-Tur jalao bada andhera hai". I was mesmerized. I was not then knowing the magician. I dropped my exam to find the treasure. The only thread I was having to reach the treasure were these words - "Chirag-e-Tur jalao". I was then staying in a relatively smaller town in India. I kept on searching for this gazal & after 6-7 months of search, I found this gazal. I found myself in tears. God promise, since then I lost interest in Lata, Rafi, Kishor, Ghulam Ali, Jagjit singh & all the rest of the singers. I found God. Come what may! But, I can't ever commit suicide simply because I would not be able to listen to Mehdi Hassan saheb. Indebted forever to the great legend for bringing ecstasy to my life with his timeless melodies. What more can I say? Love & salute from India!

But I slowly began to realize that how far we are from listening to real music, divine music. India is still besotted by filmy playback music..I wont name but lot of the ghazal singers in India and also qawwali music in India just dont have it..The level of ecstasy, taiyyari and musical acumen needed is simply not there..Indian classical is fine but when I listen to Roshan Ara Begum, Salamat Ali Khaa Saahab, Bade Fateh Ali Khaa Saahab, Shoukat Hussain Khaa Saahab I feel enamored and wondering. Even Zakir Bhai and Vishwa Mohan Bhatt have confessed it in public..It is on record...Thank You again. From Mumbai, India
So well written!! I grew up listening to ghulam ali, sabri brothers, jagjit singh... had only heard ranjish hi sahi from mwhdi hassan. Was a big ghulam ali fan. Once i heard him say "main toh khan saab ke charanon ki dhool hoon" i thought he was being too modest , till i heard other gems by Mehdi saab. My god , like you rightly said its pure ecstacy!! I always get goosebumps listening to him

Sir Mehdi Hassan and his Family use to live in our neighbourhood (FB Area, Karachi) - their house was just infront of us.. I was a kid going to school those days so never understood who was he until I grew up but by then he was no more and I was no longer in Pakistan.. I so wish to roll back years and go back to 80s so I can pay tribute to this legend!

Not probably greatest ever ghazal singer, he was the greatest. There is no other singer who gave an iconic identity to ghazal singing than Mehdi Hasan Sb. The art of ghazal singing died alongwith his death.
